  1. I have Neverwhere on discs. It is definitely an odd story, but in a fun BBC production kind of way. So go into it knowing this is going to be different. And I meant that in a positive way. Popped Disc 1 in. Not as cinematic as I was hoping, yet interesting, but I'm gonna wait until I'm in the right mood. Kinda reminds me of the late 80's Colin Baker/Sylvester McCoy Dr. Whos. I've been too spoiled by the current BBC imports like Orphan Black, I guess.
  2. Bought Neil Gaiman's NeverWhere at a thrift shop near work today for $3. Can't wait to watch it, I hear it's good. But, I have to catch up on my Black Friday movies I bought first. Damn you 22 Jump Street and Hercules, damn you both to hell!
  3. As much as I want to say there were standout performances from the norm, there wasn't a Heath Ledger this year. He still stands so far as the only actor to receive an Academy Award for his comic book movie role. At least, for now. Roxbury native Chris Evans showed the most emotional depth as a funnybook actor in... Snowpiercer. Radius TWC should at least run a campaign for him. But, salary envy will pretty much eliminate him from any chance of winning. Hollywood can be a pretty jealous place and having a nine picture deal with the Mouse House hurts his odds. It's what made me chuckle a couple years back, when someone earnestly suggested Robert Downey Jr. win an Oscar for The Avengers. Super-talented actor, but essentially cashing paychecks for Disney. Academy Award politics will probably never go in his favor again. Heath Ledger, changed so many things for his character and the tragic circumstances of his death while doing his craft helped him standout to voters that year. It was the perfect storm for the talented young actor to win... deservedly. In my humble opinion, because of the lengthy and expensive deals with a lot of these franchises to come. I don't see any of them bringing home major prizes again in March. Their success will their reward enough. The Academy always roots for the underdogs, with a lot of passion. It would have to be that type of a graphic novel movie.
  4. I'm hoping Big Hero Six gets attention too. Even if it is just a nomination. What a cool movie. I can see a Best Animated Picture nod, riding on the creators/contributors coatails of Frozen (the director was the guy who voiced the hulking shopowner who doesn't sell to Christof). I think the academy will probably just ignore the X-Men franchise as it's been around for almost forever in Hollywood years. Depending on how special the sound effects were gotten from (a vcr ejecting a tape-RoboCop's walk or a dogfood coming out of a can-T2 going through prisonbars), it would be hardest to predict that category. Captain America seems to be somewhat noisy to be noticed though. The Lego Movie might do well too. As always (since 2008), I don't see any official comicbook movies getting noms in any of the top major categorys though. Cut Spider-Man 2 actress Shailene Woodley will probably (most likely) get a nom for The Fault in our Stars. Before someone starts saying who cares (when obviously they really do), there are movies with heavy superhero veteran casts that can up to 10 nominations, like American Hustle (Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence).
  5. People already stoled Cool Books from me, so go ahead and steal Hot Rage....as long as it's an all girl band. I would see an all girl band named Hot Rage. Heck yeah. You know a lot of girls who look the part, can any of them play musical instruments? If so, I say lets get this thing started. Most of them think they can sing, but none of them can play instruments. Or musical instruments anyway. Ummmm... Hello? The Donnas
  6. Big Hero 6. I guess it's a Marvel property and top grossing movie of this weekend. http://www.juno-news.com/news/read/category/Top%20News/article/the_associated_press-big_hero_6_interstellar_soar_at_box_office-ap Comic Book movies everywhere!
  7. Gotham is very expensive to produce as well. Being a FOX show in it's first season, I wouldn't be surprised, if...
  8. I like it. It makes me want to go buy Hellblazer graphic novels. Cool character. (thumbs u Makes me want to rewatch the Keanu film. I just spent hours going through the extras a few months back.
  9. Remember kiddies, When you see a car mysterious filling up with murky water at an alarming rate, you want to use the crowbar to struggle at prying open the door so the actor can hit his mark on the ground with a quip instead of just smashing out the door's window.
  10. I liked last night's episode a lot better. Still a lot of cheezy monster effects (reminds me of Buffy '96 or Smallville Season #1), but there is a tone it's trying to set. I think it will get there eventually.
  11. Ex-Machina's preview is out, So I guess that's on celluloid now too.
  12. ...and Locke & Key's unaired live-action pilot (2011). Which I've never seen*. *a lot of bad blood there and not the cutesy Taylor Swift/Katy Perry kind.
  13. Can we throw in "The Scribbler" (2014) too. It's based on an Image graphic novel by Dan Shafer, starring Arrow's Katie Cassidy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scribbler_(film) ...some photos: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2396721/mediaindex?ref_=ttmd_md_sm It's not too bad for a micro-budgeted funnybook movie, we all have seen worse from $300 million productions recently.
  14. Myself, I don't see this show lasting too long. Besides creative issues, it's a "licensed" property residing in a Friday Night death sentence. Grim's situation is a little different. It had nothing too lose to build an audience, too much of the same without the creative forces or powerful ensemble cast like a CSI or NCIS spin-off and it will wind up like "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland".
  15. OK. It's not awful, but it felt like one of those syndicated supernatural private investigator shows from 90's. If the producers wanted to skimp on the budget making the effects look like Buffy the Vampire Slayer's (circa 1999) then they should of added a level of TWD-style grittiness. It really wanted to transport us to some seedy underbelly of the occult, but it just regurgitated satantic cliches instead. But, I admit it has promise. I'll stick with it. For now.
  16. For me, it was like watching Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and City of the Lost Children for the first time again. Even though I guessed the plot revelation of the end right off the bat, I really enjoyed how this movie got there as they crossed each gate. The sound effects and most of the visuals were absolutely stunning for a modest budget movie like this too. All the actors really brought something to the table, but the real surprise for me was Ko Asung, basically marooned in a thankless clairvoyant role. She brought a lot of the film's humanity back after Jamie Bell stopped doing so, and a haunted Chris Evans who really shows a deeper side than he is sometimes not allowed in a few other funnybook projects. I see him directing in a few years. I would rate this three and a half stars out of four.
  17. I just finished this movie. I absolutely loved entering this world for 123 minutes.
  18. I guess in his mind, not only did Logan love her - he was forced to kill her. So he is haunted by this memory, along with everything else that has taken place in his life. I kind of got that feeling even in his scenes with Tao Okamoto. No matter what or where he was, he couldn't shake off what he had done. I guess in comic books, we kill people and then move on. No muss , no fuss. For me, it was just rehashing something we already knew. Soap operas tend to beat something into the ground with techniques also (flashbacks, ghosts haunting characters, etc). Anyone who watched the first three movies should be able to get he loved her, she kinda liked him, he killed her. It's gotten to a point where it's kinda creepy in a way. If Jackman was a craftier actor and not just a box-office stud (once you do the obligatory Mel Gibson butt shot...), he would have incorporated more subtle nuances to his character, of emotional longing in between fighting without having to go the distracting General Hospital route. He's a ronin after all. Instead, the direction makes Famke Janssen lends charitable fellow actor support and share the emotional baggage too (yet again) to make Jackman look like a romantic leading man (and she died twice in the franchise-talk about beating a dead horse). I know movies rely on things visually, but the draw to Wolverine is that he's a man of few words. Things happen to him that shapes him throughout the centuries. Granted, having no romantic actors to radiate off doesn't always work either. Take Thor coming back to Earth in The Avengers and totally dodging Jane. It came off as shallow and comic-booky. Then there is Kate Beckindale building her character's whole drive and obsession of finding her lost love Scott Speedman (who never bothers to show up for production) in Underworld: Awakenings. But, I digress...
  19. I think I would have it at three, but can't go wrong either way! Yup, it really teeters between three & four. I gave the original the third position in the end because of it's "importance" to the franchise and comicbook movies in general.
  20. I thought this was a really good movie. I've watched it a few times now because it had something different about the storyline. The only detractor I could have done without is Viper. What a throwaway character that was after a while. They should have limited her to five minutes of screen time. You know, I didn't mind Viper and I really liked this one while watching it, but I just couldn't shake the feeling of too much FOX studio "control" out of my head. They were injecting too much story (Elektra) into something that should have gradually trickled out plot elements in previous movies. The tell-tale sign was hiring Jackman's "Kate & Leopold" independent film director James Mangold. Jackman probably felt he would be a pushover for a big Hollywood production. The intimate charcter scenes felt out of place with the 2nd unit action ones, ruining a tone and balance. The Famke Janssen parts felt out of place too, considering she has been dead for a decade on celluloid. You're a comicbook movie character, who wasn't really dating her, move on to the next "doomed" love.
  21. I watched it for the first time too yesterday night. I really enjoyed it. I would rank it fourth in the franchise though. #1. X2: X-Men United***1/2 #2: X-Men: First Class***1/2 #3: X-Men*** It had stunning visuals and (as almost always) well-played characters, but it just felt too familiar and because of sequelitis there was no suspense for me during the climax. Three stars. #5: The Wolverine**1/2 #6: X-Men: The Last Stand** #7: X-Men Origins: Wolverine*1/2
  22. I really enjoyed the first three seasons of the Superman Animated Adventures, season one of Justice League Unlimited and Superman Unbound. HATED the Ultimate Avengers Movie.
  23. Oops!... I did it again . It wasn't my prerogative to make Brittany all overprotected (Dark Child Remix) by Chris. I just thought it was outrageous that she didn't admit that the company's first venture had toxic results. But, no doubt if she is stronger so this thing might have that boom boom and folks might try it one more time if they are lucky. When she reads this, she might think "(I can't get no) satisfaction" in CG and want a piece of me. So, I'm gonna stay under the radar for now. -Jerel who is In the Zone
