  3. Thanks for sharing something special!!! Is that one you got when Barks was first taking orders? I used to collect nothing but Disney comics but failed to get a Barks' painting or even a litho. However, I do have a few scans. Your Barks' painting looks great. Here are a few other paintings that he made. and everyone really appreciates your sharing your collection of comics and pulps.   4. Very impressive Bang the colors on these pulps are so unfaded and striking! The only Thrilling I have is Thrilling Detective. This guy is having a bad day. bb Do you have some of these New Story issues. Pretty good art on the cover. The Brandywine Museum outside of Philadelphia has a large collection of art from children's books by Wyeth and others.   6. Very clever, BB. What story is that panel from? That panel is from Uncle Scrooge 5 where they dive to Atlantis to retrieve a bag of quarters from the Jukebox, i.e., "Secret of Atlantis". bb and the pie fight was a wonderful confection. bb
  7. Rosa may have written the story you describe, but it was (as usual) Barks who first used that angle. In a story that I believe originally appeared in one of the first 25 or so issues of Uncle Scrooge, Scrooge decides to make a random 1916 quarter incredibly valuable by acquiring ALL the 1916 quarters that were made, and dumping them in the ocean... then he loses the single on that he'd set aside, and has to go down to an Atlantis-like world to retrieve another of the quarters...at the end, he takes the one salvaged quarter to a coin shop, and the dealer gasps and says "why, this coin is so rare and valuable, only one person in the world could afford to buy it - Scrooge McDuck!" That's fairly interesting...because 1916 Standing Liberty quarters are one of the classic rarities of 20th century US silver coinage...an example in even the worst condition is worth $3-$4K. An MS65 (comparable to a 9.8) could sell for $100K with a full head. I enjoyed this story very much. I liked the whales almost as much as the pie fight. bb

  10. This would be kind of fun to own. A portrait of Carl Barks by Al Hirschfeld is a unique item. The Hirschfeld theater in NYC has several of these portraits of actors on the walls. It would be nice to have a portrait honoring a cartoonist. bb From the Heritage catalog and I probably will be outbid anyway.
  11. I found a scan of a beat up copy of Dark Mysteries 13 and thought it needed a little cleaning up. It also needed a little color added. Doesn't it make more sense this way? bb

  13. The Futuro story is great, the Lost City story is awesome (I don't think it is reprinted in the Anti-Hitler comic) and the back cover is about as good as they come. It's been covered before, but the back cover refers to William "Stage" Boyd not Hopalong Cassidy . That's very interesting. I had noticed the unfamiliar nickname but never investigated why it was being used. Here is William "Stage" Boyd's bio from Wikepedia: (December 28, 1889, New York, USA - March 20, 1935, Los Angeles, USA) William H. Boyd was an early 20th century stage actor who appeared in two Broadway plays and then worked in motion pictures. To avoid later confusion with a better-known performer working under the same name, William Boyd (best known for playing Hopalong Cassidy), Boyd began using the name William "Stage" Boyd to emphasize his experience on the legitimate stage (such experience was considered an advantage to an actor after the introduction of talking pictures). Boyd's arrests for alcohol possession (during prohibition) and drug possession damaged his career and that of the "other" William Boyd. Many newspapers reported the arrests, but published photos of the wrong William Boyd, who lost his studio contract with RKO. Boyd's first wife, Margaret Christiansen, later married theatrical producer Harry Frazee, one time owner of the Boston Red Sox, best remembered for selling Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. I don't think I have ever seen "The Lost City". Some of those old movies show up on Ted Turner's network and I try to watch them when they do. I saw one of the superhero serials on TCM on Saturday afternoons but I guess they stopped that. I did see parts of the Phantom Empire a while back. It was an early funky sci fi western with Gene Autry. I was a big Hopalong fan as a kid. I watched the show and had the guns and hat. But I never had the bicycle. He was the master of merchandising. He seems kind of scary when I see him today. He had a funny laugh and was too well dressed to be a cowboy. bb
  14. Blackhawk likes balloons too, but he could have used a parachute for that jump. And Jules Verne envisioned something like a Zeppelin for one or two of his stories. Scans from the GCD. bb
  15. I remember a Balloon Buster but no Zeppelin Zapper.
  16. I don't recall any other Zeppelins that haven't been shown but I do have a scan of Wolverton's Space Hawk vs. the Zeppelin. bb The writer says dirigible which would be incorrect since the ship as drawn by Wolverton had an internal skeleton.

  18. Zepplin is from Wings 36. And I don't believe it is historical. Zuper Zepplins like Super Planes were not part of WWII. Although I did see a German plane with 12 engines I think. 6 forward and 6 reverse. What a monster. bb

  22. Don't have the comic but I do notice that the story is told by Daws Butler who later went on to become the voice of Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Snagglepuss, Captain Crunch and many others. In junior high out in California, I took an animation class and he came in and gave a workshop on that aspect of the cartoon industry. He was second only to Mel Blanc in influence in the voice-acting field. Thanks Flee. I didn't know he was the voice of Yogi. Did he do Boo Boo too?   25. Those disks from Jerry Bails sound great. Do any of them contain scans of The Comic Reader or early Rocket's Blast issues? I'm listed in the Who's Who in Comic Fandom, too. I seem to recall it was in the, we're not sure if these people are still active section. There are quite a few names in the "Lost to Fandom?" list. Obviously, you weren't lost, just hiding. I thought On the Drawing Board was on the disk but I couldn't find it. The Comic Reader would only be on the disks if it was prepared by Jerry. The Rocket's Blast was GB Love's work and not on the disk. I have a lot of both of those titles but they are fading. bb
