  1. Frank Motler sent a scan of the Winking Buddha pocket book to the GCD chat group and I attached a scan from the APC 25 story. Apparently the art was redrawn but some panels were used. A similar fix up job may have been done to some of Baker's work that was to be used in the Western pocket books. Anyone have those Baker pocket books?
  2. I think we mentioned one of those books in the Sheena thread. I never read the story but I enjoyed the movie. Ms. Andress would have been easy to obey. bb
  3. Back in the day, if you got a subscription to WDCS then you also got a premium. It was sometimes a book and sometimes a picture. I think Walt Kelly did this one. My copy was a little beat up. I hope the repairs didn't harm it. bb
  4. Ruben Moreira was also given the credit for this Dynamic Man story. Dr. Gore the Biochemist (it says so on his sign) invented the Tangerine Death formula. I think it was a chemical and not a microbe but it was sweet smelling like a Lysol formulation. Just trying to tie together what seemed like two unrelated threads. bb
  5. According to the Who's Who, Rubimor did some work on Mr. E. I don't know if he did this story but it doesn't look like Tuska who was the other artist working on the feature. For some reason, the GCD no longer lists Dynamic comics about #20. I doubt if I am the only one to have a higher issue since Gerber also has pictures of the covers. But I digress, Mr. E was also done by Ruben and I wonder if this is one of the stories that he did? bb
  6. I love that cover. I wonder what the sales figures were for these magazines. Thanks seank. bb
  7. There were a lot more stories based on microbes, large and small, and many public service messages from different Super guys and dolls. R. Crumb tried a new approach to public service with his Tommy the Toilet. I skipped the message but you get the idea.
  8. BZ, OK, Outer Limits is over. I return your thread to you. bb
  9. And no one expects an attack from a giant paramecium. That will make you spill your Starbucks.
  10. Wolverton presented us with the Green Plague which I thought might be a combination of something like Hepatitis and pertussis. But his malady was more creative than that.
  11. Wonder Woman joined the fight. She did this public service announcement in Miss Beverly Hills. Good nutrition and cleaniness helps prevent disease. But the microbes got back at her in the silver age. WW 125 scan from the GCD. Sorry for the silver age post.
  12. After the war All-American civic-minded messages at the bottom of the cover page switched from "Keep 'em Flying!" to "Fight Infantile Paralysis!"
  13. Your friendly microbiologist was there to help with new medicines. Unfortunately they weren't effective against viruses but probably helpful in preventing a large number of deaths from secondary infections after influenza which devestated the world after World War I.
  14. There were other microbial villians in the real world. A story from Marvel Tales put the fear of infectious diseases into young minds.
  15. Superman joined in the fight. And even Captain Marvel was recruited to help.
  16. Mr. E joined in the fight against criminals that took advantage of the sick. bb
  17. A story about Sister Kenny's method for rehabilitation of victims of polio was published in Wonder Woman 8. Perhaps the story was a little more optimistic than it should have been, but rehabilitation after injury or disease has become an important part of patient recovery.
  18. I've never read the novel but I remember hearing an audio adaptation of the story when I was in junior high school. I assume it was a recording of the 1950 broadcast that was aired on the CBS radio program Escape. I still remember it. Link People should remember that during the time this was broadcast, there was an epidemic of polio. Infected children were being kept alive in iron lungs and even the president of the United States was a victim. Vaccination with either the live or the dead poliovirus vaccine has nearly eradicated the disease. Unfortunately, the search for an AIDs vaccine has not been as successful. I wanted to write and article for Alter Ego about comic stories which involved the microbial world but I don't think Roy was interested. bb (former Virologist) There was a response by comic book publishers in support of the campaign against polio. From Sensation 3 and Marvel Tales 118
  19. Nice selection! So... which ones are for sale? Is this a sales thread? But I can help a little. This recreation was available from Acerno. Send a PM and I will forward his email address. bb

  21. My wife liked romance comics when she was young. I knew a couple of other girls that liked Spooky and Lulu. A little Baker original art that was on sale at Comiclink. I glued the two together and removed a stain with Photoshop. I hope it looks a little better. bb
  22. Hey Sky Pink Blue, Are you related to Dr. V? It would be strange to have more than one dentist in the area that collects golden age comics. bb
  23. I would like to get a few more Baker covers too. I think the Cinderella love would be nice to have and I could use that Teen Age Romance in the top row. I could probably afford another Phantom Lady if I sold some of the issues that I have. bb Maybe there is another rare Canadian issue with a cover like this. I have only seen one based on All Top 8 posted on another thread. Not like this one but still it seemed to be real. This isn't.
  24. I like Airboy and Air Fighter, especially with the Black Angel.
  25. A lot of strips and a few covers published by Fiction House were attributed to Rubimor in the Fiction House Guide. I thought these three reminded me of some of the Tarzan work.
