Something Funny...

I've had a couple different WTB posts as my search for all of the books in my set progressed.  I gave up on the first couple as I was still new to the Forums and didn't understand how to put the books in one post, provide an offer price, bump it, etc.

Then on 2 June 2020 I started a fresh WTB post for the last handful of books I needed... that post led me to find a few and I also submitted a few myself to whittle the number of books down...there were finally just two, and then one... the book that this journal is about.  I've pretty much religiously bumped that post each week since then.  As I did this, on occasion I would either just bump it, or make comments about the current state of my set and how the search was going... kinda like this journal.  Anyways, once in awhile I try to be funny when I do a bump... I decided to occasionally post those attempts here (or maybe other things that I get a kick out of and want to share).  I will start with this post that I originally used to bump my WTB post on 15 July 2021... it was wildly popular with two, count them, TWO laughs!!  Here it is:

"What this book would have cost me in the 1990’s…

See, isn't that funny!?  Certainly worthy of those two laughs anyways...!  Will post more funny stuff here in the future

P.S. Here is my WTB post... I've hidden many of the bumps to keep it short but still some other stuff there:

Thanks for looking!

Posted in my WTB post on 24 October 2020 when I still also needed JLA 70 4th print in 9.8 (I ended up making the first JLA 70 4th 9.8 through my own submission!).  I thought the below was funny at the 'time'!  'Time', get it lol

Weekly bump!  I have seriously considered doing what this guy did to solve his problem...

Spoiler

image.gif.bb8175eb916b45e67bd30fa02c496850.gif

I could conceivably go back in time to when these books were plentiful in places like Toys R Us and clean the racks of them, place them in a bank's safe deposit box. and then come back forward in time and pick them up and submit directly to CGC.

There are only a couple problems with this... as I first slowed time before reversing it this would cause massive earthquakes, tsunami's etc resulting in mass death.  That would be a bummer.  It wouldn't be as simple as Lois's car just lifting out of the crevice that she perished in, or me strolling into Toys R Us... there would be suffering on a massive scale to solve this one problem.

The second problem with my plan is that as long as I have already caused humanity to go through this devastation just for me to find these books I might as well go way back in time... just as Superman could have essentially gone back to before Lex even tricked him into opening the Kryptonite chest, or heck... he could have even went back to before he challenged his Pa to a race resulting in his death (who knows how much longer Pa would have lived if not coerced into a foot race with his super-powered son!?), I could go back to 1938 and throw a couple dozen Action Comics 1 in the same safe, or I could stop WWI, WWII, or any number of other tragic things throughout history.  This is all just too much to think about and what if I made a mistake along the way!

So, unlike Superman, who selfishly decided to spin back time just to bring his 'girlfriend' who wasn't even nice to him (there are plenty of fish in the sea dude) back from the dead, I will opt to continue my search for these last two books in real time.

Appreciate any help!

This isn’t necessarily something ‘funny’ but it is something that brought a smile to my wife’s and my face.

I drive a Mini Countryman… I previously had a Mini Cooper S until I was rear ended and it was totaled. I then opted for the Countryman because I love Minis but wanted something just a little bit bigger than the coupe.

Anyways, we were out running around today… got lunch, some ice-cream, and stopped at Barnes and Noble to look around. When we came out my wife saw it first, and I was sure it was some type of flyer for a nearby business… it was not!

Someone was cool enough to leave this car tucked under my wiper blade… when I realized what it was and read the note It made me smile. Such a cool gesture from a stranger that brightened both of our days!  Thank you to whoever did this!

An item based on such a nice gesture deserves to be displayed. This will work for now but I may find a better place later. So cool!

I recently started a second set for Universal 9.8's that are Signature Series 9.8 in my main set.

I added Signature Series books to my main set to, first and foremost, collect the signatures of the creators/artists of this story... and second, to give my set balance.  I enjoy CGC Signature Series books but the completist in me would also really like to have this entire Set Type in all unmarked Universal 9.8 or above.

For This Is the Day... That a Superman Died currently has 31 Signature Series books in 9.8; I have 29 of those in Universal 9.8 also and they are in this second set.  I also included the 9.8 counterparts of my two Universal 9.9's there to cover all my Universal 9.8 bases.

Besides the last two that I still need in Universal 9.8 also, the only other books that will be added to this second set are ones that are replaced in my main set with Signature Series 9.8's... or 9.9’s; you never know!.  I have a decent number of additional Universal 9.8's that could fill many of the other empty slots in this second set but that’s not what this addendum set is for.

*I am holding onto my extra 9.8's until I find my last 9.8 just in case I end up needing them for a trade/sale... I have some good ones that you just don't see come up, such as AC 683 2nd print, Superman 76 2nd print, and a few others which I'll disclose to the owner of an Adventures of Superman 499 3rd print in 9.8 if they ever decide to talk to me , but these extras aren't going anywhere until I think I am done done with my main set...

Why did I put all this under my Something Funny entry?  I made the below image and included it in the Set Description of this second set.  I personally think it's funny and I had a good time making it... I really enjoy when people take the extra time to include pictures and descriptions in their competitive Registry sets.  It's nice to see pics and read about what an individual collector's books mean to them.  I've read through some great sets and tried to learn from others.  When I started my set it was @Brandon Shepherd's Doomsday! Funeral for a Friend Reign of the Supermen set and also @umyeahwhateversTank Girl set that inspired me to work on my pics and descriptions.  Later, @StephenWAwas cool enough to help me with using HTML in my set description.  I would be remiss if I didn't also mention @onlyweaknesskryptonitewho, unbeknownst to him, filled in many of my knowledge gaps through his posts and our discussions, which helped tremendously with my descriptions of some books.

Anyways, I hope you also get a kick out of this image...  I did have one IG user ask me if it was from a real book lol  There!  Something Funny!

This is a great place to network with likeminded collectors! I’m glad there are a few people out there who read the descriptions.

I also like seeing other sets with great descriptions, especially for titles I’ve never heard of or thought much of, as the old adage goes, when something is loved it shows.

I’ve really enjoyed seeing your set grow over the last, what is it, two years now?

Totally agree!  I have come to appreciate many different types of books through seeing what they mean to someone else. Thanks @Brandon Shepherd!

Didn’t want to make a new entry just for this and this does seem a little ‘funny’ if you ask me.

First, I will say that I understand that everyone has a price they are willing to pay for a particular item they are looking for… I get that BUT, I have also been watching the books from this set (note - the TPB is not a member of the CGC Registry set but it is obviously related) for awhile and have a fair idea where a book ‘might’ fall, give or take.  Without doing a deep dive on SOLD items I will say that the below sale is probably the most illogical (all things considered) sale that I have personally seen to date.

I recently had watched a 9.8 Platinum Death of Superman TPB sell for $215.00, which I thought was a great price for someone, so when I noticed the below regular TPB in 9.8 hit around $185.00 I took notice.

I just got done watching it end, and to be honest, if this is really what at least two people are actually willing to pay for this TPB in 9.8, then my mind is truly blown… I don’t think it being a first printing has anything to do with it either.  I guess the seller’s timing was just really good and he/she had the right people looking at the right time?!  There were five bidders...

I hope if my last 9.8 ever does pop up for sale that it is listed wherever that is as a BIN so I can then just make the call as to whether I want it that much… I definitely don’t like auctions that seem ‘funny’ and don’t want to end my set on that sort of a note (win or lose).

I agree that definitely seems to me at least to be either lack of awareness or just plain shilled. Wouldn't surprise me if it came back up for sale from the same seller.

As you said Maybe the Platinum as there were supposedly only 5,000 printed (by articles and letter I have ) but the regular direct ? I seriously doubt it . Not impossible as sometimes those seeking specific books can overpay just in the heat of the moment or they just want it, but again I have serious doubts on the veracity of this sale.

This sales data courtesy of@mycomicshopwhere one is sitting at $67.00 with four days left.  Looks like a 9.8 copy was pretty stable around $140.00 for the last year but based on the recent eBay sale, has more than doubled in the past four months.  That, along with the Platinum selling for $215.00 around the same time frame really does give me pause.

I also understand that not all buyers on eBay are aware of some of these other sources for books, and as @onlyweaknesskryptonitesaid people can get caught up in the heat of the moment bidding.  It also doesn’t seem that 9.8’s come up a lot, so who knows!

Either way, it will be interesting to see where the 9.8 on My Comic Shop ends up at..,
