I am going to have to live with that thread title, but whatever!

I have decided the correct term for me, besides original comic art collector, is comic reader. I don't collect comics so much as store the ones I read. I bought some Moebius comics the other day off ebay and when I opened the package I realized these were now the nicest comics in my collection, almost without a doubt. So collecting high grade comics was never my thing. Yes, I grabbed some comics second hand along the way, including a Strange Tales 169 and Daredevil 9 and 10 but not much else unless I bought it to read off the rack. But along the way about 25 years ago I started collecting original art due to a chance encounter with Paul Ryan or Sam de la Rosa at a convention. [i recall thinking "artists draw at cons?" with Paul Ryan and "they sell the art used to make comic pages?" with Samuel de la Rosa (who was one of a few Latino inkers credited as "Manuel Labor" on the issue and who told me that he did not like that one bit) but am not sure which happened first.]

Comic art led me to these boards a few years ago. I had resisted the siren call until recently. But Doc McCoy (I think it was) came over to the OA parts of the boards advertising (his?) free David Petersen art in some thread called Pay it Forward. As I was in the process of trading art regularly with a local dealer, I promptly went and claimed said art. Sadly I traded it away almost immediately to the dealer. I apologize; I was single-minded and unthinking at the time but understand my mistake now. So please forgive me.

But PIF sucked me in right from the start. Especially when I jumped on another piece of OA quickly (still have that one, don't worry). Then a strange thing occurred. I watched as some really cool slabs were given away to fellow boardies. When a nice X-Men slab came up I decided to take the plunge and claim it. (Thanks Griff!) I was quickly offered another slab gratis from a boardie (looking forward to getting that one! :applause:). Now this weekend I took the plunge and decided to have some fun and get a few for myself. I figured it really doesn't matter so much if they are comics I have read and admired so much as fun things to look at on the shelf. So I put out the call for cheap slabs and that thread inspired me to start this one and chronicle the rise through the ranks of my first rate collection. NOT! I am not trying to start a new collection, but have some cool comics displayed that will make me smile.

    So without further eloquence...

  3. So this year....

This year I want to concentrate on completing my Iron Fist set, the originals from the 70s, and my X-Men 144-300 set. The X-Men set is a lot of books, but the Iron Fist is only missing 9 books and I have two "scheduled for grading." So, I think these are attainable goals for the year. Wish me luck.... Happy collecting to all in 2015!

Entering Step Two of my CGC Addiction.

Well, I have decided to begin cleaning up my entire CGC Registry.

This is eventually going to lead to notes, scans, re-namings, etc.

Just anything that sheds a brighter light on my CGC Registry Collection.

I also believe this day will mark a slight transition from Modern/Copper to a more Modern/Copper/Bronze Slabbed Collection.

There are just way too many Bronze Batman, Spidey, and X-Men to 'ignore' much longer.

Also helping my cause is that my Modern and Copper slabs run like a well oiled machine nowadays with my familiar auctions and dealers helping me out every step of the way.

Next stop? A nice scanner! And away we gooooooooooo!!!

  4. Darn you Bagofleas, now I feel compelled to write one.

This is a difficult list as the last two years seem to blur together. In January of 2013 I got back into comics after a 10 year hiatus. I have never felt as youthful.

I've made some great friends at the cons along the way and that would have been my #1 item of a 2013 list.

10 - Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 CGC SS 9.8 (George Perez). The death of Supergirl cover is a classic. Honorable mention to CGC SS #8 which saw the heroic death of Barry Allen.

9 - Fifteen different Superman and Man of Steel issues in CGC SS 9.8 signed by Dan Jurgens and Louise Simonson respectively. Others broke the rules with multiples in a single listing so I will continue with the anarchy :) I also have a number of Jerry Ordway signed issues at CGC now.

8 - Fifteen different X-Factors issues from #1-39 in CGC SS 9.8 signed by Walt and Louise Simonson.

7 - Sandman Overture #1 blank cover with interconnected Sandman and Death sketches by Serena Guerra (Mouse Guard colorist) at NYCC 2014.

6 - Batman: Dark Knight of the Round Table #1 and 2 CGC SS 9.8 (Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez). I own an original art page from #2 where Bruce in armor lays the sword Excalibur on Arthur's chest at his funeral.

5 - Dreamwalker #0 CGC SS 9.8 (Eric Powell - 1st Goon appearance). I submitted this at Baltimore Comic Con 2014. I originally purchase this directly from the Dreamwalker creator, Jenni Gregory, when she had a table next to mine at a con back in 1999.

4 - Justice League of America #11 blank cover CGC SS 9.8 with a Black Canary pouting sketch by Kevin Maguire. I've been a big fan of his since his work on Justice League in 1987. The JL #1 from 1987 CGC SS 9.8 (Maguire, Giffen, DeMatteis) would have been my #2 in 2013 (see opening paragraph for #1).

3 - Invaders #1 blank covers CGC SS 9.8 (x3) with interconnected sketches of Human Torch, Captain America and Submariner by George Perez. Poor George... He doesn't know what I have planned for him in 2015.

2 - An original comic art watercolor by David Wenzel from the Hobbit #1 published by Eclipse in 1989. I purchased this directly from David at NYCC 2014. I was shocked that there was still a page available.

1.5 - Strangers in Paradise v2 #1 variant cover - Terry Moore was at NYCC 2014 this year so I got his signature on this cover. I had not anticipated that Jim Lee would be at the show and that Mike J, a CGC witness, would be facilitating his signature. What makes this double signature so significant is that I own the original cover art to this issue. What makes it a half grade is that the comic is at CGC going through the grading process so... BONUS... I get to list it next year too when I actually get it back.

1 - An original Joe Giella Batman and Riddler painting. Joe generously donated this made for charity piece to support a Long Island, NY children's charity for Grasshopper's Comics annual charity raffle (www.JTCF.org). It is like Make-a-Wish for Long Island kids. I was absolutely stunned when my name was called for the first pick. Next year I pledge to pay it forward with a larger donation and to contribute some CGC books to the raffle to support this worthy cause.

All artwork and sketch covers mentioned above are featured in my Comic Art Fan gallery (linked below). Stop by and leave a comment if you wish.

    Have a Happy New Year!

    James

You too can start a comic business!

Basic Journal to note my experiences buying and selling comics. Your mileage may vary if you replicate or emulate any of my experiences. But the enjoyment I've gotten out of this hobby and how I've approached it is something I thought I'd share.

First, a little background. I collected back issues in the mid 1980s mostly in the Boston area spending my paper route money on 1960s Spidermans and 1970s Xmen. I won't bore you with those details but formative years are formative years. Kept my books through college and an 8 year stint in the Army and then went to grad school. I now work in finance making a comfortable living supporting a wife and 4 young girls.

While in business school I wanted to apply what I was learning to buying and selling comics. I did do this with comics and baseball cards in the 1980s by renting a flea market table and setting up my wares. Fun stuff but I remember it being more work than profit. So basically I put the word out that I was buying collections and received a couple of calls. Indeed, bought a couple of nice collections - mostly 1970s. Date was around 2001 to give you an idea of where the market was. CGC was still new but basically established. Ebay was all guns blazing and I had a year or two of ebay experience buying and selling.

  6. The death of Destiny and the birth of my collection.

    Salutations to everyone,

For your viewing pleasure, pictured below is Uncanny X-Men # 255 graded at 9.8. In this issue, Destiny dies at the hands of the Reavers. This is the comic book that started my addiction.

My mother had taken my brother and I to Walgreens to fill a prescription. As we waited for the pharmacist, our mother indulged us each with a comic book from a spinner rack. I had picked out X-Factor 48 with the Jean Grey cover and my brother picked this Uncanny X-Men. I thought the covers were amazing and compelling. As soon as my brother put down his comic, I picked it up and read it, read it again, and then read it some more. The spark hit me. I was hooked.

The story was amazing. There were so many X-Men that I did not recognize and all with different powers, most wearing the iconic X-Men colors. The X-Men in this comic book were on Muir Island. It seemed exotic to have the X-Men in Europe and under siege. Chris Claremont's writing was fantastic and the story was so rich with various threads. My only previous exposure to the X-Men was with the Saturday morning cartoon, Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, in the mid 80's. So we had picked up this comic book probably 5 years later and it proved to be more than what I had dreamt.

This is one of my all-time favorite comic books. It does not hold much value but to me it's priceless with all the wonder and magic that it gave me and the memory it has given me of my mother. She is alive but it is nice to appreciate our loved ones today.

It has been about a year since I last posted. I am glad to be posting again on these chat boards.

    G. I. Joe #21 Foil Renegar Edition

This is actually one of my favorite books. I picked up 2 copies of this book back in 03 while I was on a temporary assignment to Biloxi, Mississippi. Shortly after I took a long break from collecting.

Around 2013 I got back into the hobby and decided to send one of my raws in to get slabbed. Now this was before I had heard of pressing so I was happy enough when it came back 9.6. After stumbling onto a couple threads about how much a press can do for a book I dug this back out and decided it was worth giving it a shot and sent it in to CCS all by its lonesome for a squish and slab. To my amazement the presswork got a grade bump to 9.8!!!

This is probably THE book that changed the way I look at raws when I pick them up. Before G.I. Joe #21 I looked at what condition a raw book was in before I bought it. Now I look at what a raw book CAN be.

Pleased with the speed of the turn-around of my comics submitted at the NY Comic Con this year.

    NYCC Turn-around

This year I decided to get a bunch of books graded. I dropped them off at the NY Comic Con last month.

I started with my Aircel Men In Black Vol 2 mini-series. As I mentioned in my reply and mea culpa to the Journal "The Clutter", I had been too lazy to pack up these books to get re-holdered and fix their registration numbers. And then things got out of control. Here is a list of what I submitted and their turn-around times. I created the invoices at home and brought them to the NYCC the next day or so.

    10/16/14 3 comics

Men In Black Vol 2 reholdered

Status: Shipped/Safe and in my hands

    10/16/14 5 comics

    2 Quality Spirits (16, 21)

    1 Air Pirate Funnies 2

2 Kitchen Sink Spirits (1 second printing, 2)

Status: Shipped/Safe and in my hands

    10/21/14 5 comics

    Logan's Run 6

    Miracleman 23

    New Mutants 87 (2nd printing)

    Strange Tales 181

Status: Shipped/Safe and in my hands

    10/22/14 4 comics

    3 Quality Spirits (14, 15, 19)

    1 Harvey Spirit 2

Status: Shipped/Safe and in my hands

    10/22/14 4 magazines

3 Marvel Super Specials (Beatles, 2 different Kiss)

    1 Marvel Preview

    Status: Shipped/Safe and in transit

    10/22/14 7 comics

    3 Captain Marvel (15, 16, 32)

    1 Chamber of Darkness 4

    1 Strange Tales 110

    1 Tomahawk 124

    1 Wonder Woman 199

    Status: Graded

So, I'm very impressed with the quick turn-around. The dates listed are invoice dates (when I started creating the invoices) and not the dates I handed them over to the nice folks at the CGC NYCC table. Nothing fancy (no pressing, no signatures). Mostly from my original collection (i.e. newsstand copies), except for the Spirits and the Captain Marvel 32 from the last invoice.

Everything back except one invoice in transit and one invoice that is Graded.

These invoices reflect some of my main interests. I primarily collect Silver Age and later books. But my favorite book is the Quality Comics reprints of Will Eisner's Spirit Sections. For the post Silver Age I primarily CGC by favorite creators - Alan Moore, Neal Adams, Jim Steranko, Bernie Wrightson and Jim Starlin.

  7. Missing in Action

During my move someone walked off with a short box of CGC Green Lantern comics. My numbers one through 100... You can see the comics they stole on my registry page. This was the pride and joy of my collection and I am hoping that all of you would be willing to keep an eye out for these comics.

I know that this is an impossible feat, but if anyone comes across any of these comics please let me know.

  8. ASM - volume 2

This will be my last entry for this series of journals.

To start this off, I should explain that from late 1991 to late 2001 I did not collect comics of any kind.

The terrible quality (and quantity) of what Marvel was pumping out in the early 90s destroyed my desire to read anything they made. The comics I had were in storage and forgotten, never to be looked at again.

Needless to say, I was in a very bad place in regards to comics and comic collecting, and as far as I was concerned, I would never buy or read another comic again...

    SET DESCRIPTION:

This set is very important to me, and here's why:

I had been collecting Spider-Man comics for about 9 and a half years when I decided to call it quits in late 1991. I had been collecting every Spider-Man title up to early 1991, and by mid-1991, Web and Spectacular were going straight into a comic box without being read (they were sooooo bad), and ASM was getting worse and worse with every issue that came out.

So, I finally decided to call it quits, and I swore that I would never buy or read another Spider-Man comic ever again.

    Until...

...One day, about 10 years later, a friend of mine at work shoved a comic in my face and said that I had to read it. He knew that I had been an avid Spider-Man fan but that I had soured on the whole experience and stopped collecting.

I looked at the book he put on my desk and I saw that the title said Amazing Spider-Man, but the cover was all black and the issue was #36.

I asked him what the hell this was and he just looked at me and calmly said, "Just read it." So, I turned the cover and began reading one of the greatest and most emotional stories that I have ever read in a comic book.

When I was done reading, I had to sit there for a few minutes to collect myself before I could walk over to my friend's desk to return his book.

"Pretty good, eh?" he said, nodding at me. I nodded back. He then went on to say how ASM has really improved, especially with this JMS guy as the new writer. I nodded again.

Another bonus was that JRJR had returned to the comic, so right after work that day I went to my local comic shop and purchased the previous 10 issues or so of Amazing Spider-Man. And that night I read them all.

Spider-Man was great again! Reading those issues reminded me of why I started collecting in the first place. The writing was strong, the artwork was fantastic, and JMS's treatment of Peter was perfect!

    I was back!

So, it was really the JRJR/JMS issues from this set that made me fall back in love with Amazing Spider-Man, and the reason why I haven't looked back since. (regardless of things like "One More Day", or Dock Ock as Spider-Man, or whatever else).

And I finally have this entire set in a 9.8 or higher. A lot of these issues were impossible to find for sale in a 9.8, so I ended up sending in quite a few to be graded by CGC. Luckily for me that I took care of my comics because most of them came back as 9.8s (after a nice little quick press by CCS, of course).

Here is my top 5 comics/story arcs from this set:

    5)

    #43 -- Damn! I love this cover!!!

    4)

#39 -- The 'NUFF SAID issue -- A comic with absolutely no dialogue -- They did a great job pulling it off and it was fun comic to experience

    3)

#30 -- 1st JMS story in ASM -- From this point on until JRJR left, this title was unbelievably good!

    2)

#38 -- The May confronts Peter about his being Spider-Man was perfectly done -- Not in a typical, "Oh My God! You're Spider-Man!" way, but a, "We are family, and I support you and love you." way -- Perfect!

    1)

    #36

  10. Of the comics that were on sale this month 50 years ago, What would you (or did you) buy?

The link below lists the various comics that were on sale in October 1964 (50 years ago). I thought it would be fun to look at the list and decide what 5 comics we would pick up at the newsstand, if we could go back 50 years. For some of us (like me), I was not born yet - but some of us here can probably tell us what they actually bought!

    http://www.dcindexes.com/features/timemachine.php?site=all&type=calendar&month=10&year=1964&sort=alpha

    My choices would be:

    1) Spider-Man #20

    2) Strange Tales $128 (cause of the Scarlet Witch)

    3) Sgt Fury #13 (great cover)

    4) Avengers #11

    5) Archie Christmas Stocking Magazine #31 (Assuming I would be a kid, I liked Archie and anything to do with Christmas!)

Chasing after a favorite characters first appearance.

For a year now, I've been trying to get a Hulk 181. I've seen many in poor condition I.E missing MVS, sell for ridiculous prices on the internet and at conventions. On my birthday, I won one that I over paid a bit. The look of the comic screams it needs pressing services. I am now saving money to do so in hopes when it gets graded, it turns out a higher grade than what was advertised. Wolverine is one of my favorite characters. And this comic is now special to me. I have a list of X-men first appearances that I'm searching for and planning to buy. Like Giant sized X-Men #1, X-Men #4 and X-Men #1 are the last big expensive comics left for me to collect.

    Overall, a bit disappointed.

I hesitated to start with submitting a book for grading due to the fact that it looks to be expensive. So, I began reading everywhere on both collectors-society and CGC grading sites. When you never had experience doing things like this it is quite complicated to figure out how to proceed and how much it is going to cost.

On the CGC comics site there is a form on the "Contact" page you can fill. Don't bother, they won't answer.

So far I tried the forum (http://boards.collectors-society.com/), sending e-mails and calling.

I never got any answer from anyone at CGC or collectors society by electronic way. The only thing that works is to call their toll free number. When you call them you get someone to help you pretty fast.

If you are not going to provide support any other ways than by phone, you should remove the support form from the web site.

I finally decided to to try it. So, I filled the submission form.

I did that after paying for the 1 year "Associate" subscription ($40) which grant you access to submit books for grading.

    And shipped my book.

I paid the 15 days turnaround (10 days estimate) fee for modern books ($28).

Shipped it on 2014/09/10 and they received it the next day 2014/09/11 and they shipped it back on the 2014/10/07

    That is 18 business days.

I read that it is a problem they've had since a while. It takes much longer than what they estimate on the site.

Why not updating the turnarounds and make it more accurate for us?

Also I paid for the "Imaging fee" ($5). So, when they finished grading and the book is sealed they scan it and send you the picture by e-mail. I had to call them to send me the scan (after I received the physical book) because they were not sending it.

If you expect grading notes it is not likely you will have some. They rarely add grader notes. And if they do, it is only very few words on one or maybe 2 lines. It is really not worth the $5 extra fee.

I think that if we could have more precise information about the steps or the checklist of the process of grading, it would really help us having a better understanding of the what influences the final score. And it would add credibility to CGC. They don't really need more credibility for now. But, for me, the credibility keeps dropping.

    Comic Journey the CGC Way.

Wow, I'm so excited about getting my books graded for the first time. This process is a tad bit long, however I will used a different tier, vs the cheaper tier for modern comics.

The four are, 1.Saga #1 First Ptg with COA, Strain #1 Variant & Regular cover First Ptg, and Guardians of the Galaxy #1 2008 First Ptg.

49 days and counting for info regarding slabs, Official received date was Aug-04-2014.

I have many more books to submit, so for the next couple of month, I will focus on submitting.

The purpose is to make more money.

15 business days and CGC is still at step 1 - Verified.

CGC received my books on August 20th and as of this morning all that has been done is they have verified the title and issue number of four books. How much longer before they get to step 2 of the process - Sent to Grading?

I have several more books to be graded but I'm thinking that I may need to try another company.

    Don't you just hate it when . . .

You submit a sequentially numbered set of books to be graded, whether they're a run from a series or all from a self-contained miniseries, and they all come back with the same grade . . . except 1?!And that one just happens to be in the middle of the set, sending your OCD into Overdrive?!

This happened to me recently when I submitted the 5 Variant Cover books of the Marvel Miniseries 5 Ronin.

I did my best examination to make sure they were 9.8 worthy, packed them up and sent them off.

After a few months, when I see that the grades are available, I get that mixed feeling of excitement and dread.

I wanna see the grades, but I don't wanna see the grades, ya know?

I click the link and scroll down the list till I see the titles.

    #1 - 9.8 woohoo!

    #2 - 9.8 yeah!

    #3 - 9.6 hunh?

    #4 - 9.8 yay, but ?? on #3

    #5 - 9.8 great, but wtf on #3?

I look at the grades again, just to be sure.

    There's numbers 1, 2, 4, and 5 all with 9.8.

    And that #3 with a 9.6.

    Yep, I wasn't imagining things, that's a 9.6.

Right. In. The. Middle. Of. The. Set.

    sonofa. . .

I know it's dumb, but I think I'd have been happier if it was the first, or the last, or if they had all come back 9.6.

It's just something about it being the oddball right in the middle. . . arrrghh . . . like an itch I can't scratch!

So now to CPR or hunt down a new copy?

    Decisions, decisions . . .

  16. I came with a list, and found key issues I had been looking for

I was able to attend my second con, this past sunday in Tampa and came away realizing that as long as I am organized, I can purchase may key issues in a short time of time at decent prices.

Although, I do like perusing the boards, scouring ebay, and visiting my LCSs, I definitely plan on holding on bigger purchases for key issues when the next scheduled con would be, for me that would be Nov 16th.

I was able to grab the following this past saturday:

    New mutants 98

    Detective Comics #1 (New 52)

    X factor 24

    Spawn 1

    Venom 1

    All Star Comics 58

    Amazing Spiderman 316

    Amazing Spiderman 365

Since collecting in May of this year (2014), I have spent over 700 on comics. I even have a full half box already. As a novice in collecting comics, I have learned quickly to be smarter with what I intend on buying. I should buy what I want, not what I think I want.

I also find myself organizing my comics in a myriad of ways, because it's cathartic and fun. I will do that again tonight!
