  1. I assume you are describing Wolverton's feathering technique which he put everywhere. I always thought that it made his art look like a wood cutting. Not a nice thing to say but funny, thanks for the description.
  2. I am not a big Fletcher Hanks fan but you have to enjoy the simple plots that he came up with. It seems like the villians were really bad and the hero was really good. And a quick flash of the hand took care of the villian's head that rolled down the stairs. eg
  3. I love that record. It reminds me of the old Vogue Picture Records. Those old records are wonderful collectors items. I don't know how many exist but there seems to be an infinite variety. I can justify purchasing the Superman record because it comes with a story book. bb
  4. I can't remember... Maybe I'll read it tonight Ok, now if you ever decide to sell...I call dibs on the USA #7 and the All-Select #2 It looks like it has a pretty good Submariner story with a dragon too. Fiche scans are not as nice as the original but all that I have unfortunately.
  5. Gary Groth interviewed Pierce Rice. Great interview. Thanks! I am having trouble spelling some of the names. That should be Arturo Cazeneuve I think. He worked with Pierce Rice on several projects. I didn't see mention of his work in Leading but I think it is correct.
  6. Red Rogue looks like the artwork of Charles Voight. I don't know about The Gladiator. According to JVJ, the Gladiator art was by Pierce Rice and Arthur Cazaneuve. They worked on Seven Soldiers stories for Leading if I remember correctly. bb
  7. I also picked up this Fox Giant 37 (I think) at the Allentown paper show. I was hoping for the Cattle Kate story but found Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde instead. Also has Hoot Gibson with Wood art, Iwo Jima and Pedro.
  8. I always wanted the Magic Ring or the Flying Train. They come with a colorful book and two nifty records. bb
  9. Love the Karloff by Moldoff. It is fun to just say the names.
  10. I could agree that this looks like Baker art and the previous issue that I commented on. But the rest don't look like Bakerwork. I think this disagrees with the list by Alberto and Jim. They thought the Wedding Bells issues had art by Baker. I think you already mentioned that heavy handed inking can obscure Baker's art. As it did in Igor's shop (I found that funny but an appropriate name). bb
  11. Red Rogue looks like the artwork of Charles Voight. Way to go BZ! I don't know about The Gladiator. I will wait until Sunday to post the other one, in case someone else wants to guess. I am suprised at how many times Charles Voight art has turned up since you posted the Jeep story. bb
  12. It is a Baker cover. Most of his covers outside of St. John, the details got lost in the inks done by others. It's difficult to recognize quite a few of them. I could go with Baker based on the guys in the background but the girl up front looks less like his style. Was this listed in the article in AE on Baker? bb
  13. I have noticed more violence on TV these days (Mutant Chronicals?). There is always someone pummeling somebody in a sport that I never heard of. They had some interesting ideas in the golden age which added a little more excitement to sports or games that tend to be a little less violent than kickboxing and sword play. Quiz Opportunity??? Does anyone know who did the art on these two strips? I think I know the RR but JVJ provided the answer to the Gladiator art.
  14. Did you Photoshop that or was that Rosetta Stone actually printed in a comic? That seemed pretty easy. I guess I don't need my decoder for some things. What about this one?
  15. The JJSA decoder works by rotating the wheel for each member. Secrets are on the back. It works like the ROA and Capt. Midnight decoders that I have but isn't made of metal. bb
  16. Atom's code is a Caesar Cipher. Cracking by hand I get: The Earth is invaded by underground people Good job Darren! The original decoder was filled with Greek letters but I guess it isn't anymore complicated. Below is an advertisement for the JJSA, a decoder set for "Wonder Woman" and a message from Wonder Woman 9. Decoder is from the DC Vault, WW scan picked up on line. Decoder was apparently owned by Billy Zeel from Beaverton, MI.
  17. Kinda familiar. (Yes, a classic image and maybe not a swipe at all.) Which came first? All of those CSI candidates look similar.
  18. Apparently he was one of those poor university scientists who turned to crime to increase his income.... Lord, how I've tried. Thanks for the liquid He (from a test tube) panel. Jack I am sure that was a cylindrical Dewar flask (but I doubt that it would have held liquid helium for long) and he was wearing safety gloves and googles under his mask.
  19. I never heard of that character. Apparently he was one of those poor university scientists who turned to crime to increase his income. Here are a few extra pages of All Star 50 that I found on the internet. Unfortunately my decoder only works on the messages with Greek letters. And they added a little Frazetta at the end.
  20. and a similar ad for a book I almost purchased but thought it was too beat up. I am not as picky these days.
  21. And this is a fake All Star ad that I created for Roy. It was a joke.
  22. This was probably the last full page ad for All Star. bb
  23. Which Diary Secrets are you missing? Nice Baker covers by the way. I am sure these will all be reprinted soon. You don't really need originals cluttering up the house. bb
  24. Shock Gibson had some neat art work but I think this idea was also used in Clue comics. You could also get a nifty Live Wire badge. Good thing they put the swastika on the dragon, otherwise we wouldn't have known it was the bad guy. bb scans from GA.UK
  25. I have a couple of coverless comics with Rocketman stories. Can you identify this issue?
