This is a Streamline Pictorial Romance Journal Entry

Hello :)

Every now and again I like to collect and showcase a group of British books that sit some way off of the average collector's radar. I'm sure there are experts and romance collectors out there who know all or a bit about them, but they don't appear to have shared much information online if so. Indeed, most of them don't even appear on the GCD, with only five issues listed at the time of writing. Still, I wouldn't want to see them disappear into comic obscurity so they can have an online appreciative home here for as long as CGC keep the lights on.

I'm by no means an expert on these myself, to be clear, but I've been collecting examples for a while now and thought I'd now spread the word on them a bit to perhaps see how many we can confirm exist.

I'll add details of the indicias, size, page count and story content against each issue as I go, and will have a go at identifying the original publication reproduced too. I may have a go at identifying an order of publication too, using things like size, format, quality, pricing and font variations...

Well, it's something to do, isn't it.

I've created a Gallery for these books too, of the copies I own, if only to have a go at mucking about with available board functionality. It's a bit clunky though, the Invision Gallery software, hence this hopefully easier to read / interact with journal entry. You can find that Gallery here:

All good fun :)

So there we have it - Streamline Pictorial Romance comic books; they're crudely made, appealingly basic - rare as hens teeth (and about as valuable) - and I love them.

I hope some of you do too.

Approximately what year do you imagine these first appeared?  Maybe we'll find a cover artist signature with a date on one.

I noticed that this Streamline Pictorial Western has two cover prices in circulation - a 6d copy and a shilling one (with differing back covers, too):

I wonder if any of our Romance copies will turn up that way?

Perhaps True Love, unusually priced at one shilling, will have a 6d copy out there:

So, there are a few possibilities here:

  • It was just a one-off, like the couple of random Marvel books that have shown up in Double Doubles.
  • Our identification only seems Fox-centric because a lot of the Fox books actually have good documentation. As we fill in the blanks, we'll see more publishers.
  • Not all of Star's romance books were first publications; it's possible that Popular Teen-Agers #14 may have itself been a Fox reprint book that simply hasn't been identified because the antecedent is so rare.

I was wondering that myself. The way the title page is in that book almost suggests a reprint, and that there may be an original out there somewhere.

The title looks added on to me:

OK, curiosity got the better of me and I made offers on the two 'Redskin' books, which were accepted. Pat delivered them today pat.gif.c7cf1ac831ecfb0b855059ce7c39e628.gif

To start, here are the scans of front and back:

1617357564_Redskin26dStreamline.thumb.jpg.c778c3e33b6c283000f6e5da2852d739.jpg  1660213490_Redskin26dStreamlinebc.thumb.jpg.763828cd2d0e2474549d7ff76981641f.jpg

The shilling copy is a 52 page squarebound book, the 6d copy a 28 page saddle-stitched book:

thumbnail.thumb.jpg.359c9d7dc33378805b16e25d1d00bc6c.jpg

The indicias are as follows:

thumbnail2.thumb.jpg.c79752081539ed7fe4f430c9a9a0c58f.jpg

Both copies are printed by Dyson Bros. in Peterborough.

The opening stories and content differ:

  • One Shilling Copy:
    • Buffalo Bill
    • Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show (text story with photos)
    • Jungle Facts
    • The Iroquois Trail
    • The Wild Stallion (text story)
    • The Northwest Push
  • 6d Copy:
    • Chief Roman Nose
    • The Wild Stallion (text story)
    • Magic Arrow
    • Buffalo Bill - Super Sleuth (text story)
    • Joe Meek The Oregon Wildcat
    • Wyatt Earp and The Clanton Gang (text story with photo)

thumbnail1.thumb.jpg.d15f0d7d9e0f06dac7d3bd27e70db086.jpg

The only story both share is The Wild Stallion.

I'll have a go at matching some of the stories to original content another time, but the learning point here is that Streamline weren't averse to recycling the same title for two different books. Perhaps this is why we have two romance 'My Love Story' books, one 6d and a squarebound shilling priced copy (albeit with different covers)?

And is there a Redskin #1 I wonder?

All good fun.

I've some National Bookstore (Philippines) books with similar recycling.  Looking at the cover, one might say, "it's just a price variant".  I have no idea how to differentiate the same titled/numbered books with altered interiors on GCD.

Indeed. Alan Class recycled his covers often but each use at least had a different consecutive issue number. I'd like to see the NBS books you mentioned - maybe post them in the Philippines thread if you get time.

Either as two separate issues of the same series... 2(a) and 2(b)...or as two separate series.  Given the extreme content difference and slight cover differences, I would think 2 separate series would probably be the preferred option officially, even if I personally would prefer the first option.

Afternoon :)

I haven't forgotten about this thread, if anyone was wondering, and still have a good number of issues to work through when I get some free time.

In the meantime, I spotted this pulp while scouring online for more Pictorial Romances and found it very reminiscent of the early Streamline versions:

171817063_ReluctantHero.thumb.jpg.d7a85fed1c1bbaf08e7e4fd2fc9384de.jpg 2104414414_ReluctantHerobc.thumb.jpg.9aca03efc99802e18aa1044e69f3171b.jpg

Sure enough, it's one of theirs:

132767529_ReluctantHeroi.thumb.jpg.0408369b8784553bab522922985d661b.jpg

Curtain Road :cloud9:

Olive Baxter sounds quintessentially English, doesn't she. The author of "Journey into Danger" and "etc." would you believe.

The "etc." made me smile, suggesting somewhat that they couldn't really be bothered.

"Yeah, you know - Olive Baxter. Her that done that book. And them other ones"

Anyway, it's something to read later. I'll report back on Olive's story telling proficiency later.....

Interesting! Apparently Streamline reprinted more than just comics.

Olive Baxter is a pseudonym for British author Helen Eastwood, who also published under her own name and as Fay Ramsay. She was best known as a romance novelist, but also dabbled in mystery/thrillers. She was a prolific writer, publishing dozens of books in a career that spanned four decades: from Cinderella's Sister in 1934 to A Letter for Veronica in 1974 (and perhaps books before and after those as well, as there's not a comprehensive list that I'm aware of).

For much of her career, the vast majority of her books were initially published as hardcovers by London publisher Wright & Brown (later on, she moved to Robert Hale). WorldCat confirms this one was no exception -- the first printing of Reluctant Hero is a 1949 Wright & Brown book that was almost certainly a hardcover novel. I assume this Streamline paperback is a late '50s or possible early '60s reprint.

No idea whether the cover art here reproduces art from the original dust jacket or whether it's a Streamline creation. Unfortunately, the Olive Baxter hardcovers are fairly scarce now, and I've had no luck tracking down an image of the original. If you're so inclined, the British Library in London appears to have a copy (as does Oxford and the NLS), although no idea if it has the original dust jacket.

Marvellous!

We have a new challenge: First person to find an image of the original book.....

That's the 26th known copy now. Well, to me anyway.

So...  is it a comic or a book?  Comicbook?  Bookcomic?

I've just added this new one to my gallery, our 27th confirmed Streamline Pictorial Romance book (and my 21st):

MyJealousHeart.thumb.jpg.0afb5e2138e4f4d3696bbdb700801ab3.jpg

I love the cheap as chips cover and production values.

It reprints three stories from Fox's My Desire #3 dated 1950, two with the the splashes missing and one retitled.

MyDesireIntimateConfessions3feb1950.thumb.jpg.afe3cfa31403d18a9130d02d8554d7c8.jpg11.thumb.jpg.662aca9432cb84dc8e463f9411692b56.jpg20230911_162945.thumb.jpg.9702984a1e59e511b126521f019a2361.jpg

I'll post a full write up in the previous journal format at some point and then add it to the two content / format tables I've been running.

During my recent online searches I found this old catalogue page from 30th Century Comics website which had somehow previously avoided detection:

FoolishBride.thumb.jpg.f8d93fec13163a7c692173754d8e9993.jpg

The books are long gone but you can see reference to two new titles - 'Love Locked Me Out' and 'Foolish Bride' - and then a bumper 'He Scorned Her'. Those three take us up to 30 confirmed copies, unless 30th C. have made a mistake (which I doubt - they're on the ball, those guys). 'He Scorned Her', pictured, is only the second 68 page bumper copy after 'I Lied For Love', incidentally, and shares the same 'dumbbell' cover logo.

Could 30 be it then....? It's a nice round number.  I hope not.

Until next time :hi:

Morning, romance lovers :)

I need to do some tidying up here, but here is the 30th visually confirmed SPR which I acquired just the other week:

 HeScornedHer(Version26d).thumb.jpg.6cbd7494cf444e2c614af9111dbdfe3c.jpg

I love it <3

It's cool, because that title/cover already exists as a bumper squarebound one shilling book:

FoolishBride.thumb.jpg.8c7e993474517ae15b9dc5392e048fa4.jpg

That seems to be becoming a thing now, the reusing of titles, which is nice.

I have 30 image-confirmed books now, with another two (The Foolish Bride and Love Locked Me Out) referred to by name in reputable sources (see above).

Here are the thirty cover images saved in my files (22 of them are my copies):

Capture.thumb.PNG.6f9bea4d907758df7623e7fce053f232.PNG

I'm hoping to get back to working through and posting summaries of the contents soon :wishluck:
