  1. Billy- i thought i would help by showing you what they look like Is this the story from Surefire 3a?
  2. Alex also did this party illo with bare chests although it isn't as obvious. And no one seems to suffering. bb
  3. GCD is back up today. They say the artist is C. A. Winter. I'm not familiar with his work but I see from the Jerry Bails Index and GCD that he did work for quite a few publishers during the Golden Age. I think the artist for that story in Top Notch 6 was listed as William Wills. He also did Kayo Kirby. The art in the other issues was supposedly by Wills but doesn't look as clean. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of other information to confirm this but the art is similar on some of the Kayo Kirby stories. Credits are a little confusing for Fiction House. bb
  4. Very cool clipping. I had no idea that the Detroit Triple Fan Fair started that early. I'm glad I bumped into this. I do part-time security at Ford Field. I told my partner that I collect comics and he started telling me how he used to collect comics. He told me about a guy named Eugene Seger and the huge collection he had. I had never heard of him, so this is pleasant coincidence. Also, a local collector has an original poster advertising the first Detroit Triple Fan Fare. I missed a show where he was displaying it. I've been bugging him to let me take a photo of it. Maggie has recently reported that Shel is very ill... Sorry to hear about Shel. Didn't his efforts on the Triple Fan Fair lead to the San Diego convention? The NYC convention arranged by Dave Kaler took place that same summer but a month later. And a few more fanzines. Comic World 5 edited by Robert Jennings with a cover by Raymond Miller. RBCC 40 edited by G.B. Love with a terrific cover by Biljo White. Masquerader 2 edited by Mike Vosburg with a cover by Mike Vosburg.
  5. Here are three pretty good issue 4 fanzines. Aurora 4 edited by Len Wein cover by Jack Kirby Slam-Bang 4 edited by Richard Weingroff Rocket's Blast Special 4 edited by G.B. Love with a cover by Howard Keltner and the article is by Raymond Miller. Len Wein turned pro. And so did Michael Vosburg who edited Masquerader 6 which has a cover by Ron Foss. And Alter Ego 2 was edited by Jerry Bails and Roy Thomas with a cover by Roy.
  6. It looks like you found your clue in French. I could never learn enough French to do anything other than say good morning and I was told I didn't say Bon Jour cheerfully enough. Fortunately I could use English in most of the Belgium cities other than Namur. And I used Babel Fish to translate all of the scientific papers which shared a lot of common terms. bb
  7. I have a big box of fanzines from the sixties and a CD that Jerry Bails sent me, which has scans of his fanzines. I keep searching for relevant things or just neat stuff that I can post. They should probably be scanned before the ink fades from some of those old copies. Don't forget Don and Maggie Thompson. They put together a pretty good zine and contributed to others. Biljo White and Raymond Miller were also big contributers. As you said too many to list. bb
  8. Streak Chandler on Mars. (Thank you, Google.) I am suprised that you could find the strip on google since it only lasted 3 or 4 issues. I thought you might at least need his name. The art on this strip was pretty good. My guess is that it was by Camy. Since the GCD was down today, I can't check. It could also be by Meskin but I think that is less likely. bb
  9. Does anyone recognize this character? I have another hint if this isn't enough. I was kind of fascinated with the scientific description of the crystal. Huh? bb
  10. I posted this on the Ho, Ho, Ho! thread but it seems to have lost energy. So here it is again. bb
  11. I found this newspaper article in one of my cigar boxes with odds and ends. I think I cut it out of the Monroe Evening News during the spring of 1965. It is just a bit of history for the old collectors in the group.
  12. Great splash, BB. Do you have a scan of the cover? I have a scan from ga.uk. Note the Fawcette signature. bb Blaisdell used those ants too.
  13. Here is one of my Lurking Fears. This is the shelf where it normally nests. I also collect holiday candles manufactured by the Gurley Novelty Company in the 1950's and early 60's. Eleven copies of Georgia Boy published by Avon!!! You have a lot of paperbacks (how many?). Do you have a warehouse? I knew a guy who collected paper and he had several sheds built to hold his collection and there was no room in his house except a narrow path to walk in. He lived in NJ but I haven't heard from him in a while. Perhaps you should contact Shiverbones about the Halloween cards. He is making new ones which are instant collector's items. bb
  14. I thought this splash was pretty good even though it isn't the same as the Avon cover. Those pb are in pretty good condtion by the way. bb
  15. I noticed the story was in an IW reprint of Space Detective, which I don't have anymore (and forgotten completely). I think Barney was overshadowed by the Avon character that was drawn by Wood. I am guessing that Fawcette did the FF cover. He did several nice science fiction covers of that time and Flash Gordon for King comics if I remember correctly. bb
  16. BZ, I couldn't find the cover in the Gerber guide and I didn't recognize the character when you added him in the last clue. But I knew that Famous Funnies had some additional Sci Fi covers that weren't in Gerber so Iooked at the GCD files. Sounds simple but I checked several other titles first. It was tough for me. Do you know who did the art and how long the character lasted? bb
  17. Great collection of stuff at your flickr page. You are a very talented artist. bb
  18. Flee started this one for me last year. I added to it and hope that Lulu expresses our wish that everyone has a Merry Christmas. bb
  19. I'll bite - where from Frankenblondie is also from Black Cat 39. bb
  20. I don't have any German books except photos of the Rhineland taken from a Zepplin. And my "ubersetzen" isn't what it used to be. But I have another cartoon from Punch that represents someone's idea about the viewpoint of German leadership before WWII. This reminded me of Schomburg's covers. Bernard Partridge did excellant work.
  21. I think this is probably a reprint of the first version from 1939. I also have the Columbia 78 rpm record by Gene but no jacket. bb And I still have Christmas Spirit!
  22. From the Punch Almanac of 1939. These cartoons remind me of a WWII movie that I saw and one of the coldest days of my life. Riding to work in the winter time was too darn cold. But riding home for Xmas would have been worth it. Royal Enfield was a popular English motorcycle during the War. This next cartoon applies as well today as it did in 1939.
  23. Everyone on this thread knows about the gruesome cover on Black Cat 50 but I never knew about the Frazetta story on the inside. GCD says just inks but it looks a lot like his work. Palais art can be found in most of those issues too. I think I need to collect more Harvey comics. Does anyone want to trade for Blondie? Palais splash from BC 39.
