  1. This is a great topic. Back in 2019, I paid $129 for the Dell Movie Classic, Doctor Who and the Daleks. I was real curious to read Doctor Who’s first comic book story. What a disappointment! Doctor Who was a background character as the story focused on the kids in the story.
  2. I had low expectations for this year’s comic con, but I thought it was really good from a buying perspective. I was able to get three golden age books at near their GPA (Batman 50, Weird Fantasy 22, and Phantom Stranger 2). An added bonus was that more dealers brought foreign editions to sell (a friend of mine was totally psyched - he left the con wishing he had more cash). I heard artist alley maintained it crowded reputation. I got there early Thursday morning when it wasn’t bad and was able to get an Adam Hughes head sketch. I was really happy with the books I was able to purchase. I don’t think I would have been able to even have the opportunity to buy them during the recent boom. On the entertainment side, there were no “must see” exhibits on the showroom floor. The panels involving actors were lame as they couldn’t discuss anything they worked on. I was happy to get the free variants from the Marvel Panels. the lack of Wi-Fi in the showroom made buying comics a challenge. Luckily I found a couple of pockets in Javitz where I could search the GPA values of books on my phone. overall , not the best NYCC, but I’m definitely glad I went.
  3. I finally watch the video. I take offense to his using a photo of High Grade Comics as an example of an overpriced dealer. At the last NYCC, Bob sold me a copy of OAAW 83 and couple of early Showcases at an attractive price. And that was the first time I ever met Bob. this sticky goose has lost credibility with me.
  4. I’d like to echo Bookery’s sentiments. Comic book dealers are professionals like any other. When you are consider the travel and the necessity to work weekends, their job is tougher than a lot of professions. Over years, I’m lucky to build up a friendship a comic dealer whose kind enough to call me first when he gets in some interesting GA (even though he has customers with bigger pockets). I always inform him of my ever changing want list, and he frames my expectations with what he sees in the marketplace. it’s a relationship like any other. - it takes time to cultivate and communicating what both sides need.
  5. I took my family to see Flash on the 4th of July. Between Discount Tuesday and accumulated AMC points, I paid $2 a ticket. We had a fun time watching it. I wouldn’t make a special trip to theater to see it. But, if you were going to the movies anyway, it’s not a bad choice. That being said, since it will be available for streaming (PPV) on July 18th, it might be tough to see it in the theaters as Mission Impossible will likely take most of its screens on Wednesday
  6. I saw this listing on eBay too. What is the story here? Is the seller a difficult one?
  7. I had no idea Wonder Woman was married to the Golden Age Flash
  8. Ugh!!! I have to work next Saturday, so I can only go to one of these shows. How do I choose?
  9. I had a similar issue, I got a great deal on a an auction. Since the seller was international, I needed him to send an invoice . After many requests, I got nothing. I reached out to EBay Customer Service because I didn’t want to get accused of nonpayment. And Lo a behold, an invoice came. I paid and got the comic. Perhaps eBay can shame a seller to sending you the item.
  10. Gosh, could you imagine the interest in this film if they had only titled it “Avatar: The Way of Whiskey?”
  11. To echo Justafan’s sentiment, last year I attended NYCC and Baltimore Comic Con. The only reason I went to Baltimore was because I didn’t spend all of my allowance at NYCC. It was my first time going to Baltimore Comic Con, and I was so glad I did! I picked up the first issue of Phantom Stranger 1 (GA series). A book that rarely show up. from a pure comic buying perspective, Baltimore beats NYCC hands down. I do like NYCC especially when video game companies come with there soon to be released game. But in a post-COVID world, I’m not sure if any video game company will return to NYCC
  12. It definitely appears that Warner Brothers Discovery is getting more dysfunctional. At this point, I’m half expecting them to give the DC Film & TV job to Dylan.
  13. Spidey is the king. To echo the sentiment expressed earlier by others, it would be tough for me to give up such a nice ASM 14.
  14. All this acetate business is making me feel old. I remember a time when the only thing wrapped in plastic was Laura Palmer.
  15. I’m sorry to hear he backed out. Especially since there is a chance of an X-men announcement during the MCU panel at San Diego Comic Con in a couple of weeks. The timing could have Ben perfect.
  16. Thank you so much, ConservativeOne! That’s the impression I got from their website. I’ll likely go to a Pirates game instead.
  17. Sadly, Love & Thunder was a disappointment for me. I felt too much of the humor was forced. Overall, with the exception of Bale, I felt every one else phoned it in. When I left the theater, I told my wife that Eternals might have been better. She replied, “No. This wasn’t that bad.” I can offer up that faint praise.
  18. I remember when I was 11 years old at a local comic show in Central Jersey overhearing a conversation between two dealers about Night Nurse #1. The first dealer asked the other, “why should I buy that from you? Give me three good reasons!” the second dealer replied, “It’s a marvel! It’s a first issue. And , and …” I laughed to myself “yeah, no one wants that.” 36 years later, I bought the complete series for $200. It turns out that second dealer was right after all.
  19. Both are awesome comics. I like the Ali book much better. But, I voted for Superman vs Spider-Man as a Marvel & DC crossover was unthinkable back then.
  20. I will happen to be in Pittsburgh area coincidentally on the same weekend as the Steel City Comic Con. I’m trying to figure out if this show is worth attending. Their website focuses on Celebrity guests, which isn’t my thing. I’m more interested in GA & SA comic dealers. Has anyone ever attended this show? If so, are there usually a good amount of GA/SA dealers? Any information and opinions about the show will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!
  21. Before I attend a big show, I come up with a top 10 want list. I look up the recent sales over the prior six months in order to get a realistic idea of how much I can expect to pay. When I walk the room, I’m strictly concentrated on the list. If I get two books off my list, I view it as a successful show. If I still have funds, I may shop “off list.” To be honest, when I attended the Big Apple Con in March, there were 20 books in my “top ten” list. Accordingly, I’m probably the worst person to give advice on this topic! 😂
  22. I’ve been to 5 or so Big Apple Cons, and last week’s show was the best I attended. It seemed all of the dealers had some Golden Age in their inventory, which is really nice to see. I ended up buying a couple of books I’ve had a hard time finding (eg Challengers of Unknown 3, Hughes’ Dirty Pair variant). I had a great time. I would have stayed longer but I ran out funds.
  23. Hi Everyone, Long Time Listener, first time caller. I think prices might be easing up a little. Yesterday, I went to the Big Apple Comic Con. There was a big overlap of vendors from the 2021 NYCC. Yesterday, The vendors were more willing to discount their stick price than they were in October. At both shows, I was focusing on early Silver Age books (e.g. Showcase and pre-FF marvels) which aren't very plentiful. I realized my anecdotal views are only based on two data points, but I felt a difference in the dealer rooms between the two shows.
  24. Hi! I’m a long time lurker, first time poster. Just wanted to say Hi! And that enjoy everyone’s insight on this message board. All the best, Antman’s Shorter Brother
