  1. There may be, but it's not in this issue. I have a beater reading copy and the story is a pretty good read - Buck and a hottie alien chick (hey where's Wilma? ) crashes on a planet called Sargasso that's made up of countless wrecked spaceships. Fun story, but no bat-winged vampire creatures.
  2. So true - those Buck Rogers remind me of the early Heroics...so difficult to find in clean shape. And with such great (o/w to white) pages, too! Well done, sir Thanks! Yeah, Famous Funnies/Eastern must have been hurting due to war rationing and paper shortages. This book has the tanning problem with the cover, single staple, fewer pages and -- something that really freaked me out the first time I saw it -- inset "half-wrap" pages that are glued to adjacent full wraps at the inner margin. It's amazing that any of these survived in nice shape.
  3. Nice pick ups! Here's my Clink win. I've been waiting for a copy that doesn't have the cover tanning problem that seems to be common with this issue.
  4. I think he may have been influenced by George Owsley a bit.
  5. He's definitely not hiding any secrets. Speaking of The Funnies, BZ, since you're obviously a big ERB fan I'm sure you must have copies of the John Carter covers right? I'd love to see a HG #36; for me that was the toughest to track down. Or maybe his first appearance in #30? How about a Hi-Spot #2?
  6. Richard, I have a copy of the book, but it's without the dust jacket. The best I can do is offer up a picture of the BLB or the serialized version which ran in Argosy All-Story 12/9/22 to 1/20/23. BZ, please ignore the goofy looking guy at left but keep in mind I, er, he is 6 ft. 5 in. This is a HUGE Jeff Jones Tarzan painting done as a commission after he did a calendar of Tarzan images in the late '90s. I got it indirectly through Heritage a few years back. Before getting it I thought comics were the be all and end all. But now I get to wake up every day and stare at this! So there you go....some All-Story please! Wow, Richard that is way cool!
  7. OMG! I haven't checked this thread in a few days and look what I missed! I had a feeling this was coming! Incredible, BZ! I've still got nine more pages to go through -- I'm not sure my heart can take it.
  8. Actually, now that you mention it, I starting reading both Capt & the Kids and Lil Abner for the first time when I started picking up these Tip Tops a while back and I enjoy both of them quite a bit. Can't beat Foster Tarzan though!
  9. Thanks, Bill! I think you meant Sparkler and yeah, I'd like to work on those next - some of those Hogarth covers are very cool.
  10. While I'm at it, here's a few more Tarzan Tip Tops that I've picked up over the last few months that I haven't posted. It's run I'd like to complete eventually, but I'm not in a real hurry and not being too picky about condition - they're just fun books.
  11. Just got another early Tip Top Tarzan cover. Too bad someone decided to use it as coaster for their coffee cup, because othewise it's a really nice copy, with great pages. This is a Foster cover BTW.
  12. Is Senorita Rio good or bad, bad as in unlawful? I thought she was a spy or something like that? I don't know much about her. I like it though, I may get one just because she looks good. Senorita Rio was a Hollywood star who became a spy during World War II. After the war, while the other stars of Fight Comics went on to civilian jobs such as boxer or private detective, Ms. Rio continued to work as a spy in South America. She's one of the good guys, er, gals. Not a femme fatale. Yeah, but she's hot and has a gun. (BTW, nice av Sean! )
  13. Man, Chesler really had some great, innovative covers and this is one I've always liked. I've going to have to start collecting them one of these days. Billy, I've noticed you've been picking up a lot of Cheslers lately - I look forward to seeing a group shot at some point.
  14. Man, I never get tired of seeing you post this book! I may have over done it. This is the last time. I promise! That's OK - I've saved the scan!

  17. As another long-time ERB fan, I have to second all of that. The Illustrated Tarzan Book is really a very cool, underrated book. For those that don't know, it reprints the first Tarzan daily strips by Foster, which adapts Tarzan of the Apes, the first novel in the series. If you've never seen Foster's B&W work, it has a different look than his later color Sundays - he's a bit freer and sketchier with his linework and often uses a lot of heavy black chiaroscuro-style, like that for which Caniff would become known for a few years later. BZ, you're obviously a major ERB collector - I'm sure you have most of the pulps and McClurg firsts and I'd love to see some of them. I'd also love to see of ERB related comics - I sure you probably have a gorgeous Single Series 20, right? How about a Large Feature 5, Hi-Spot 2, Funnies 36, etc.? I would love to see some of these if you have them and get a chance to post them. Thank you again so much for sharing your amazing collection.
  18. OMG I've never seen a copy with the dj before! I've been wanting to buy or make a facsimile dj for mine but I never found anyone who offers one. That is so cool!
  19. Outstanding! Am I right in remembering that this illo is the only work Foster ever did for comics? Technically yes - it's the only work Foster did for modern comic books. But he also did the cover of the 1929 Illustrated Tarzan Book, which is a hardcover Platinum Age comic. I'll bet BZ has one of those too, probably with the super rare dust jacket. Yes, I do. Maybe I can get a scan of it posted tonight. Awesome!

That is a gorgeous FB 26! On a related note does anyone know if the covers of the two Rip Kirby Feature Books are the only original works that Raymond did for comic books?
  21. Awesome! Is the guy with noose on his neck supposed to be a self-portrait of Fritz? It seems like I read that somewhere.
  22. Thanks! I'd like to give Matt a big kudos. I know he takes a lot of heat on these boards, but personally I was very pleased with his work. This was the first time I had dealt with him and I thought he was very forthcoming and professional - a positive experience all around.
