  1. That's a no-brainer - I'd take the OA in a heartbeat. That's an incredibly unique piece of history. Jeff
  2. What to do for an encore ... How about another pre-1941 single panel splash from Samson # 1, dated Fall 1940? This is followed by a Samson story from # 1 also. It's one of those pre-war angst story that Theagenes will like (if he ever finishes his job anytime soon. We miss you!). Some of the pages are repetitive. I mean ... we get the point that Samson is super strong the first time around but still it maintains its charm throughout the story and I did find the "streamlined" backgrounds served the story (instead of being a sin of omission for the sake of speed in execution. This is a Fox book after all). Tom, if you're reading this, maybe the OSPG should list Samson # 1 as "Big Screen TV's first appearance." I'm back! And you're right -- I love this story! Mythological character, Yellow Peril, a "pre-US entry" war story - great stuff! Especially telling are the scenes depicting aerial bombardment of civilians -- this was a relatively new tactic that had not really been used much prior to this point (except for a few instances in ww1 and the Spanish Civil War), but it was something that that was greatly feared by everyone going into this war. Many military experts (on both sides) believed that the bombing of major urban centers would be the deciding factor in this new war. As this story was being written, probably in summer of 1940, the Battle of Britain was just beginning and the large scale bombing of civilian targets was just getting underway. The next five years of total war would see this tactic used on a scale that I doubt even a comic book writer could have imagined in 1940. It's always amazing to read these stories thinking about their context and to try and imagine what was in the mind of the writer and artist, as well as the readers. Great stuff, Scrooge! Thanks again for sharing these wonderful stories! Jeff
  3. Well, I just got home today after spending three weeks mucking around in a mangrove swamp, getting eaten by mosquitos -- and I found this waiting for me! I've been bitten by the pulp bug and by Crom it's cool! Now I've got a lot of reading and catching up to do. Did I miss anything interesting? Jeff
  4. He likes eyeballs on skewers? YUCK!!!! Jack Very cool! I'm just seeing this for the first time - I'm down in the Everglades right working on a project and don't have internet access (I'm at a public library in Naples right now). This is a character I didn't even know existed. I'm always interested in mythological or Classics characters in the GA. I'd love to see one of the Thor stories from Weird Comics. Gotta go - I'm about to get booted off this computer! Jeff
  5. I haven't had a chance to read the boards or post very much the last week or so, but I'm trying to get caught up this weekend. Scrooge, I very much enjoyed all the interior stories you're posting - Great stuff! And BZ the pulps are amazing - keep 'em coming! I'm just starting to really get interested in pulps and picked up my first one the other day (an Amazing Stories w/ a John Carter cover). I'm afraid it may be the start of a new addiction. Jeff
  6. Tallahassee. When you say "baby" do mean an actual baby or are you talking about your Action #1. Jeff ben, ben, ben...if you need to know anything about Fl, it is that you don't want to go anywhere near Tallahasse...dat der is home to dem der semipoles...us gators, don't like dem der semicolins...right jeff gator See, normally I would try to do some spoon-talkin' at this point, but since we barely managed to top a .500 record and you guys are coming off a National Championship I think I better just tuck my tail and post one of these guys: I just rewatched that reviting 1986 game (the last of our 7 in a row 1980's win run, before you all "took" over the series)...seems to have swung back in our favor last 4 or 5 years! gator Was that the one where it was pouring down rain? I mean really pouring! If so I was there for that one. I would have been about 14 or 15. That one is etched in my memory forever. We stayed until the bitter end and were soaked to the bone - plus we lost. Good times though!

  9. Welcome to the boards! I saw your thread in the General Forum as well and think you'll find things are a little more tame here in the Golden Age section. Jeff
  10. :cloud9: Hey Bill, have you had a chance to watch any of the FG animated series? As fun as some of the other versions are, I still maintain that it's the best adaptation of the original Raymond strip. And just so I don't get accused of derailing this thread, here's a Flash Gordon group shot! (thumbs u Jeff
  11. Be sure to crank the sound...in fact...drink the bottle of wine first then watch the movie...that way you'll be in the proper mode to enjoy the crazy background FX as well... (thumbs u Well that was fun. Haven't seen it in years, but yeah the wine probably didn't hurt. Ornella Muti as Princess Aura...
  12. I love dells. Do you have a copy of FC Tom Thumb. I had a NM or better copy and had to sell it. I remember it being a cool cover with nice gloss. Actually I regret selling all of my Dells. Over 600 HG copies counting both the FC and Westerns. I was kind of joking. I don't really collect Dells per se; it's just that most of the characters I do collect, like Tarzan, Flash Gordon, John Carter, etc. happened to be published by Dell/Western Pub. or by UFS who ultimately sold out its characters to Dell. Speaking of Flash Gordon, I just cracked open a bottle of wine and I'm about to sit down with my wife and watch the campy 1980 movie that just came out on DVD (even got a free cheesy poster with my purchase from Sam Goody!) (thumbs u
  13. Yeah, great stories, great covers - what more could you want? I'd love to work a run of reading copies.
  14. super-tough to read more than a page or two, do you mean? Oh yeah, Timely is much better Lucky for me I can only afford to collect Dells!
  15. Oh, here ... there ... and everywhere and I don't even look that hard for these scans so I'm sure there are more out there. I've enjoyed your Crack review btw. I haven't finished reading it but I already fear my review will be a lot of: Yup, what Jeff said. The Clock story was a dud and the un-PC-ness of the back-up strip to Jane Arden was a riot. Yeah that was fun! I hope more people will participate. Jeff

  17. Got this today -- a VCC pick up courtesy of Weird Paper! Always wanted a presentable copy of this one with it's early "Mixed Martial Arts" cover. Boxing vs. Jiu-jitsu! Gotta love it.
  18. Battery is charging on the camera, so I will post the rest of the story later today. I got you covered Bill. I posted the splash earlier and kept on wondering why you uploaded it again since it should have been in BZ's checklist until I realized that the Funny Pages appearance is a reprint from the Detective Picture Stories from April 1937 where this story originally appeared and that BZ has listed. It's the first recycled full page splash. I wonder if Bob Kane insisted on getting paid again for the reprint!! Anyway, to answer Ryan, here's the rest of the story. Now I have to go ahead and actually read it ... That was great! Scrooge, where do you get all these files from? Are these all books from your own collection that you've scanned?
  19. Cool! I'm really enjoying all these splashes and double splashes! Keep 'em coming!
