Most likely, the seller is ok to stick with that default

My experience in your situation is that it's probably going to be a little lower than your expectations. What are CGC 9.6 copies going for?

Thanks!  The only 9.6 I have seen sell went for $225.00. That was awhile ago…problem is that I have that 9.6 and am not willing to take a big chance on another raw unless it’s got a shot at 9.6 or above. I think my 9.6 has a small chance of upgrading but I’m afraid to take a chance CPR’ing it without a safety net.

I would be interested in another CGC 9.6 if one ever became available so I could send the best one in and have the other as a back-up.

I was not aware of that option in eBay and appreciate the tip!  I’m not much of a seller, more of a buyer.

Yes, this is a rare variant/3rd printing… there is only one 9.8 right now and it’s the last 9.8 I need (out of 98 books).  I had a chance to pick up the 9.8 a couple years ago but passed because the price was high and I still needed a bunch more books. Now I’m willing to pay more… live and learn I guess!

On the bright side I have met some good people that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise, while searching for this book.

So a couple days ago this bad boy popped up on eBay for $229.99 BIN or Make Offer.  It is listed as a '9.0 Plus'.  After my unsuccessful attempt above to buy a copy that also had no shot at 9.8, I got pretty excited when seeing this listing on my phone.  I checked the pics, and although it did not look perfect I figured that at '9.0 Plus' what the heck... might as well give it a shot.  I offered $130.00... the seller immediately came back at $175.00... I countered with $140.00... he countered at $160.00!  We were really wheelin' and dealin' here... stuff was happenin'!  I made what was going to be my final offer of $150.00 which I had pre-determined was my top price for a raw copy with a sketchy shot at 9.0ish all the way to 9.6/9.8ish.

Then there was a long pause... long enough for me to get my lazy butt off the couch and to grab my laptop.  Now, the last time I had my eyeglass prescription updated was about three years ago and once I looked at this book on my laptop it became very clear that I needed my eyes checked.  Just one look at the spine made me want to run away fast.

I imagine about this time the seller was lighting a cigar and contemplating how to best spend my money, this pause gave me enough time to retract my offer.  I don't normally retract an offer once made however as long as that option exists, and as long as I procrastinate getting my eyes checked I will consider that option open to me.  If the seller had accepted I most certainly would have paid for this book and chalked it up as a lesson learned!  I am grateful however, that in this case they instead decided to take their time thinking it over... 

My Hunt Continues!!

P.S. I extended the same $150.00 offer on the first book in this entry as well and have not heard back... man, I'm bored!

Was going to post 10 hours of Peanut Butter Jelly time, but instead opted to stick to my inserts.. 

I went against ALL of my better judgment this morning…. the original book that started this entry has been listed ever since.  It was about to end last night and I sent a message saying I’d be willing to pay $175.00… no reply.

This morning it was relisted and I received an offer for $275.00. I said what the heck and sent an offer for $180.00 which is way more than I think this raw copy is actually worth.  Figured it might be fun to submit it anyways and I have met a presser that I wouldn’t have minded letting do some work on it even if I still don’t think it would ever be a 9.8. Plus, haven’t picked up anything in awhile and am bored I guess.  Anyways…

I am no longer watching this book and wish the seller well…

I attempted to get a hold of a Registry Member (not CGC Forum Member) for nearly two years about a book in this set (not this one)… sent a message about once every 3-6 months or so… nothing… always kept it light and even humorous (Merry Christmas, Happy Halloween, etc.).  In fact, the lack of reply even had me wondering if I wasn’t just talking to myself sometimes.  I finally got a reply that said he was downsizing his DC stuff and was ready to talk.

Man I was thrilled… I made what I thought was a good/fair offer… the book I use for comparison in the below message, having recently bought, is the same grade as the one we are discussing but is, in my opinion, much more of a ‘key’ than the one I was trying to buy from this member…

…nothing, no counter-offer, nothing… about two weeks later I sent another message offering pretty much anything I had Marvel (I’ve got some good stuff!) in trade as he was ‘downsizing DC’…

…again nothing, zip, nada… if I wasn't in the same ball-park as him just let me know, maybe we could get there, maybe not but at least the courtesy of a reply would have been nice (I'm not a low-baller when I'm after a book but you never know where the other person is either)... anyways, I gave it a couple more weeks and sent this final message…

I’m not one to ‘kiss and tell’ and have redacted identifiable info from the above messages (except mine, yes my first name is Jayme) but do want to say that I mean what I say in this final message to this fellow collector… to quote my favorite philosopher, Immanuel Kant, ‘Always recognize that human individuals are ends, and do not use them as means to your end.’

I really do care more about the people I meet while collecting than any book.  But, I am also a human being and have to admit that this guy has acted like a huge… declined!

P.S. it’s been almost two months since my last message… still nothing, zip, nada, silence, no reply, nothing, nada, radio silence, etc. 

I really can’t stand greedy people!  Especially when they happen upon something that they don’t even understand…

Really makes me want to say to hell with this hobby!  I understand wanting to turn a profit, but c’mon!

Thank you. Yeah it definitely is weird that I can not find it through multiple attempts at search. At least if he doesn't get any interest or views they may decide to come back to earth with their price.

It is a great looking pack… I’m not denying that. I am leery of that lower right corner though and would love to see it in person to make a better judgment call on that.

Seeing that I’m only in the market for a 9.8, and because of all the things that may be issues when removing this from the pack (foxing, etc)… I personally won’t be making an offer unless it sits around for awhile and comes somewhere near where I think we could negotiate. My risk aversion has me WAY WAY far away from the asking price.

Maybe it really is worth $2-3K to someone, just not me.  Man, I’d love to be so lucky to find a pack like this somewhere in the wild though!!

This is the perfect way to look at it. I too agree that they may sell this pack (more than likely not for that price.) I also agree that bottom corner does look like it could potentially keep it from 9.8 and that doesn't account for the possibility of foxing or OW pages or the usual culprits of the packs. Back cover color rub. So far your current 9.6 has the best shot of any I have seen at the 9.8. I too would just be happy with your current set and patient about finding the right book/price for the FINAL BOOK!
