About this journal

I have two creative projects I will be discussing in this journal.

The first is The Crimebusters, a new comic series I am writing and drawing. Picking up where Boy Comics left off, The Crimebusters #120 is set in the fall of 1956, with Chuck Chandler — aka Crimebuster — returning to Curtiss Tech for his junior year of college. As always, though, intrigue and mystery abound, as Chuck is reluctantly forced to team up with girl reporter Trixie Trouble to investigate the shocking death of a beloved professor. This is my first comic book, so it's a real learning process trying to make it; I will be detailing that process here. I hope to have the issue complete by the end of March, with the goal of heading to Kickstarter in April for a May publication date. We'll see how it goes though!

The second project I have is the Classic Comics Forum Podcast, where I discuss classic comic book runs. I'm aiming for an episode a month at this point, and will provide updates whenever new episodes become available.

Thanks for reading!

The Crimebusters #2 - special announcements

This year has been a series of kicks to the junk, but luckily, it's nearly over! And I do have a couple cool announcements. Tomorrow, I'll be appearing on a Disney YouTube livestream to discuss my comic and how the latest issue was influenced by Disney theme parks! And this weekend, I'll be appearing at the NorthEast Comic Con in Boxboro, MA, so if you're at the show, stop by and say hi! I made a little video about these announcements: https://youtu.be/WJlXIn03IAo

The Crimebusters #2 - Happy Halloween!

Life has been extra lifey this year, so I haven't had much time to post updates. And the next couple of months are going to be among the busiest of my life, so I don't know how often I will be able to update everyone. But I am making progress on The Crimebusters #2. I'm currently working the linework for page 26 of 31 on the main story, and I'm still expecting to head to Kickstarter in January. I took a little time away from that to color the regular cover for issue #2. There will be at le

October Case Files update coming tomorrow

Every month I email readers the latest Crimebusters Case Files - and tomorrow I'll be sending out the October edition. This month's Case Files will include my thoughts on the one element every good story must have. Plus, I'll have a progress update on issue #2, news about upcoming con appearances, a report about last month's show including mini-reviews of some comics I picked up there, recommendations for current Kickstarter projects, and the creation of a new resource for fans of Golden Age sup

Another update!

Man, the updates are coming fast and furious! I've just finished setting up a new mailing list entry portal, and I wanted to share it with everyone here. I just send out one email a month to give updates on The Crimebusters - a little more often when it's actually time for a new issue - so if you're interested, it's a great way to get the direct scoop. Anyone who signs up now will get a welcome email that includes a link to a new digital ashcan which has short previews for both issues 1 and

The Crimebusters #2 - Boy Comics #121 Variant Cover question

First, thanks to everyone who supported the first issue of The Crimebusters and helped make it a reality. I'm super grateful! I'm currently hard at work on the second issue, and one thing I'm trying to figure out it what to do for the Boy Comics #121 variant.  I've got two basic options - I could do an all-new original design, or I could do another homage cover. I think a lot of people really liked the homage to Captain America Comics #3, so I am leaning towards doing another homa

The Crimebusters - con report!

I attended my first convention as an artist over the weekend, so I wrote up a little thing about the experience here, including a short video diary about the con and the comics I ended up bringing home myself:crimebustercomics.com/2019/09/16/catamount-comic-expo-convention-report/

The Crimebusters - a personal note

In my latest blog entry, I get personal about some of the challenges I have faced this summer. Thank you for the support, everyone.  https://crimebustercomics.com/2019/09/08/a-personal-note/

The Crimebusters - Con Update!

It's been too long since I updated here, but I've just been super busy. I have now sent out rewards to almost everyone, just a couple stragglers. There was a bit of a snafu at the printer with some variants that delayed things by a couple weeks, but in the end, everything worked out.  I'm hard at work on the second issue at the moment, just finishing up page 11. Things are going faster this time around, so I hope to have the issue done in November, but I will probably wait until January to

The Crimebusters #2/121 - first look

The Kickstarter has ended and I'm just waiting for the copies of The Crimebusters #1 to arrive from the printers! If anyone missed the Kickstarter and wants a copy or copies, let me know and we'll figure something out when they arrive! In the meantime, I'm keeping busy by working on #2! The second issue is called "The Secret of the Ghost Bride." It features Chuck and Trixie investigating a haunted house. With a twist: there might be some time travel involved, thanks to the surprise ret

The Crimebusters #1 - Kickstarter complete!

The Kickstarter campaign for the first issue of The Crimebusters is complete, and was a rousing success. Thanks so much to everyone who supported it! I'm really looking forward to sending out the comic and hearing what you all think. And I'm hard at work already on issue #2, so I'll certainly be sharing plenty more as we go. Thanks!

The Crimebusters Kickstarter - final 48 hours

Hey there! We're inside the last 48 hours, so I have composed another update (well, a couple really since last time I posted here).  I also just wanted to remind everyone that may be interested that this Kickstarter is going to end shortly, so if you do think this is a comic you'd be interested in, now is the time! Most of the variant covers will be printed in very small numbers, and the Kickstarter Exclusive Variant Cover in particular (which is an homage to Flash Comics #92) is going

The Crimebusters - just 5 days left!

A little update here. In the week since we passed $1000, we've pretty much hit a full stop. I think the amount has only gone up by $26 in the last week, with just two new backers. But I had heard that's how these things go, so while it's a bit disappointing, it's not surprising. I am still occasionally getting new "followers' - these are people who have asked Kickstarter to remind them about the project when there are two days left - so it's possible some of those people will back at the end.

The Crimebusters #121 (2) - first peek!

I've been so focused on getting the Kickstarter up and running for the first issue of my Boy Comics revival The Crimebusters that I haven't had any time to actually begin working on the second issue. This weekend, though, I was finally able to start working on it! Here's an early look at the first draft linework for the regular cover for the second issue. I'm hoping to do the Legacy Number Variant cover soon as well, which will have the #121 on it instead of #2 - and which will be an h

The Crimebusters #120 (#1) - now LIVE on Kickstarter!

Aaaaah! I'm super excited to announce that my comic The Crimebusters is now live on Kickstarter! Finally!  Thanks to everyone for all the support throughout this process. As you guys know, bringing Chuck Chandler back to life has been a goal of mine for over a decade now, so this is really exciting for me, and I can't wait to share this comic with you. If anybody has any questions aout the project, or about the Kickstarter campaign, let me know! https://www.kickstarter.com/pr

The Crimebusters #120 (#1) - The Final Countdown!

Just a few days left until this thing launches on Kickstarter on June 11. In my latest project blog, I discuss the printing process, getting my Kickstarter campaign ready to launch, and the big news of the day: the first copy has arrived!! It's real! https://crimebustercomics.com/2019/06/08/the-final-countdown/

The Crimebusters #120 (#1) - Boy Comics Variant!

Here's the final variant cover for the first issue. Of course, the whole point of this originally was to make new issues of Boy Comics, so there has to be a cover with the Boy Comics logo and numbering. And there is!       Here's a look at all four covers for this first issue. sorry for the slight blurriness, the site here automatically squeezes the image to a certain size like it or not:         Less than a week until the Kickstarter on Ju

The Crimebusters #120 (#1) - Trixie Trouble Mysteries Variant Cover

Here's the next of the variant covers for the first issue of my new comic, The Crimebusters, launching on Kickstarter June 11.  Since I am planning to do a Boy Comics variant cover every issue starring Crimebuster, I thought it would only be fair to also do a variant cover every issue featuring his new partner, Trixie Trouble. So I'm going to do a variant every issue re-imagining the story as a classic young adult mystery novel. Here's the first of the Trixie Trouble Mysteries variant cover

The Crimebusters #1/120 - Kickstarter Exclusive Legacy Number Variant

The Kickstarter will launch two weeks from tomorrow! Over the next week or so, I'll be revealing the three variant covers. Here's the first one! This is the Kickstarter Exclusive Legacy Number Variant - this will be available at the same price as the regular cover, but will only be available as a Kickstarter reward; I won't be selling any copies outside of Kickstarter. So if you like this one, get it while it's hot! Of course, this is an homage to Flash Comics #92 by Carmine Infantin

The Crimebusters #1/120 - big news!

Big news!! The first issue is off to the printers for proofing! I'm totally stoked! I've also been wrestling for awhile with the numbering for this first issue. I really, really want to keep the legacy numbering from Boy Comics, but at the same time, I know there are some (weird) readers who may not even give the series a try if it's got a #120 on the cover. So... I've decided to just print copies with both numbers and let people choose whichever number they want. To be honest, I'm not s

The Crimebusters #120 - Kickstarter goals and Squeeks the crimefighting monkey!

Getting close to the June 11 launch on Kickstarter! Right now, I'm neck deep in Kickstarter stuff, so I decided I'd share some of that process with everyone in my new blog. And I'm sure I'll be writing a lot more about the process and experience as things progress! crimebustercomics.com/2019/05/17/kickstarter-101-goals-stretch-goals-and-rewards/ The main things: my initial goal is $500, but if we hit the $800 stretch goal, I will be adding a 4-page Squeeks solo back-up story to the book,

The Crimebusters #120 - quick update

The comic may be done, but that doesn't mean the work is finished! I'm currently doing a bunch of production stuff — formatting, editing, all that fun nonsense. My hope is that by the end of next week it will be ready for the printer. I'm also toiling away at the Kickstarter campaign. I have a couple really cool rewards to share with you down the road, but for now, here's a look a the custom Funko Pops that I hand painted; a very limited number of these will be offered when The Crimebusters goes

The Crimebusters #120: coming to Kickstarter on June 11!

The book is done! And I'll be bringing it to Kickstarter on June 11, where you can pre-order the book and get some cool variant covers and other fun rewards. I'll be revealing some of those rewrds in the coming weeks, but for now, here's a link to a short blog entry about the Kickstarter announcement: https://crimebustercomics.com/2019/05/02/were-heading-to-kickstarter-on-june-11/   and here's a short video I did announcing the project:

The Crimebusters #120 update: the art is finished!

Hello, friends! I am excited to share with you that the first issue of The Crimebusters is now done! Sure, I have a few things left — like a two page text piece, and the inside front cover — but the art is now complete for the 30 page story! I've been working on the art since October, so I am thrilled to finally finish it. My first comic! I can't wait to get a copy in my hands.  I'm also looking forward to sharing it with everyone. Next week I'll be announcing the date when this will go live
