  1. This is really a silver age question but since I have been on a mad scientist kick, I wondered whether this guy on the cover resembled Stan Lee and was it a comment by Burgos, who probably was frustrated that his character was controlled by Stan? How many different ways could they be sued on this one?
  2. Here are a couple of two legged girls and a shark attack.
  3. Last month I bought quite a few issues of Alter Ego that were on sale from the publisher for half price. I wish now that I'd also purchased the issue that profiled Powell. I might have an extra copy since Roy sent me one. I sent in several scans that I made and one that I found on line which was made by Ben Samuels I think. I like his horror stories for Harvey. They took great advantage of his art and did some coloring which made it look even better. Fun stuff to read and see. bb
  4. Nice looking copies Jv. I haven't found any in a long time. bb
  5. Great art from Powell on this story but I wonder about the title... bb
  6. Need a cover for Captain America 13 (But I changed the scans below to add a little variety). I could also use the cover to Marvel Mystery 30 which had a similar theme. Hangman 2 and Jackpot 2, Top-Notch 11 and 12 Add Batman 8 to the need covers group and Mystery in Space 2 to the need coverless copy group. I have two Blue Ribbon issues (16 and 18?) that need a cover and one that needs a centerfol. I have a Batman 36 that needs a centerfold. Also need a cover for Batman 19 but a good scan would do for now.
  7. I always wondered what happen to the original Ghost Rider.
  8. Such a cool cover! So your just starting on pulps? You sure went at it gun-ho! One of my favorites. Did anyone find a "girl in a tube" cover that predated the one that BZ found?
  9. I have seen that cover a lot. Purchased from Wally at the outdoor flea market. This one always amazes me. Love the colors but wonder about the thinking that went behind it. Sorry about posting again but not everyone has seen it. bb
  10. Since that one has some writing on the cover and my name in the corner, maybe you should send it to me. Nice cover BZ. Another test tube threat. Looks like a positive Benedict's test for glucose but maybe I have been teaching too many labs lately.
  11. I watched Popeye cartoons on CKLW from Windsor. Captain Jolly was the host and he was played by Toby David who was a local disk jockey. Fun to watch at the time. Especially liked the Alladin cartoon and Sinbad. Capt. was later replaced by Poopdeck Paul. bb David, who died at age 80 in 1994, started in New York radio in the 1930s. He had parts in several NBC radio shows including Bob Hope, Garry Moore, Jackie Gleason and the children's show "Let's Pretend." He came to Detroit in 1940s, where his radio work included reading Detroit Times comics on the air. From the Detroit News Feb 27, 2000
  12. ALL FANTASTIC! Overdue to visit the Four Color thread? Do you have series 1 #25 to confirm that the first Jeep page is reprinted there? Jack I think you have Barks on your mind. Should be 127. I have the Popeye with the space ship and FC 113 and a GK giant size, and the Jeep issue but nothing else other than some odds and ends.
  13. To answer my own question, Segar was ill for a couple of years before his death and was ghosted by Doc Winner in 1937 and 1938. This was before BZ. I suspect Doc had a hand in helping at early times too, but the Jeep should be a creation of Segar. Any other thoughts? bb Reference Popeye by Fred Grandinetti
  14. Strip is August 9, 1936 Four Color Series 1 #25 reprints Thimble Theatre 1935 - 1937, so it's almost certainly in there. It's not in any of the series 2 books, as far as I know. JPS I think you are right about the issue number but I would like a confirmation. 1936 would make it a Segar original wouldn't it or did BZ do some earlier ghosting?
  15. CW, That was interesting. A recreation can be almost an exact copy but an original drawing would probably have some changes. You are probably right that it is not original but did Bud do the original or BZ? bb
  16. I found an image of the cover online. Looks like I just missed a copy on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/CLICK-Jan-1939-Rudolph-Diesel-Alfred-Lowrie-Popeye_W0QQitemZ400061654769QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090714?IMSfp=TL090714183003r9886#ht_500wt_1128 That is the issue but I think my copy is in better shape. Some of the Click issues that I have are a little fragile but this one should survive a little longer. I still haven't identified the Four Color issue that has the origin of the Jeep story.
  17. Frazetta did more romance than I realized a few years ago. Here are a few more splashes that are out there on the internet. From Personal Love 25-27 And an extra page that was posted previously. I think the color improved in later issues. I touched up errors by the printer in the first three. From Personal Love 32
  18. I think the cover is a picture of Madame Chiang Kai-shek in a colorful costume. Sorry I didn't scan it before I put it away. I will look for it again. There is also a picture of Arno in that issue in an article about pugilistic men-about-town. Apparently cartoonist had a more rowdy life back in the old days.
  19. I really liked those old Green Lantern stories. I think the character connects the Lensmen and the Jedi in pop culture. And has some connection with the Texas Rangers. Fun stuff and loved the Gil Kane Alien Lantern characters. bb
  20. I think I mentioned on this thread a long time ago, in a galaxy far away, that I had an article on Segar which was published after his death in 1938. While moving my heap of junk from NY back to PA, I found the Click Jan 1939 issue which contained the article. Here are a couple of scans. Unfortunately, Click is oversize and the scans are cut off but I tried to center them as much as possible without making too much fuss. Whether I remember correctly or not, I am sure fans of BZ's thread would be interested in the old article.
  21. It's a wonderful book! It is a wonderful looking book. What kind of treats are inside? bb
  22. It looks like they are wearing proper eye protection and gloves. At least it is safe for the scientists but not sure about the up-side-down green girl.
  23. There are a lot of great stories in the pulps. I like Kuttner and Vance. Eando Binder (brothers I think) wrote some good Adam Link stories. Otis Kline wrote ERB like stuff and some people say it was better. I used to get a lot of anthologies from the Sci Fi book club that consisted of pulp reprints but the paper was new and held together nicely for the past 30 years. You can find those books for little money at the bookstores. Asimov was published in the pulps and Zena Henderson too. Go out and read a bunch. They are better than Kellerman and Cornwall murder mysteries and more creative than Agatha Cristie. In my opinion rantrantbb
  24. I have shown this before but it is the only skeleton issue that I could find in my scans. Just wanted to join the party.
