  1. So two months ago I wrote part 1 of this entry. Now it's time to tell you what I did there.

So quite literally in two weeks before comic con I got tickets, bought plane tickets, and found a place to stay. It was a hard task but the way I looked at it if everything fell into place - I was destined to go and do what I had only dreamed of doing.

My entire goal of going to comic con this year was to get signatures on some prime books. I took with me two copies of Batman (2011) #1 sketch cover. I already had a cgc ss 9.8 grade on both with Scott Snyder sigs on both. I also took a #1 fifth print cgc ss 9.8 grade with Snyder sig on it as well.

To round out my need to have signed books - I took with me seven Crisis on Infinite Earths books I had in my in hand that didn't have signatures on them.

#3, #4, #5, #6, #9, #10, and #11. All were already graded at 9.8 and the #4 had already been ss with George Perez's sig.

So the goal was simple George Perez and Marv Wolfman were both attending, now all I had to do was the whole SS route with a CGC witness and everything.

I was able to accomplish it in one day and like I said in part one, I highly commend all the individuals that worked the CGC booth the whole time I was there. No only did they come with me for not one, not two, but three treks through the con to get all my signatures.

    Fait accompli!!!

CGC took my books, took my money (which I gave willingly and gladly and for the price and also the price was extremely reasonable for what I did) and then the waiting period began. With the backlog of books from the con, the scheduled wait time was three months. For the first month I watched for my invoice to convert from received to the next step...

Fast forward - month #2 - books went from step to step and after spending one week under quality control I got the coveted email that the books were on the way back to me. Now granted all books had been previously graded at 9.8 so I was 65% sure that the grades would be okay even after all the handling that was done to get them all signed... and as the picture shows these are my results.

80% happy with the results and the other 20% is reserved for something I have planned for the two books that didn't make the 9.8 cut...

Now I get to add them to my registry and if it goes like I think it will I completely apologize to the #1 spot.

I didn't do it on purpose, but I did do it.

On a side note - I still need Batman #1 third print and fourth print both in 9.8, so if you have them or an extra copy I am in the market for them.

anyway thanks for reading and as always enjoy the experience of collecting, because it is for enjoyment, at least for me it is and if you can get to a #1 spot, congratulations!

  2. Officially boycotting teasers...

Even though I don't have a lot registered at the moment, a graded run of X-Men 1-300 is my primary collecting focus. I do have many things in the works, such as books lined up for signatures and should have a nice boost to my set in the coming months, but currently it is somewhat skimpy.

I normally try to get my own books signed mainly because it is usually more cost effective, but I could not pass this one up after accidentally running across it on eBay a few days ago. I feel based on the sold prices of universal 9.8s and the cost of getting a book signed multiple times, this was a bargain!

So without further ado, the latest addition to my collection, X-Men #130, first appearance of the lovely Alison Blaire aka "Dazzler", signed by Stan Lee, Chris Claremont, John Romita Jr., Terry Austin and Jim Shooter!

  4. Wow...

So...for the longest time I've had this issue loose in a comic box...I bought it loose off of some dealer on eBay. The issue was in pretty bad shape...crinkled upper corner and bends, dents and creases all over the front AND back covers on this poor thing...the dealer even, once finding out my grading intentions for the book, tried to talk me out of spending the money on the book that I spent(like $40 I think).

But I had hope. I had a dream. I had a vision...well...not really...I just knew I had never seen the book before and I really wanted it regardless...I mean c'mon, it's a variant cover featuring Magik! It could have had a footprint on it and I would've at least thought about it lol...but moving on...

So that took place around two years ago...

Fast forward to the night before this year's Wizard World Chicago and there I sat, looking at a comic box populated solely by books that I've set aside here and there over time with the intent on grading them...it's in the back of this box that the issue had sat buried for nearly two years...

When I stumbled across it I smiled almost like finding an old friend in a shopping mall at Christmastime...I pulled it out of the Mylar and boards I had sheltered the poor mistreated thing in and placed it on the table in front of me and sighed...it was such a cool book...don't have the slightest inkling where it was released or it's print run for that variant cover...but I didn't care one shred...

I sat there and thought to myself that, if I submitted it for grading, it would limp back to me with a 8.5 or a 9.0 as a "pie in the sky" grade and my heart sank a little more...

Then I looked at the info regarding the pressing that CCS was offering on-site at Wizard World Chicago this year and grinned a little.

I had, at that moment, decided that at Wizard World the great experiment...my first experience with pressing...would transpire for good or ill. I told myself that it didn't matter if it didn't snag a high mark like a 9.8 because of the extensive mistreatment of the issue...but only that I wanted to try and mend this really cool book and give it the proper home that such a book deserved.

With that mindset, I walked into the con the next day and submitted it and went back to the hotel bar, had a drink and hoped for the best, knowing that this wait for a book, above any other I've ever submitted, would just eat me up inside till it was returned to me in it's shiny new CGC case...

So if you've read my Wizard World Chicago report I posted a while back then you know how this played out for me...again I say ugh!

So guess what came in the mail today? Yup, my newly pressed and graded variant with my favorite character on the cover, sporting a 9.8 grade! I wish so badly that I had taken "before" pictures to post alongside of this so I could show you all how amazing of a job the CCS gang did with this book...if I didn't know any better I would say that this wasn't even my original book...

Behold the power of pressing... :)

  6. Wonder if CGC will lower grade due to this...

So I'm assuming plenty of you have seen the "Deadpool Kills Deadpool #1" My Little Ponies Variant. (If not, there's plenty on eBay- 1500 copies were sold at SDCC.) Whether you love or hate My Little Ponies (I was actually a big fan of them as a kid), this variant is actually pretty cool/funny. I just recently picked one up to have slabbed, and realized that there's a discoloration on the Daredevil pony. At first I was frustrated, thinking my comic was damaged. However, after looking through about 20 copies from different sellers, I've realized this discoloration seems to be on all of them.

To me, this begs the question: will this discoloration affect my grade on it? Or will the CGC note that all issues have this, and thereby not call it a defect? Either way, love this cover, and am very happy to add it to my collection!

I have a nice higher grade copy of Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (1968) that has quite a bit of warping and waviness running along the entire length of the spine. Has anyone seen this on other..

Marvel Silver-Age square-bound comics? I don't think this is caused by moisture damage (I would have seen moisture marks on the paper). I have seen this also occur on some (but not all copies) of Marvel Super-Heroes #12 also. I don't consider this a defect, but something that may have been caused during the original printing process.

I have attached scans of the covers, hopefully it clearly shows what I'm referring to.

Please share any experience you've also had with this strange occurrence.

    Cheers!

Please let the grading gods be with me on this one....

Its that time again. I will be sending 5 raw books out to be graded. I have a box of about 30 EC comics that I have accumulated that need to be graded. The last run didnt go as well as I wanted so Im hoping for better luck this time.

Usually I send a book in thinking its a 7.0 and I get a 5.0 back....so this time i am not going to have high expectations. Ive learned I only get bummed once the verdict is read. So to spare myself the the unpleasantness Im going to think low and cross my fingers.

    The list is as follows....

    Weird Fantasy 12

    Weird Science 16

    Crime Suspenstories 24

    Vault of Horror 20

    Vault of Horror 35....

I have been buying graded comics the last couple months which I think is best unless your getting a raw book for dirt cheap.

But I have quite a few goodies in this box. Wish me luck, and I will post the grades when I receive them with a photo.

    Please God no purple labels.....ugh

    cheers.

the series that got me back into comics

My brother and I walked into a local comic store back when I was 14 and he was 11. The only real collecting we had done was throwing the issues in drawers and boxes that my father would bring home from work for us to read, but this time was different. We saw this beautiful cover on the stand, it was Ultimate Spider-Man #98.

When we realized what this series was, and how iconic it had become, we dove right into the back issues. We'd drop the little money we had back then trying to complete full story arcs, piecing together the run bit by bit. It took us 4 years, and a pretty intense purchase of Ultimate Spider-Man #1 CGC'd at a 9.6 for us to finally complete our collection. We had only recently submitted our own private issues in order to get signed and graded, and we couldn't be happier.

We got the run of Death of Spider-Man variants (unfortunately to Quesada variants we never got our hands on) all signed and graded at a 9.8.

    We feel pretty damn baller.

  11. Do I look or not?

I recently sent in four books for grading using my Membership Coupon. After repeated attemps at picking just four to send in I finally settled on the winners. So, yesterday after 16 business days they were marked as Shipped Safe. Temptation was killer, one click and I could see my grades. I was taking an approach I read in surfer99's post of waiting until they arrived to see the grades.

24 hours later that thought went out the door. I couldn't resist and peeked just a little. The books and grades are listed below.

Uncanny Avengers #1 Deadpool Sketch Variant - 9.8

    Peter Panzerfaust #1 - 9.8

    Peter Panzerfaust #2 - 9.8

Peter Panzerfaust #3 - 9.6 ( I guess issue 3 is my Kryptonite - third one sent in and all have come back 9.6)

Does anyone else have a particular comic that they have sent in multiple times to get that 9.8 or higher?

Thanks for reading and now back to the process of selecting the next group to send in.

  12. I am really new to this so...

OK. I am curious about some "rarer" comics. I understand the whole 30/35 cent price variant thing, but I still don't understand how a "Double Cover" effects the value of a comic. I know they are pretty rare, but I've never really heard a general rule of thumb for how one of those covers change the value... Is it one of those thingswhere, "it's whatever someone will pay?" What about miscuts? I have a miscut for SECRET INVASION COMICS issue 1, or, at least I think it's a miscut. I have attatched pictures and was hoping one of you knowledgeable comic experts out there will be able confirm its collectibility and give me a value?????????????? If this comic turns out to be worthless, like I said, I am new to this. And yes, I know these pictures are very poor quality. THANKS

  13. The Fear of Re-Submitting, real or not?

Well folks, the fear of a downgrade by resubmittal is real. As an avid DD collector, I have probably more DD WP SS issues than anyone. But with SS copies, especially signed by key artists or writers, the thought of investment potential also comes into play.

I have almost exclusively used previous CGC graded 9.8WP copies for any signing and resubmission. I presumed that a 9.8 issue sealed in evidentary plastic should remain a 9.8. I have rarely submitted raw comics for signings, but have done so with both wonderful and disappointing results...

I have used Desert Wind, Paradise Comics and Rich Henn for all my Stan Lee submissions. They all provide a professional service, and vary in price and service a bit, but nothing to complain about here.

I recently broke out my VISA card and submitted 6 DD 9.8WP comics for a Stan Lee signature, all early Silver Age issues.

    DD 26, 27, 34, 36, 40 and 53.

DD 26 and 53 we from the Gregg Schmell collection and paid for dearly. They were older CGC registry numbers.

DD 27 and 36 were older CGC graded issues.

DD 34 and 40 were done more recently.

The results were DD26 hit 9.8WP, thank goodness...

but DD 27, an older registry number, was dropped to 9.6.

as were DD 34 and 36 that also dropped to 9.6.

DD 40 hit 9.8, as did DD 53, but the color on 53 was graded to OWW.

Thats 4 out of 6 comics taking a hit. I may resubmit the DD 34, as to my eye...it is perfect...

I am sure you can calculate the dollar value difference in the down grade from 9.8 to 9.6, even the loss due to OWW pages.

The DD 27 was actually downgraded to 9.4, but Rich re-submited it and it was raised to 9.6.

Lessons learned. The older the CGC registry number, the GREATER the chance of getting a downgrade, as the page color may diminish, and subtract just enough ZAP from your comic to have the CGC folks pick the 9.6 number. Urban legand says re-submit the small label older comics and the "New" standards may give you a 9.8...forget it. It's just legend.

Next. Have an expert look at the book closely IN THE SLAB, as you may see minor imperfections that ring up the risk bell.

Last. With modern pressing, I think the 9.8 number is much higher to achieve than even a few years ago. Maybe it is purely business, as they want to sell you the pressing service too??

In any case, most silver age books at 9.8WP are the Top Shelf of the industry. ANYBODY can find a 9.6 and get it signed. if you are going to take a risk, use a RECENTLY slabed book, and if you are clever, request the prior grading notes and review them carefully, and if you decide to go for it...TAPE THEM to the COVER of the SS and resubmitted books. Use a respected SS team who can call CGC personally and request a second look if necessary, even if you have to pay for it!!

Or dont. Just be happy you have a 9.8 book and buy a 9.6 one to have Stan the man sign!!! It will probably be the top SS book anyway!!

    Having fun,

    Matt Holly

    Big Dc comics fan here

My favorite Dc comic heros are Green Arrow and Hawkman. I don't know I guess I'm sort of different from the rest of the bunch to pick these two heros. Believe it or not they don't even get along with each other in the justice league comics. Green Arrow is a Liberal and Hawkman is a Conservative at least that's what I heard. Any way I happen to like them both for there differences, another thing I want to bring up, while I'm on this journal. If a person gets a purple label from CGC meaning restored and it's a mondern comic is that the automaticaly the kiss of death as far as the resale value?

My first submissions turned out about how I had expected.. except

I have been buying comics for awhile and paying a little to a lot more for CGC slabbed books, or paying for whatever comic shop I was stationed near to mail them off to CGC. I finally did a cost analysis and found that it was more cost effective to just get a membership to CGC. So fast forward....

With my coupon I submitted four books, all DC New 52: Batman 1, Justice League 1, Green Lantern 1, Action Comics 1. All four were sketch variants and all four were in, from what I could tell in my grading experience 9.6 to 9.8. It turns out I was fairly accurate with them.

    Batman = 9.8

    Green Lantern = 9.8

    Action Comics = 9.8

Here is the curve ball to my expectations... Justice League was a 9.4. Now I'm wondering, did they get damaged in shipment or did I miss something? Again, all four comics were in the same condition in my opinion when they were boxed up. I packed them very well, each comic bagged and boarded, individually sandwiched between two 200lb test pieces of cardboard and then packed two books to a Bags Unlimited 200lb cardboard comic mailer with card board cuts filling the gap. Both boxes were then taped together and wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in another box filled with bubbled wrap.

Anyways, I have four more getting graded now, Batman 2 sketch, and 3 x Robyn Hood: Wanted 1's CS Moore Ltd 100. I'll see if that was a fluke or if I need to go back to comic grading school. My predictions are:

    Batman 2: 9.8

    RH:W 1: 9.8 x 2

RH:W 1: 9.9 or better x 1. I opened up the cardboard sandwiching and this book virtually started glowing and trumpets started playing from the heavens. I searched high and low for a defect using my jewelers glass and all and couldn't find one.

They are scheduled for grading now, so in a few days I should know.

Surprisingly earlier than expected. Must say I'm pretty happy with the turnout. With just a few minor exceptions.

Walking dead #1-7, 19, 27, Portland WW #1; Marvel Zombies #1; Locke & Key #1; Batman #1 Variant; Spawn #150 Variant; Escape to Wonderland #0 Variant. All are 9.8 except for Walking Dead #7 9.2 and Marvel Zombies #1 9.6.

I've noticed a couple small air pockets on back of a few slabs. Is this a concern?

Hmm. Total newb here, but is there a way to add more than one photo? -Oh well. I improvised. Here they all are....

    Worst Customer Service Ever!!!

So I bought the 4 most random Walking Dead graded books ever on eBay this week (67,74, 81, 86, all 9.8's). All random backissues, with no real importance to the series at all. All 4 were single auctions that were ending within the hour, and I needed all 4 books anyways. I read the auctions and it didn't say anything about combined shipping, but I, like a , assumed that because the other 98% of ebay will combine on shipping with CGC's assumed that this guy would too. I messaged him to ask, but got no reply to it. So I won all 4 after adding bids averaging about $50 a piece. So I message him again asking if he can combine shipping, and mention that the USPS Flat Rate Medium box can hold all 4 and ship for less than $15. Nothing! For about 36 hours, so I message this guy again. "Can you please update and combine shipping?" Before I forget to mention that he is charging $15 per book, times 4, that's $60 for shipping for these 4 books that I did not really need as much as I thought.

I get this message in return (I deleted the email, so I am loosely quoting him):

"I do not combine shipping of books, and nowhere in the auction is there even a hint of combining. I pack them with bubble wrap each in it's own box. Sorry. Besides, only an insufficiently_thoughtful_person would combine CGC books in a package. And, as far as cost you really should do your homework next time before throwing prices out there."

    So I send back:

I did my homework when I shipped out 3 similar books today actually using the same box and it was $12.49. Can you help me out? Or can we cancel the transactions? Can you at least put two in a box and I'll take responsibility for them past that point?

I get this back (This is the real email):

You made the mistake and you should take responsibility for it and pay the bill. You assumed something that was not mentioned at all. If don't pay the bill that is your choice. It is people like you that should not even be on ebay.

So, my feedback is 864, with 5 stars in almost all categories and only a few bad over the 6 years I've been on there. His is 86. This is by first the worst customer service I have ever gotten in my life. He insulted me right away out the gate basically calling me an insufficiently_thoughtful_person. I supervise 250 people whos basic job is customer service. I would have fired this individual_without_enough_empathy on first look at both emails.

Because I don't want to damage my ebay account I paid the *spoon*. I'm just wondering how great this books really are, and his immaculate shipping job. I can't wait to get them. This guy is someone who is on this very site (starts with a V). I guess my advice is read it before you buy it. Because this guy is the biggest individual_without_enough_empathy I've dealt with while collecting. Fanboys!!!!

    On a side note...

I recently got my TWD 1-10 back from the CGC, and they sure as mess had no problem shipping them together. What a bunch of insufficiently_thoughtful_persons!!!

  18. Spider-man signings on the greatest cover ever!

This started as soon as I saw the Amazing Spider-man 700 Marcos Martin Variant issue and realized the potential of getting all these signatures of all of the people who had a hand in creating the world Peter Parker/Spider-man lives in. The cover just lends itself to this as these names pop as a city scape as Spider-man swings overhead.

I thought this would be the greatest collection of creators/writers/artists to ever be on a book at one time. So, I went about collecting 6 books from Amazon at a great price. And had Joeypost press 6 books. He also identified 5 of them as 9.8 candidates. The remaining 3 came from eBay as 9.8s. So, I was atleast ensured 3 9.8 books upon return (fingers tightly crossed).

I shipped 2 of my 9.8s to Sean for the Masters signing in which I'll be getting Stan Lee, John Romita, John Romita Jr and Tom DeFalco. I've also asked Sean to get some additional sigs at Philly Wizard World (Barry Kitson & Bob Layton). This will then close the loop for these sets of books. The picks have looked great so far (though I'm not the only one who had this idea, so I can't figure out which ASM 700 is mine).

For the remaining books, I took 5 of the best books with me which included the other CGC 9.8 to WonderCon. It was a great experience as I met with all of the guests. I waited patiently in line to meet a bunch of the guests and covered the entire floor at least 50 times.

My first stop at WonderCon was JM DeMatteis who was really cool and easy to talk to. He signed all 5 books in blue which make the sig really POP! Unfortunately, he smeared one of the sigs and per the CGC guy automatically drops the books grade a point or 2. I was devastated. My first experience with this and I've already received a "FAIL". So, I decided not to include this book with the rest of the submission. So, I was down to 4 books.

The rest of the day went great as more people signed the book without incident. Whew!

The second day was "DAN SLOTT" day as he tweeted he'd only sign during a certain period of time and made sure to tell everyone this would be his only West Coast visit for the year. So, I made sure I grabbed my books from CGC and lined up as soon as they opened. As I was waiting in line, Dan mentioned that he hated these Window Boxes which show him wear to sign. The people in front of me (Desert Wind) were first up after he mentioned this and began to tear all of the plastics apart and then signed each book. I was shocked and scared he'd do the same to my books since they had windows for him to sign through. I wonder if those books came back as 9.8s or higher? Seriously, it was crazy!!!

As I neared Dan, I was so worried about what was coming next and the books being manhandled. But to his credit, Dan looked at how nervous I was and said, "You're not with them, right?" Them being Desert Wind and I said "No, and please don't rip my plastics." He then smiled, signed my books and posed for a picture with me. It was AWESOME!

My next stop was Mark Waid who I happen to run into at a booth signing. I was so luck to have stumbled across him. He posed for pictures and signed my books. This was getting fun. Then it was on to Desert Wind to pick up my Stan Lee tickets.

Getting Stan Lee's autograph was different then I expected. I thought he'd say, "Hi" and make a little small talk. Unfortunately, it wasn't that way. I was told where to go and herded with other fans just like cattle on a chow line. They said no pictures and have your books out. I didn't even give my books to Stan, someone took them plopped them in front of him and he signed away. Stan didn't even look up to see who it was or anything. And I couldn't even linger as they moved me through the exit. It was rough and definitely a poor experience for me. It was my first time to ever "meet" Stan as I've submitted other books via Desert Wind, so I never got to see him in person.

After this was done, I left my books at Desert Wind since they deal with Stan stuff ONLY! I then heard Olazaba was signing and I didn't mind adding another sig to the books, so a Desert Wind rep came with me to the signing. Now this really freaked me out. After Olazaba signed my books, the Desert Wind guy said, "You need to give me the books now, so I can walk them back to the booth." I was shocked by this since CGC let me carry them to the booth as I gently held them. The Desert Wind guy put all 4 books together and "pinched" them as he held them with one hand. And the madness didn't stop there as he wouldn't go back to the Desert Wind booth and walked everywhere "pinching" my books. IT WAS HORRIBLE!

No disrespect to Sharon and Chandler, but this guy was extremely disrespectful of my comics and didn't care what I wanted. ARGH! Anyways, I left Desert Wind a little weary of the new status of my books. And prayed I would get a 9.6 after all of that nonsense.

After calling CGC a month after the show, I was hopefull that my books would be graded generously and hoping for a 9.6. As luck would have it, when I called for the 2nd time, my books were finally graded and received 9.8s across the board. I was SHOCKED and EXCITED! I guess the CGC gods were smiling down on me!

Now, I've contacted someone who's going to help me get some additional sigs in Phoenix. WooHoo! If things work out, I should get them back in time for SDCC (fingers crossed) for some more signatures.
