  1. Great looking programs BZ. I only have one program in my collection. Someone sold me a box of comics with Barks Fanzines and a 1980s San Diego Con program. I enjoyed all of the illos and the quality production of the programs and later fanzines. I still enjoy digging through all of the old fanzines and probably have a few that Bill Schelly hasn't written about. bb
  2. That was pretty fast Scrooge. I guess you must have remembered that cover. It does look like something that should be on an Adventure comic. I spent my time making new Baker covers. This is what the Weird Adventures 1 cover should have looked like. I am not sure whether they censored the story in other ways. But some of the panels (including this splash) showed the She-Wolf with a T-shirt under her blouse. After restoration, I think it would have made a good cover. I posted this on the romance thread too. I thought BZ might appreciate the orange cover creation. The Canadian comics often took an internal page or panel and turned it into a comic. I am wondering why they didn't use this one unless they were afraid of Seducing the Innocent. bb
  3. and the rest... The sequel, "Return of the She-Wolf", would have to be in the "Vault of Romantic Horrors". bb The unedited scans are from Goldenagecomics.UK.
  4. Perhaps you would like to read the rest of the story?
  5. or maybe it would be better with a little less lettering on the cover. bb Perhaps the title of the comic should be [font:Comic Sans MS]Weird Romance[/font]!
  6. And it would have made an awesome cover. bb
  7. At sometime the editors decided to censor Baker's art because it was a little too risque. Here is a restoration of his splash panel for She-Wolf in Weird Adventures 1. bb Scan is from the Canadian edition. I thought they might have put a tee-shirt on her because it is cold up there.
  8. I still like Kubert but I enjoy the work of many other artists (Anderson, Kirby, Quinlan, Wolverton, Crumb, Fine, Schomburg, Ditko, Barks, and etc.). I buy new items by Kubert occasionally. I enjoy the work of his sons too (Andy and Adam). I missed his lecture at one of the local universities in NJ a few months ago and was a little disappointed with myself. Speaking of other artists...I saw some work by Lou Fine at the Jewish Museum that made me appreciate his art a lot more (Wow). I would like some of the older Kubert stuff for my collection (early Hawkman or Viking Prince). I wouldn't sell the home for it but you can have my old car. Fan appreciation of Kubert's art was more vocal back in those days(1962-68). I was also fond of Buscema's art and Rosa's. I only have a few originals by those guys but enjoy them very much. bb He can draw a pretty good dragon.
  9. And Rocket's Blast 27. bb Well maybe Howard used one of these as a template for his cover but there is no exact match there. Perhaps he used an ad from another comic? Howard drew a lot of stories for the early comic fanzines. He seemed pretty friendly when I talked to him. I have found his index to be very useful. bb I found another Keltner cover in the box. The reproduction isn't as good as later issues but it was better than the old ditto machines. This issue also had my first full page ad. I wasn't much of a business man. No wonder Rogofsky got all of the comics. The ad was listed under the name of my business partner at the time. He went off to fight the war in the late sixties and I went off to college and war protests. We still occasionally call and seem to be friends. bb PS I don't remember owning some of those comics and the Prices Are No Longer Valid.
  10. This was a Heritage scan but I thought it deserved posting. I don't have enough DC scifi. bb
  11. And Rocket's Blast 27. bb The cover is by Howard Keltner. It is a rendition of a Web splash. I am not sure which issue. Anyone know? Pop Quiz? I think it looks like the cover of 27 without the japanese villain in the web and Steel Sterling and Blackjack standing off to the left side. Well maybe Howard used one of these as a template for his cover but there is no exact match there. Perhaps he used an ad from another comic? Howard drew a lot of stories for the early comic fanzines. He seemed pretty friendly when I talked to him. I have found his index to be very useful. bb
  12. Thanks BB. I wonder if any of the other Golden Age collectors from those earliest days of comic fandom are still around and have held on to their collections. Unlike all of us who followed in their footsteps, those guys originally bought their GA comics right off the newsstand. Those guys that bought their golden age collection off the newstand would have to be 80 to 90 years old. I suspect there are very few. But maybe another Larson or Mile High collection will show up. That Valley collection seemed rather large. I am like some of the other group. I bought my Spiderman 1 off the newstand (and sold it for next to nothing). And I was happy to read those books. We are the second generation and there is a third and fourth that is active. The first generation has to be disappearing like WWII verterans. But I thank them for their work and appreciate the fact that they were willing to share their knowledge and help bring the GA comics back to life. bb
  13. I don't know how many of the collectors are still around. Jerry Bails used to drop names of collectors that he was still in contact with. Howard Keltner mentioned that he had bought and sold enough comics to make his family rich if he had sold at todays prices. Raymond Miller was still putting ads in the CBG up to a few years ago. I suspect there are a few more like you, BZ, that have held on to what they found. Roy Thomas told me he had almost all of the Weird Tales. Geppi has an entire museum. Heritage often finds someone new that wants to sell his collection that he has had for forty years or so. Lots of dealers are really collectors and some are on the boards. Beerbohm has sold more high grade comics then I will ever see but I don't know if he collects anything. If I had only known the investment potential...I could have purchased more wisely. But it is a hobby and I purchased the old golden age as cheaply as possible and often in low grade when I found it. I wanted to have fun. It has been more fun than investing in the stock market. bb
  14. I think the photoshop edited version looks a little better than my faded copy. bb
  15. Unfortunately my copy of Komix Illustrated 4 is a little faded but it had one of Biljo's better efforts. It is so sixties with the astronaut and space capsule. bb
  16. I heard of Komix Illustrated but never bought an issue. It looks pretty good. Is it too late to subscribe? I like the Profiles on Collectors feature. I didn't realize Rogofsky was so young back then. Keltner was a visionary. I thought his indexing idea was a pipe dream and now it looks like it's a project that will actually be accomplished. A few of my favorite fan artists in the early days of fandom were Ronn Foss, Richard "Grass" Green, and Bill Dubay. If you have the time, could you please scan the profile of Rick Durell? He and Glen Johnson were a couple of the first fans I ever corresponded with. Here is Rick's profile from the early sixties. And Rocket's Blast 27. bb The cover is by Howard Keltner. It is a rendition of a Web splash. I am not sure which issue. Anyone know? Pop Quiz?
  17. BZ, I thought that cover looked familiar. I bought this book at the flea market at about the same time that you posted the Startling cover. There are lots of nice photos inside. bb
  18. I particularly enjoyed the work by Biljo White. His fanzine was hand lettered and he had good contributers like Ronn Foss, Tom Fagan and Richard Greene. I liked the profiles that he did. If you sent in a picture, he would do a sketch and write a short bio. bb
  19. Weird, That is a beautiful example of Wrightson art. I wish I had purchased some a long time ago. A lot of fanzine artists turned pro or should have. Some pros sent art for amateur publications too. bb
  20. Scrooge, I have always said that comics are a visual media. Lots of color, straight and curved lines. Fancy shading. I didn't need Speak and Spell technology to appreciate comics. Photoshop and a decent scanner were enough as long as my computer held up. I reloaded Windows XP recently to eliminate contaminated files. Hopefully I fixed more things than I broke. Now my new flat screen scanner with built in speakers seems to add more resolution and the ability to listen to Utube and my old radio shows. By the way, I have the Captain Marvel movie on tape. I will have to replace it some day with new HD or Blue Ray. But will someone color it first and fix the special effects. Tom Tyler is a great Captain Marvel cause he really was a Superman. Scans below are from Captain Marvel 18. bb
  21. I could use a cover for Superman 8, Hangman 8, Terrytoons 1 and Sure Fire 3a. Centerfolds are needed for Hangman 5, Action 40, Jackpot 9 and Blackhood 9. I have covers for Pep 33 and Marvel Mystery 36. I am also looking for the cover and first wrap of Detective 39. Send me a note if you have anything. I have two boxes of coverless comics and half of them are golden age. bb
  22. Richard Anderson and Don Glut's terrific movie and action serial fanzine, Shazam. bb PS It also has a three page article, i.e.,movie summary, on "The Wild One".
  23. Great covers BZ. I have seen a few Bolles' covers before but I only have a few issues of GP. However, I was searching through some of the boxes to test my scanner hook up and thought you might want to see a few more early fanzines. bb
  24. Pun? Orange Skies Jack Thanks for the music bit Jack. I had to reinstall Windows (I needed to clean up files anyway) to get my sound card to work again. I probably lost a few important favorite websites but hopefully no other damage. The comic files are on the external hard drive. It is nice to have but I think I might need a new comic Reader now. bb My link broke your computer? Some pal I am. Jack Jack, Your link didn't cause the damage. I haven't had sound on my computer since the original installation of Windows XP. I reinstalled in order to listen to the song. I celebrated the correction by also listening to my Shadow mp3 CD. bb
