  2. Allen Ulmer did some nice work on the Blue Beetle. He also did this nice Ragman splash. I used to work in a biohazard lab but never got to wear a mask as neat as this one. bb
  3. Maybe you can track down the party responsible for this mess! So many unfamiliar (to me) names on that list for Holyoke 1943. If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say very early Sol Brodsky. Or Saul Brodsky's little brother -- in a big hurry so he wouldn't show up late for third grade. Jack Perhaps that was by Sid Lazurus, who did Ali Baba, with Altman. The contorted arm was probably by a different artist from Altman or Stoner. Stoner did those elongated poses and slightly goofy faces for the Bouncer and Phantasmo, as well as, Blue Beetle. I am still trying to figure out which cover or strip was done by Murphy Anderson. Maybe he can give us a hint. I asked him a while back about his first strip and I remember he mentioned a Milkman or farm ad and not Blue Beetle.
  4. I think that little signature at the bottom indicates that these are all covers by Ramona Patenaude
  5. And while I am on the subject, there were a few other well known black artists that did comics. Matt Baker, of course, and A. C. Hollingsworth are better known than Stoner but they also seemed to have been key targets for Wertham. 6. Stoner's art and his background reminds me of Pippin's. Horace Pippin started painting after serving in WWI and losing an arm. His style was considered surrealistic. Or ethnic American folk art. I have a copy of one of his paintings over the fireplace where I live in Orange County. Strangely enough, Horace grew up in Orange County and moved to West Chester, PA, where I lived for over 20 years. I didn't hear as much about him as I did Andrew Wyeth. There are still a lot of red fox in Orange County but they no longer have segregated schools. bb
  7. E. C. Stoner was an African-American artist, who attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and was the protege of philantropist F. M. Kirby. Stoner did poster art during World War I and was art director at Tower Magazines in the 1930s. During the War he was commissioned to do portraits of the first black colonels in the US army. He worked as a comic book artist through the Binder, Chesler and Iger Studios from the late 1930s throughout the 1940s. He drew the first story of National's 'Speed Saunders' and was present in Dell titles like The Funnies with features like 'Martan the Marvel Man', 'Phantasmo', 'Night Devils and 'Convoy'. He drew 'Blackstone' for EC Comics, 'Captain Marvel', 'Lance O'Casey' and 'Spy Smasher' for Fawcett, 'Blue Beetle' and 'Bouncer' for Fox, 'Breeze Barton' and 'Flexo' for Timely, 'Doc Savage' and 'Iron Munro' for Street & Smits, as well as 'Mr. Ree' for Rural Home. In 1951, he illustrated the syndicated feature 'Rick Kane, Space Marshall'. From http://lambiek.net/artists/s/stoner_ec.htm
  8. STONER, ELMER CECIL [1897-1969] (artist) African-American ECS Not my favorite artist but one of a few black artist to work on Golden Age comics. He drew this splash and it looks like he did the cover for BB 32. He is also credited with creating Mr. Peanut. Mr. P is a big collectible item in case you didn't know.

  10. I noticed Allen Ulmer was given credit for this Blue Beetle art but it looks like Quinlan to me. Anyone else think so? There were a lot of Blue Beetle artists and it is easy to be confused. bb This one was a little more obvious. Ramona did this cover cause it is signed at the bottom.
  11. I certainly agree BB.That was the hardest part of sending it off to CGC. I think these scans are from issue 20 but I haven't checked.
  12. I am amazed that the highest is only a 6.0. It really suggests that the book is rare. My copy would be a lower grade. But I am happy to have it thanks to Tom Gordon III. The interior art and stories are also very good. It looks better due to some neat trimming in photoshop.
  13. I posted this on another thread but it is related to a theme that BZ initiated, comics in the comics. C-M is doing the Continental.
  14. Here's one by Sparky. His comment was made at about the time that censorship started but I don't think it was intended to be harmful to the industry.
  15. here are a couple more scans that i saved
  16. I've always had a fondness for Adventures as well. If I had money to burn I would collect 40 - the end. I think Burnley could have drawn anything and made it look good. His Superman was pretty good too.
  17. Totally awesome imagery. I recently picked up an original Classic Comics earlier this year which I posted here. Classic Comics 11 I used to read these as a kid and had forgotten how much fun they were. I really wanted to start picking up some of the originals and when I saw that Red Melvin (our good Dentist!) had one for sale I picked it up on the cheap. I want to pick up some others like Frankenstein and possibly Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer. Last of the Mohicans looks like a good one too and I do need to read it as I could never get through that book my Sophmore year of high school. I remember things taking a turn for the weird that year as I started to read Lovecraft instead! I like the Frankenstein cover. bb and the Last of the Mohicans. There we go! I love the line drawing covers on these early books. What I really love was their free form logos on the very early numbers before they got more consistent with the Classic Comics logo at the top of the books. Also, look at the last "S" in COMICS in the logo, looks like the artist was is a rush to finsh as it looks a little off compared to the rest of the letterforms! Probably a rush job. I put another Classic in the above comments which seemed appropriate. The art is not as good as some other issues but it tells the story and has an old time look about it.
  18. Is that a Xela cover? I like this one. And they are easy on the pocket book if you can find one.

  20. I found this scan amusing. "Sleepy Yollo the Bedless Norseman" story is from Jingle Jangle. scan from GA.UK
  21. Please excuse my frequent motorcycle photos but I live in Orange County where they make the Choppers. Here is one that was shown recently in another thread. This is the De Carlo special made from a WWII Harley and used by a policeman.
  22. Tony Blum = Alex Anthony Blum = better known as Alex Blum in Classics Illustrated, right? Toni Blum = Audrey Blum Bossert = Alex's daughter. She was a writer, not an artist, though. They showed up in the roman à clef Eisner story, The Dreamer, that I read recently. Jack Oops, I think that was supposed to be Toni Blum was the writer (related to Alex) and Al Bryant was the artist. I hope I got it right this time. Uh oh! I see John Celardo is also listed as worked on Zero for Quality. I'll stick with Bryant but there are a few other possibilities. bb
  23. I don't know much about this character either. Who did the art? The first panel is terrific. bb Who's Who says it was by Tony Blum. He did a lot of nice work for Quality and Eisner.
