  6. *************EDIT 4/3/2106: Now down to 25 cents each! Just skip to the end for an updated list of what's left. *************************************** I'm looking to sell a number of shortboxes of indie books from the 80's and 90's. And I'm happy to sell them for a pittance. Many years ago I went to the trouble and expense of bagging nearly all of these in acid-free boards and Mylites. I understand that some of these might be worth more for the Mylar than for the books, and that's fine. I just want to sell these to anybody who has an interest in them, even if that interest is just in using the Mylar to protect something more valuable. If I have several of a title, my preference is to sell the title as a single lot. I didn't take pics because, frankly, if things sell too cheaply it's not worth my time to photograph. I'll be glad to photograph or scan within reason, though. Let me know what you'd like to see. I know some of these had multiple printings, and that the printing number isn't necessarily stated explicitly in the indicia as is customary. I mostly didn't bother checking to see which printing these were. If you're interested in something dependent on printing, feel free to say "I'll take it if it's a first print", or whatever. Otherwise, just assume that these are later printings. And now for the fun part. The prices. I have to list a price per board rules, so I made up a price for everything. If you want it at the price listed, it's yours. However, if you want it for less, just find it on eBay. Find the cheapest comparable one you can on eBay (checking both current and completed listings). Then make an offer of half that price. Odds are good I'll accept the offer, as long as the eBay one is the same book in similar condition. You may not find exact matches for these sets I'm offering, but I can come up with similar pricing. I want these books gone. Oh, and if you live anywhere near Springfield, Massachusetts and you want to take several boxes worth off my hands, just to get the Mylars, that's cool too. Let's talk. Looking forward to the flood of PM's now... Oh, yeah. More details... Shipping $4 in the US for any number of books. Shipping at exact USPS Priority Mail cost anywhere. Outside the US, shipping is at exact cost, but I only ship via insured methods so it could be pricey. I ship once a week, on Saturdays. Payment by PayPal. Returns within 7 days for any reason.
  7. I just picked up Nellie the Nurse from MyComicBookArt. Great book, great packing, fast shipping. Thanks, Michael!
  8. I second that. I've bought many Harvey File Copies, and other books, from Blissard. Well-graded, securely packed, quickly shipped. What more could a buyer want? I've seen references to the Harvey warehouse/file copies over the years, and have often wondered how many there were. In fact, I was curious enough that I was finally going to start a thread saying, "I'm sure this has been covered somewhere, but... what's the story with this seemingly endless supply of file copies that keep turning up?". And then, along came this thread. Thanks for all the info!
  9. I recently became familiar with Van Buren and Abbie an' Slats. Fun strip. I have some GA books with reprints of those strips, and also some bunches of strips that somebody cut from the newspapers. Since I'm a comic book guy and not much of a strip guy, I thought I'd put this out there... Anybody know if there are any resources out there that would help me identify the original publication dates of the strips that were reprinted in the comics? For example, I have some issues of United Comics with Abbie an' Slats. But how can I tell which strips those United Comics reprint? I've had no luck with GCD, but thought perhaps somebody more knowledgeable about strips could point me to a similar database for strips.
  10. Just got a couple tasty little variants back from CGC. I was hoping for a 9.8 on the Spidey Gold UPC, but I can't complain about a 9.6. The Sandman 8 variant is one that I had signed by Gaiman somewhere about 1995. I was surprised that the note indicates just "Name written on interior cover" and not "Neil Gaiman written on interior cover". It got an unqualified 9.4, which I presume means it presents as a 9.6 or 9.8, but is downgraded due to the writing inside the FC.
  11. Jeremy sold me some cool old coverless GA books. The books were as described, and he was very accommodating, even going out of his way to allow local pickup. Thanks!
  12. I was about to post this photo taken with my iPhone, and then I read the prior (very helpful) posts about location services. Plus, I've always detested the way pics from the iPhone will rotate themselves incorrectly on a PC even after I explicitly edit the orientation. So I took a screen capture of my photo. This lost some resolution but it should strip out personal info. Here's my True Crime group shot. All of the US editions, and two Canadian ones. Still looking for additional Canadian issues.
  13. Thanks to Chuck Gower's latest sales thread, I found a version of the Johnson Smith ad that fits the description in this book. Check out the back of Jungle #8:
  14. Yup, I'd say it's the catalog for Johnson Smith Co. In the ads on the back covers of Action 1 and 'Tec 27, their catalog was hundreds of pages and cost only 3 cents... unless you wanted the cloth bound copy for a quarter. I didn't find a reference to the "9000 items" on either of those ads, but since their ads were more ubiquitous than the Charles Atlas ads in the 50's and 60's, I'm sure somebody with a much larger collection than mine would be able to find a Johnson Smith ad that exactly matches the description in the pamphlet you have. Although we'd probably find many of Sister Mary Clare's "obscene" items to be tame by today's standards, some of them are still rather shocking. Check out this page devoted to them: Darwinscans Johnson Smith page
  15. I'll have to dig out the ad I'm thinking of... I'm thinking this might be one of the ads for the Johnson-Smith Co. Sure, it's obscene if you consider x-ray glasses that don't work and whoopee cushions obscene. I'll see if I can find one this weekend and see if it matches the description.
  16. After years of collecting SOTI books, and finally completing that collection to the extent that I think it can be completed, I had to pick up one of these. It's not in the same league as some of the beauties I've seen here, but it was within my budget. So glad to finally join the club!
  17. As many times as I've witnessed your comic sleuthing superpowers, you still never cease to amaze me, Scrooge. Thanks! The last of the Boxie Weaver stories in Blue Beetle ends up with a teaser that he's about to meet up with "The Champ." In the first issue of Sparking Stars, Boxie takes on "The Champ" and becomes the new Champ. In the page I'm looking for, Boxie himself is referred to as "The Champ". So it stands to reason that the page I'm looking for is in Sparkling Stars, not Blue Beetle. The book I have has a copyright date of 1945, so it's unlikely (but not impossible) that the published page was dated prior to, say, April of 1946. That would put the page I want somewhere between Sparkling Stars #1 and #12. Scrooge checked #2, and I checked #1, 3, 5, 10, 11 and 12 with no luck. So the most likely candidate for this page is Sparkling Stars #4, 6, 7, 8 or 9. Now I'm on a mission... Thanks again for the assist!
  18. Well, it is pre-code. It's just not a comic book. I hope I'm posting it in the right place... this one seemed logical to me, anyway. Typically I pick up things related to SOTI and the comic book censorship movement of the 40's and 50's, but every now and then something else jumps out at me. I thought this was really cool, so I decided to share. This 1945 book teaches you everything you need to know about how to create comics. It covers comic strips and comic books, as well as advertising illustration. Well, I guess it's not quite everyhing you need to know. How about everything you can fit into 48 sparsely-populated pages? I wasn't familiar with the author, Robert Peterson. At first I suspected he might be a nobody with zero credentials who decided to cash in on the success of comics by creating a book about them. But then I spotted this guy who made me think "Catman". And then I saw the page that purports to have been written and drawn by the author, and published by Holyoke. So I went to GCD and found that Robert Peterson did work for Holyoke. He's credited with stories in several issues of Sparkling Stars. Anybody know if he had any other published work, like Catman? Or, here's a long shot, anybody recognize the Holyoke page below?
  19. Anyone know if this website was created by someone here on the boards? Yes. I own the site, but it's had many contributors on & off the boards.
  20. Jeff bought a copy of SOTI from me. He paid very quickly and was a pleasure to do business with.
  21. That is why I buy all the material have the frame shop cut everything, frame, matte and glass and frame it myself. Love that idea! When I get around to framing my Watchmen page, I think that's the way I'll have to go. Thanks for the tip!
  22. Here's the advice I recently gave to somebody who asked me a simliar question. 1) Buy what you like. For any potential purchase, ask yourself, "if the bottom of the market fell out tomorrow, wiping out any monetary value the art has, would I still be happy that I bought this art?". If the answer is yes, it's a good piece to buy. If it's no, keep waiting for the right piece. 2). Published original comic book art is nearly impossible to fake well. Sketches can be faked with relative ease. Let that inform your purchasing decisions. Personally, I rarely ever buy sketches. 3). Invest in some Mylars for art. They are not cheap, but they are essential if you plan on keeping your art for a long time. 4). Be very careful when having art framed. I paid that I thought was a reputable framer to frame my Bolland Animal Man cover, and I found out years later (after the framer was out of business) that they had glued the cover down to foam core board! 5) Read the "New to OA Collecting" thread on the boards, which has good advice. Always get plenty of advice, which gives you lots of informed opinions from others who have been there. Then choose which advice is right for you. After a while, you'll have enough experience under your belt that you'll be able to offer advice as well.
  23. My advice would be more like "Always Go by the Golden Rule of Collecting". That Golden Rule, as you've heard from others, is "buy what you like". I respectfully disagree that the "go for the gold" approach to buying art is the right approach for everybody. For some people, this might be the way to go. For investment, this is good advice. But this approach is not the right approach for every collector and it's certainly not for me. Telling a collector to "only buy the really nice ones" is like telling a comic book collector to "only buy first appearances and keys, and only buy 9.8 or better." For some collectors, that approach works. Other collectors might prefer an entire run in 9.2 (or 3.0) to owning just a single book in 9.8. It's all a matter of collector preference. If everybody just went "for the gold", then Amazing Spider-man #2 in 8.5 would be selling for a quarter. I decided in the mid-1990's that I wanted to own a piece from each of my favorite artists and characters. I bought what I could afford: I got a Starlin Captain Marvel page, a Smith Conan, an Adams GL/GA, a Watchmen page, etc. The pages I got were okay, but not prime examples. Sure, I would have loved a NICER Starlin CM, a nicer Adams GL/GA, and a nicer Smith Conan. Rather than buy all of the pieces I did, I could have held off and bought a single nice splash. However, if I had held out for only nicer pieces, my collection would be much smaller and I never would have acquired one of each of my favorites. Now my collection is complete. I don't buy original art any more becasue I accomplished my mission and I'm happy with what I have. It is important to recognize that the really nice peices, with iconic images from top-name artists, are always more liquid that the lower-tier, less-expensive pieces. When somebody is buying solely for investment, "go for the gold" can be good advice (but still not the right advice for everybody in all situations). However, if a collector is following what I call the Golden Rule of Collecting, then future liquidity should not be as big a consideration as other factors.
  24. My positive feedback has been building on eBay since way back in the days when nobody head heard of them (they gave me a t-shirt at SDCC back in the 90's, when they were trying to get going). You'll find me there as MyComicArt.com (my user ID and my website). Here's my very own feedback thread for the boards.
