So many great story arcs. Issues #111-113, then the Savage Land, Hellfire Club, The Wendigo, Days of Futures Past and then it lost steam until JRJr took it over.
Don't forget the first appearance of Alpha Flight!
And while I wasn't a huge fan of the Proteus storyline, friends (along with the Artist Edition) have been able to convince me that those issues are the actual artistic peak of the run.

That was fun, looking forward to the next post auction review. The fact that there was virtually no final auction day activity on the X-Men # 137 piece did seem odd. I have no idea what the proper market values should be on any of these pieces because in the past 3-4 years everything has increased exponentially. I remember not too long when a great action page from issue #113 went for (at the time was a considered to be an aggressive price) $35Kish but now I’m sure it could fetch considerably more. Personally the Byrne Cap piece was my sentimental favourite and I didn’t think that the 137 was overly exciting (just my personal tastes). IMO they are many more desirable pages from Byrne’s run that gets my juices flowing.
Nobody asked, but I'll weigh in:
- Did ANY of the Byrne X-Men pages get live bids? Maybe the 2nd page got one? It seems like all three were "price discovered" before the auction. I don't think Rob posted any wins to Facebook. Could be a factor.
- I'd take the 137 cover over the 141 cover. 141 cover is better drawn, but doesn't give me chills the way 137 does.
- When I started collecting (early 2000s) here was a small mini-cabal of Byrne collectors who tried to convince the world that DoFP was equal or superior to the Dark Phoenix Saga... I never bought what they were selling.
- I LOVED the 137 page from this auction. Was 100% as good as it gets without being some key very specific A+ moment. (maybe this is why the DD181 went so high... no DD or Elektra, but very memorable scene)

As prices for Bolland finished artwork continues to climb beyond many collectors budgets, it’s only a matter of time before we see his prelim artwork cracking the $10K barrier constantly. I’m thinking about Killing Joke prelims in particular, but some of his other cover prelims aren’t that far off, IMHO
What's the story with his Killing Joke Prelims?
And by that I mean specifically, did Brian do multiple prelims per page for that story? (I've seen a bunch over the years each flushed out at very different levels of detail.) -

$16.8k - record for a Bolland Preliminary I imagine...this one went high in my mind...which Bolland WW cover is more marketable better - any from 63 - 100?
Don't know if it's more marketable, but I know a lot of people who would rather have #96

This one is very nice, and the published cover is iconic. I think Bolland was the best cover artist of the decade, but I am shocked that someone will be paying 10k+ (including tax) for a prelim.
Thoughts? Is his work so scarce that people will fight for whatever they can get?

I have to admit, I was skeptical about this show given the price and airfare/hotel required.... but it looks like it's shaping up pretty well.
I think East Coast in January was the way to go. Collectors eager for a break from winter?

Thanks for posting this. I don't like reading Conan comics... but I LOVE looking at Conan OA pages.

Somebody sought him out and presented that cover to him to sign.... let's give him kudos for not signing it across the characters as has happened in the past with other celeb signatures

There was an earlier thread on this board and also on FB regarding this one. The consensus was that it was not OA.

Fairly high res scans with close up view of the art are publicly available on the HA website. What difference would it make if HA distributed scans?
It may seem like it on this board, but not everyone in this hobby pays attention to Hertiage.
Also, I know not all items are archived on Heritage forever. Not sure how it goes down, but there are auctions I bid on which no longer show up in a search or in my bidding archives.

I think IF they took the extra step to provide 600 dpi scans of art to 3rd parties, that should ONLY be done with the new owners permission.
I don't know of an auction house that does provide high res scans to 3rd parties, so my question was purely a hypothical question.
This is interesting because as we all know, possession of the OA does not grant reproduction rights.
There are many collectors who like for their stuff to be as hidden as possible, beginning the moment they win the piece...
I can imagine these types would not want HA distributing scans, and thus I can imagine HA not wanting to irk their customers.Legally though? If Scott has the rights to do the book, does it matter which of the five previous owners the scan came from? Probably not.

Success rate goes up greatly if you target pieces that have been on the dealer's website for a while (1+years).

Frank Miller Daredevil Original Comic Art Issue #161 Page 22
So.... after any fees, tax and shipping, what will the winner have paid for this one?

Maybe... maybe not.
On one hand, we all know people utilize friends to win their own pieces back when things aren't going as planned.
On the other hand, we're so used to "price discovery" in OA auctions that we get surprised when people actually wait until the last day to put their bid in. In many other collectibles areas, people don't jack things up the first 24 hours of the auction.

Very surprised the Star Wars cover stalled where it did.

What he was getting at is that guidelines for this particular forum require a price be listed as a starting point.

Miller-drawn Elektra pages with Ninjas and swords go for much, much more than this (exponentially more)

To me, Miller DD art is all desirable, but, to varying degrees. Of course, content is king, but, as a rule of thumb, I go by this hierarchy:
1. Daredevil #168-184, 191 - Miller with full creative control, both writing and penciling on the board. Also helps that the best story content is during this time
2. Daredevil #158-163, 165-167 - Miller with pencils on the board but not writing the book. Great that it's art on the board, but, I feel like this is Miller Lite (tm) and not full-calorie Miller without him scripting
3. Daredevil #185-190 - Miller writing and detailed layouts on separate sheets but no pencils on the board. He didn't touch the boards, but, having seen the layouts and knowing they were blown up via lightbox, I feel like this is still very much Miller.
To me, this is the hierarchy and there should be discounts for buckets #2 and #3 all other things being equal. That said, over the years, the discounts have definitely been narrowing, to the point where sometimes it doesn't seem like there's any discount at all. And that's very likely attributable to newer collectors either not knowing and/or not caring about the distinctions laid out above. "Cool Miller DD page, bro" seems to be enough for most people these days.
I agree with what's said about tiers 2-3 in regards to action pages... but I say let's add yet another asterisk and flip that order for story pages.
(100% agree with your statement for #1)

With results for these pages hitting high numbers, I don't think it matters much anymore whether Miller actually touched the paper or not. It used to be a thing, but nowadays, no so much, as evidenced by the super high prices pages from these issues have gotten.
Where is the “thumbs down” icon when you need it?!
it’s possible that pages Miller didn’t ever touch sell for lots of money. It’s also possible that certain pages Miller never touched sell for as much as ones that he did pencil. Hey, it only takes two bidders, right? But there are a LOT (probably well more than 50%, but that’s just my opinion) of Miller collectors who are only interested in pages Frank drew on.
That said, it is also entirely possible that the old whales and Miller purists who fought it out in the 90s and 2000s are not the ones participating in Miller auctions these days, even the pages he drew. They either already have their great example, or they can’t fathom spending $80k for a page they remember seeing on a wall at comic-con 2003 priced for 3500.

And this one doesn't suck either. Normally I like my WM pages to be nine panels and have word balloons on them, but in this case I'd make an exception:
