How to distenguish which version I have?
seanfingh replied to Travni18's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
You are making it a little more complicated, but that is OK. The A-1, A-2 etc. are levels of conservation/restoration. None of that matters unless you have a conserved / restored book, which is very unlikely for a modern book. The most likely type would be color touch. What you need to get is that there are four classifications of grading Universal, Signature, Qualified and Conserved / Restored Blue Label which means the grade is not qualified in any way - it is a Universal grade. The other types are Signature (which must be witnessed by a CGC rep or otherwise follow their protocols), Qualified, which means the grade is not Universal, there is some type of latent defect that must be broken out and explained or else the assigned grade would appear to be wrong, and finally Conserved / Restored which means something has been done to the book (pieces added, color touch etc.) -

I'll get into a bidding war . . . This book is hilarious. If it was a kid that did this back in the day, then it is the most anal-retentive kids ever. Must have spent an hour with a brand new X-Acto knife. If it was an adult, it was the stupidest thing ever. I love this book, honestly.

Are there any Gary Gygax SS books out there?
seanfingh replied to troydivision1's topic in The Signature Room
Dragon Con has a sweet way of checking the guest list from past cons. Gygax was not at DragonCon in 2007 or 2008, which would have been the only two that I would have been looking at after I was doing SS and before he died. So my memory has failed in that regard . . . -
Are there any Gary Gygax SS books out there?

I was talking about the AD&D and / or Dragonlance comics that DC put out. I also thought about having him sign one of the D&D ads, but I couldn't remember if they were ever on a back cover or if they were always inside. -

He was at DragonCon at least once. I was hustling to try and get books down there. I have no idea if it was as attractive to anyone else, because I have always been a huge D&D nerd as well. I have never seen a Gygax book, for the record. -
Help Identifying A Signature - Mortal Kombat X
seanfingh replied to archivist's topic in The Signature Room
Logically, it seems like it should be Shawn Kittleson; that really appears to me to be an "S" and a "K." Have you found other examples of his sig? -
We need a 'why would they sign this book???' thread

Sorry I blew up your comedy routine. -
RIP to a true legend. I spent a lot of time with him as a witness over the years and he was overwhelmingly often a charming and affable guy. It impressed me how easily he grasped the concept of signing and drawing for money at cons. I bet he made more money drawing and signing at cons between say 2010 and 2019 than he did from Marvel, DC and Continuity combined when he was in his prime. Sad day.

At the time it was signed, he had no ties to Marvel. But last year he did voice-over work on a Star-Lord cartoon, so it has been shriven clean!!! -
Need Help Identifying This Signature.
seanfingh replied to the1supaguy's topic in The Signature Room
It doesn't appear to be anyone who worked on the book, nor is it any of the normal Star Wars actors. I would see if you could track down some intel on voice actors for the cartoons. That is where i would start. -

That is the book I got the Avellan twins on. I looked at a bazillion copies and I still got a 9.6. Very well done!

I would only do this if I absolutely loved the Dominic Fortune stories. Because (if you are worried about the future marketability of the books) there are some for whom any signature is a no-go, and some SS fans who will not really be seeking Chaykin out on that book. It is kind of the inverse of the Logan's Run 6 issue - where there is a small Mike Zeck Thanos back-up story in the back of an otherwise, pretty blah book. So you get a Zeck SS on it and it is pretty cool. Your two magazines are cool for the very early Punisher appearances, and i think that cuts against getting them Chaykin SS'd unless you are really a huge fan of the Back-up feature.

No - it is a large print run and varying ink levels. To me, the greatest example of this is New Mutants 87. They run from a deep, almost completely red to a very light orange. They are not errors or variants. they just encompass the entire large print run, and appear to testify to the fact that, at some point, some of the inks were significantly lower later in the run. If you made me bet my own money, I would bet this MCP 2 phenomenon is exactly the same thing.

CGC Boardies 20th Year Anniversary! 2002-2022

OG Pimps -
I don't know if CGC has changed its position or not, but I have had an unstapled book mailed back to me without slabbing. The note stated that they would not encapsulate because the pages would not be secured, and could be damaged inside the slab. In an odd coincidence, it was a Jungle Action 8 also starring Black Panther.
