So this was my "happy purchase" from Sunday's Heritage auctions...

During college I used to work for Disney specifically working with animation sales at the Disney stores. They had recognized that I had a knack for getting people to buy things that they should not be spending money on.  It was purely based on a love of the art form and all things comics and sci-fi. Prior to working at Disney my family had taken a vacation down to Florida to go to Disney several times over the years.  At the time, MGM Studios, now known as Hollywood Studios, was my favorite.  When you went to tour the Florida Animation Department, guests were first treated to a cartoon explaining the animation process.   In that video, famed newsman, Walter Cronkite, (the other 'Uncle Walt') picked someone out of the crowd to showcase the Disney animation process.  The person he picked out of the crowd was none other then Robin Williams.  This was produced years before Aladdin.  During the short movie / cartoon, Robin is turned into an animated character as one of Peter Pan's Lost Boys, where he finds himself in a series of misadventures up against Captain Hook.   Robin may play a tourist but that tourist is Robin Williams.  "Oooooohh Tinkerbell, look at her she is so bright.  It's like being in the presence of Barbara Streisand." Robin's riffs are funny even for a theme park cartoon.  This is one of the production cels from that Disney Theme Park short.

I loved Robin's work. He always made me smile.  Whenever I want to plunge down a YouTube rabbit hole, I like to watch late night talk shows featuring Robin Williams or Don Rickles or Chappelle.

A production cel from this cartoon came up in the June Heritage Event auction.  I was one of the underbidders and that cel realized a price of $660 after the buyer's premium.  When I saw this listed in a Sunday auction on Labor Day, I figured I would make a play and hope that everyone else who bid in June was asleep at the wheel.  I took this home for $140 (168 with the buyer's premium.)  I could not be more pleased to bring this piece of Disney history home.   It brings back fond memories of family vacations, my time working with Disney collectables, and my love of animation.

The Magic of Disney Animation - Back to Neverland Production Cel (Walt Disney, 1989). The Magic of Disney Animation was a show and tour at Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios in Orlando. Originally, when Hollywood Studios opened in 1989, the Feature Animation pavilion included four connected experiences which explored the legacy of Disney animation. The tour began with the live action/animated short film entitled Back to Neverland, in which veteran newscaster, Walter Cronkite and comedian Robin Williams guided guests through the different stages of animation by turning Williams into an animated character in the form of one of the Lost Boys from Peter Pan. In this lot we have a very rare production cel featuring Robin Williams as a Lost Boy. The cel is hand-inked and hand-painted on 12 field 3-peghole acetate and includes a Walt Disney Company seal. This is a very rare opportunity not to be missed by Disney enthusiast and animation collectors. The artwork is in excellent condition.

Things I learned so far this week.

“What did you think of the meeting?"

Apparently, “If I thought the lights could support my weight I would have hung myself an hour ago.” is NOT the correct response.

I mean seriously?  Now they’re not even trying.  If you are going to attempt to scam me, at least show some effort.

Had a few meetings to go to at NYCC and then walked the floor.

How many times can you say, "Excuse me" to someone buried in their iPhone and standing in the middle of the aisle oblivious to those around them until you just bounce your way past them?

Asking for a friend.

So far I picked up three loose and incomplete Star Wars figures...

I bought the Enterprise Hallmark Ornament exclusive to NYCC only to realize that it is the Mirror Universe Enterprise... to eBay it goes.

Tooka  picture with the Far Side wall for the school of the gifted and took home the welcome back free print.  I love me some Far Side.

Bought a $5 Action Comics 359 where Superman is on trial for killing some girl's dad.

eBay is giving out $10 gift cards and iPhone tripods to take pics.

I also bought a mummy - NY Yankees pin.

Have my eye on a few books but just spent $640 with ComicLink... I am still doing better at auction.

Took a few pics and will be back around tomorrow through Sunday at various points of the day.

Thank you for sharing this as it brought back so many great memories.  I was lucky enough to see this first hand as well. I live in Florida and have been to Disney many times. Remember seeing Captain EO ( the original 1986)

So... @ADAMANTIUM Keeping it light this year... I took plenty of pics of people in costumes and some displays but I think I will hold off on them.

Here is what I picked up.

  • Weird Science 22 - Picked up from Highgradecomics / Storms for $160 - Love the cover and slowly putting this run together.
  • Marvel Tales 153 - The cover looked interesting and for $22 I couldn't beat that even in a lower grade.  Picked up from Tomorrow's Treasures
  • Action Comics 359 - Girl accuses Superman of killing her father?  For $5 let's see what happens.  Picked up from Tomorrow's Treasures
  • Hallmark Enterprise - At the Hallmark Enterprise I walked up to see what was going on this year with exclusives.  They told me about the Enterprise and how it was a con exclusive. I wasn't paying close attention and took it home for $40.  They I realized it was the "Evil Enterprise".  Meh... #NotMyEnterprise - Put it up on eBay and sold it for $70.  It ship out tomorrow.
  • eBay was handing out $10 Gift Cards and Cell Phone Camera Stands... ummm sure.  No brainer on that.  I entered both accounts in the raffle for $500.  Gift cards will be used - free $20
  • Funkos - Special thanks to the board member that hooked me up with the NYCC Pinstripe Pigeon.  I ordered the others from Funko themselves as they became available.  I picked up the other two pigeons, the Mandalorian, and Aloha Freddie all for $15 each.  If anyone else is interested you can get the Black and Red costume pigeons still from NYCC but the Mandalorian has sold out and Aloha Freddie is still available.
  • Stumbled on some old toys so I picked up a clean Hammerhead and Gammorean Guard as well as the Grey Beard Obi Wan for $7 each.
  • NY Yankees Mummy Pin... $10 sure... why not?
  • Zap - heh... was walking around with a boardie when I saw the poster for Joes that this guy had.  I saw Zap and immediately inquired.  This was on a Saturday.  Zap is notoriously hard to find with his hands in tact due to the size of the accessories cracking off his palms or his thumbs.   Even though I am getting out of Joes, I figured I would hold onto him for a bit and then offer him online.  Picked him up for $37.
  • Larry Hama sketches - When I went to pick up my sketches this year I had a great conversation with Hama that had nothing to do with GI Joe or comics and I had not seen him laugh and smile like this in years. A couple of guys behind me were foot tapping but Hama kept telling a great story after great story.   These go to my portfolio of Joe art.   I picked up a Scarlett and a Beachhead this year.
  • Not shown, I picked up two blind bags for gifts, each containing a plush cat with octopus tentacles on the bottom of them called Tentacle Kitty. $15 each.

I've watched scads of games and I'm not altogether sure what it is either.

Edit: I was thinking these were "pool" numbers, when you pick squares to randomly bet, but I'm still not certain what I'm looking at.

Yes... you pick a square out of one hundred of them and once all one hundred boxes are sold, they draw the numbers at random.   You collect at the end of every quarter if the score ends in the numbers that you have.

So... if the score is KC 18 to SF 21 at the end of any quarter I collect because I have KC 8 - SF 1
