I've been running into some interesting Australian digest interior contents... so allow me to showcase another before my flight out.
Love and Romance Library #98:
Come on Doug, have a heart!
This Australian digest series "Love and Romance Library" has a skeleton index at Grand Comic Database of over 280 issues!! Impressive. This one isn't listed there...yet. While GCD notes the publisher as "Frew Publications", we'll see yet again a series of printers/distributors/etc listed on the inside covers.
Gordon & Gotch Ltd.
Rotary Colorprint Co. and Frew Publications Pty.
Yeah, yeah... let's look at the interiors!!
"Rough Road to Happiness" by Dana Dutch and Matt Baker, originally printed in True Love Pictorial #4 (June 1953). What is interesting to me on several of these interior stories is that the original printed page was not cut-up and reformatted (as is "typical" for Aus Digests), but rather reduced to fit into the smaller margin. The print quality on this interior Baker story is quite nice and clean. I enjoyed it so much that I took a second photo:
The next Baker story inside is "Weekend Paradise", originally printed in Teen-age Romances #23 (August 1952). Yet another full page reduced printing with clean print strike.
And the final Matt Baker illustrated section is "They Said I Was a B I". Looking at GCD's data, it is clearly a St John story originally titled, "They Said I was a Bad Influence", but the problem then becomes which TSIWABD story is it? St John appears to have two. One at 14 pages and one at 7. The 7 page story-characters appear in this one (Sharon, Maxine, etc), but the 14 page story has no character data to compare with. Is it the same story? Hmmmmm.... I think I get it now.... The original 14 page story is first printed in those insanely rare "pocket comics" (which I have no copies of ), and was likely reformatted to the 7 pages for the larger comic size. Therefore, the original publishing was Teen-age Diary Secrets #7 (November 1949).
I'm going to assume that because this story was resized multiple times by the original publisher that it suffers the dull quality of reprinting and reprinting from a reprint. Clearly the linework is not as crisp as we'd like to see. And the elephant in the room; what's the deal with those Australian censors??? Why would they choose not to print "Bad Influence"?
Here's another spread from this story so that I can share my misery of the terrible quality.
The cover swipe is from this story:
And I also will share this nice Ric Estrada page (I like a lot of his work):
Here's my scale photo (yes, did I mention it's a digest?):
There are no advertisements at all. Back cover completes the last story.
Overall a very clean copy of this issue. No significant problems to reduce the grade into anything "low". I'm giving it a 5.5.
