The Death and Return of Superman Multiple Printing Saga

My journey into this wonderful hobby began in early 1994, when I found The Death of Superman graphic novel at Kroger, I was 11 years old then. The graphic novel collected the seven issue storyline "Doomsday!", the comic book colors inside hooked me. I had heard of this “event” but I was so late to the party that it was over. The Death and Return of Superman story arc was a trilogy of storylines; "Doomsday!", "Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Supermen!", all ancient history by '94. After I got The Death of Superman graphic novel I searched out issues for  "Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Superman!," not an easy task for a kid with no job (or allowance 'cause I never did chores), who's only transportation were his parents or the school bus. I was able to catch up thanks to few Toys-R-Us trips, where late comers like myself were able to pick up various two packs and packaged sets of comics, with a lot of Superman books. I found most of the issues I needed for "Funeral for a Friend" this way. As I got more into collecting I decided I wanted to have the individual "Doomsday!" issues, even thou I had them nicely collected in TPB form, after another Toy R Us trip, I got all those issues from a box set.

As I started accumulating price guides, poly bags and backing boards a monster began to gestate, who became concerned about condition and value. I then discovered there were actually multiple printings for many of these issues, and the first printings were more valuable! Each printing after the first edition was notated by a roman numeral, next to the issue number and price on the top left corner of each cover. The cover art remained the same with each subsequent printing but the title logo color scheme changed for each issue’s printing. After realizing this the 2nd, 3rd and so on printings I had were tarnished in my eye. All of my "Doomsday!" issues were later printings, and not worth the paper they were printed on, and most of my 'Funeral' issues were the same. As the years went on, and the prices went down, I replaced many of my later printings with first prints, recycling the paper rags I had before.

Then CGC came along....

Around 2007 I decided to start CGC Registry set for this storyline, all 9.8, first prints only, yet by the early 2010's I re-discovered the later printings, becoming enticed by the thrill and challenge of trying to find these books in high grade. I love how unexpected all of this was, I know I never thought the later printings would ever be collectible, and I think it's safe to say I wasn't the only one.

Here are my CGC examples thus far, keeping the thrill of the hunt alive.

Some of my childhood books also survived, thankfully.

I too have picked up several of these and enjoy them.  Although this is another one of those rabbit holes.. I think they are up to 19 or 10 prints!

It is a rabbit hole! The thought of having the first two printings and the Platinum Edition of the TPB in 9.8 grade has been lurking in the back of my mind.

I’ve had a few chances to get the first print and the Platinum Edition in 9.8 but I passed.

Great find!  Here’s a rabbit hole for ya!

I picked this up while in Japan somewhere between ‘94-‘97. I got it from a flea market and never saw it in stores there. It is nowhere near minty fresh, but I have thought about getting it pressed/graded just to get it in the census. The color cover is a slip cover and the actual cover is B/W. I wonder how CGC would grade that?  If they would leave slipcover on, etc?

Wow, that’s neat! Thanks for sharing.

Can TPBs be pressed? The 2nd printing copy I just got looks really good but does have a long indent line on the cover that does not break color.

Thanks. I actually don’t know for sure, I’ve never tried it.

Here it is, my most valuable book. The one that started it all for me. The copy of The Death of Superman that I found in January or February of 1994.

I was 11, I’ll never forget thumbing through the pages. It was the Daily Planet scenes and the brief appearance of Clark Kent that stood out to me the most. I had heard of this event, but it wouldn’t find me until that day in ‘94. I asked me mom if I could get this book but she told me next time. I couldn’t wait until the next trip.

24 years and a lot of comics later.

I have fallen in!

Speaking of Rabbit Holes, it's also one of my favorite restaurants in town!

A very cool place, where you walk down the stairs to a different atmosphere.

Here you can try the White Rabbit Cocktail with Vanilla Vodka, Coconut Rum, and Flaming Marshmallow.

This is also one of my favorite songs.

You may ask yourself, what does this have to do with Superman?

Absolutely nothing!

This is awsome! Really like the restaurant! Looks like an amazing place. I remember seeing Florence + the Machine at DelunaFest on Casino Beach in 2012 ( where in their set list they played that exact song! They also had an amazing line up of other artists including.  Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters,  Dwight Yoakham, DJ Jazzy Jeff, The Wallflowers , Joan Jett and The Black Hearts , Band of Horses,  Zack Brown Band, and a Bunch more! Plus it was Joan Jetts Birthday and Foo Fighters sang happy Birthday to her! Thank you for sharing as this brought back memories!

What... does this have to do......... with Superman?????????  'Absolutely nothing', says YOU!  This cannot be possible, perhaps there is an 'S' somewhere on the menu, or they serve 'soup'.  Ah ah, you enter from a sidewalk and I absolutely do recall that time Superman was standing on a sidewalk! :golfclap:

Seriously though, looks like an awesome restaurant and that concert sounds like it was blast!

P.S. Also forgot to mention that there MUST have been rabbit holes in Smallville!

This seems about right to me.  I imagine they'll take around $160.00 which is right around where the last 3rd print sold for.

I already have these but I’m watching them to see what they realize.

Too bad there isn’t a Superman #75 second printing in 9.8 listed, that one has been avoiding me for too long.

Just arrived in the mail today!

P1030409.JPG.b599274e0905aaf603c3f0ede8fb92ad.JPG

The book is beautiful and the holder is flawless, a true unicorn these days!

I'm really happy, I just need the second printing to complete the five printing set for Superman: The Man of Steel #18.

Well...

...my Fifth Printing is currently at CGC for review, but that's another story for another time.

I did have a 9.8 copy of Superman: The Man of Steel #18 Second Printing a few years ago. The price was good but when it arrived, I found the top page edges had distracting yellowing, must have been exposed to fluorescent lighting for too long. A few months after I bought it, a grail for my Action Comics set found me, so I sold the second printing off, along with several other books to accommodate.

Hmmm, I've owned all all five printings of Superman: The Man of Steel #18 in 9.8, I've held each one in my hands, just not all at the same time.
