  1. I think he's saying "leave it to the pros". There's a lot of nutjobs running around with hand steamers and tacking irons these days.
  2. Cool, I'll check it out, thanks! Update: Wow, some nice prices on Showcase ($1.95 for Superman Family vol 4) and LOTS of Archives for about $10. Nice, thanks again! Second update: Geez, $150 later, I've got a big box of archives heading my way. Thanks again for the heads up, I can't pass up those golden age archives for $8-$10, and Sugar and Spike for $15! Thank/curse you!
  3. This Parrillo cat seems to really have a thing for squishy boobs. Not that I'm complaining.
  4. Have you seen the NECA comic action figure? It's pretty terrific.
  5. Yeah, they really put out terrific stuff, and were beautifully produced. The 80's was a new golden age.
  6. That's the whole point of the hobby, collect what you love, and care for it in the way that makes you feel secure. Whether they're only worth $1 or not, if it's worth it to you, that's what matters. I hope to see more collectors with your mentality, and less of the only slabbing things to get a 9.8 to flip.
  7. WHOA. Been looking for that 2nd print for years, never seen one in person. NICE!
  8. It's hard to say, because they're two very different books that are going to appeal to different sorts of folks. Bronze age Marvel 1st appearance of a C-list character that may pop up in a movie or tv show at some point, or the first appearance of a genuine cultural phenomenon that is currently cooling? I'd think it would all boil down to what you'd pay for them. WWBN is popping right now, and if a movie or something is announced it'll keep heading up. But after the announcement, or the failure of one to materialize, the price will level off. Meanwhile, Walking Dead has the small print run, and is the beginning of one of the biggest television events of all time, but is going to keep cooling as the show continues to decrease in popularity. But even if demand decreases, there still aren't nearly enough copies to meet the demand for them. In the longterm I think WD would be the more solid book. I don't think it's going to increase in value beyond the current highs, but it should maintain better over time. I dunno. The books are apples and oranges. But I'd personally rather have another WD 1.
  9. The only defects I really can't forgive are brittleness and incompleteness. As long as it's all there and not literally falling apart in my hands (i.e. I can actually read it), if the price is right, I'm good. Of the specific scenarios given, the extra staples would bug me the most, I'd think. I'd rather it be completely detached than sloppily stuck back on. But again, it all depends on the book in question and the price.
  10. I picked up an 11,000+ book collection in December (I think? Could have been November) of completely unsorted, randomly boxed books. As for getting them organized for sale, the short answer is: chip away at it, a bit at a time. When I had an evening with no other plans, I'd head out to the garage and pull down a box, and start going through them. I brought a couple of empty long boxes, and started sorting into three sections: stuff I was keeping for myself, stuff I was going to sell, and stuff I'd never be able to sell. (These were all indy books, so there was plenty of pure drek.) The pure drek boxes stayed in the garage, where they remained until I sold them at $25 a box to a guy on Craiglist. The keeper (for me, and for sale) boxes came into the house, where I broke them down further: the stuff I was keeping for myself has just been put aside until I can assimilate it into my personal collection. No rush there. The rest of the stuff, I want to move, so I started sorting THOSE boxes into more empty boxes: semi-valuable books that are worth pulling, scanning and listing on their own, and stuff to sell in lots. The lots I broke down into runs or categories: manga, 90's Image, modern Image, Cerebus, Dynamite, etc. The point is, it takes a while, but a system of constantly whittling those large boxes down into manageable groups, and then organizing those individual groups, is what works for me. Good luck!
  11. Every time I see this thread title, this is what I think of. Also, Pro Tip: do not watch Hellraiser:Deader.
  12. And this is the other one. I'm sure even if it came up for sale, I wouldn't be able to afford it, as it's sorta become a classic cover. And yes, I DO have a weird thing for giant, nekkid space ladies, why do you ask?
  13. Been looking for this one forever. Even asked Tom Yeates, and he doesn't have it, or know who does.
  14. Nice! I haven't spotted Ghosts, Batgirl, Superman Family or Atom around here, yet. Good to know that there are some different titles floating around out there. I've picked up about 30 of these Showcase tpbs now, it's an addiction!
  15. Hadn't seen it! Let me stop highjacking this thread and go take a look...
  16. Fair enough, and like I said, I don't disagree with you. But I could also very easily see CGC saying "be happy with what we've already given you." And I'd have to accept that as well.
  17. Do people care about Terminator comics again? I have a long box full of the various Dark Horse series that I picked up in a collection. I have...lots of Terminator comics.
  18. Yes, the Unwrapped volumes are neat! My local Ollies had a bunch of the Kubert and Daniels volumes. I bought one each for myself, but considered buying a couple more since they're such a nice deal (I think something like $34.99 MSRP vs $5.99 Ollies price.) I wish they had some of the "Noir" volumes, as those are books I need for my personal collection, but haven't felt like paying for so far. (Black and white hardcover reprints of books I already own in several editions already. Joy.) I think my favorite find so far are the Mad Archives, which are $60 msrp, selling for only $6.99. I also like the various Archives, but a lot of the material has been reprinted in Omnibus form. I wish I could turn up a copy of Seven Soldiers of Victory Vol 2, since 1 & 3 are out there in abundance.
  19. I'm don't necessarily disagree with anything you've said so far, but I think the larger point is: why would CGC put that much more work into any of this? They're already providing a fre message board for people to loiter on. There was probably a time in CGC's history where fostering a community was important to their bottom line, but I'd suspect we're well past that point now. Books are going to keep rolling in to be graded by the truckload. Why would they care if their message boards are thriving or not? I'd expect that it costs them much more to maintain than they are realistically seeing in return. I'm not saying that any of your proposed fixes are a bad idea, but at the end of the day, what does it profit CGC to see to them?
