It looks like you may have discovered a long forgotten Book of the Month Club edition Killing Joke. Congratulations! Now, is it just a 4th printing, or was it included in a package, or are there any others, or....?
VERY, VERY cool. It's not often that an undiscovered 80s artifact is uncovered, ESPECIALLY for one of the most popular books of the decade.
And look what I found:
Looking at this book, there is no way it is a 9.8. More likely a 6.5. CGC hammers this book hard and this book looks hammered.

It doesn't hurt that it's the greatest Joker story of all time, and probably the top 3 Batman stories, after Dark Knight and Year One....but I'm biased.
It is my favorite Batman story, followed by Dark Knight and Year One. Hush is up there as well.

If you can believe it, I actually owned one of the 10s around...2005 or so? Shoulda kept it. Sigh.
My 1st print, I was sure would be a 10. It was either my first or second submission, so, maybe it really is only a 9.8.

There are some foreign versions that are embossed, but, most are not. I agree, the embossing made it stand out a bit. There is also a Black Label version that was supposed to come out in September, but, apparently got pushed back while DC does some reorganization.

Here's the link to it, if you haven't seen it before.

Besides...you have the #1 registry set, and have had it for years, so if anyone deserves credit for discovering an unknown version, it's you.
Maybe CGC will make me famous again and write about it in their book of the month.

Mine is the 9th printing as well. The blues are close behind it though. I wish they would not have used yellow so much. 6 printings are yellow. They could have thrown in purple, white, gray, or whatever.

I'm scanning to see if any other printings can be found, and the likeliest culprits are 3rd and 5th, but my gut says that they wouldn't have done this more than once, and it just so happened that when they did it was the same time the 4th was being done, so....4th it is!
I searched every listing I could find, on E-Bay, last night and did not see any others. Then again, I missed the one you posted, so could be others possibly.

Just for fun, I shot BOMC an email asking what other comic book editions they did...if I get an answer, I'll follow up and see what they know.
FUN!
I was thinking of doing the same thing. Definitely interested in what they say. Maybe time for a Book of the Month Club registry set to be recognized by CGC, if there are enough other books out there

Nah, you were on the right track, I just poked you in the right direction.
This is what makes collecting fun. And I may have figured it out eventually, but, you expedited the process.

And I couldn't have figured it out without your input, so, thanks.

Great, now they'll be coming out of the woodwork. Might have to call CGC and see how they would handle this book.
Here's the one I got.
-
That is very interesting. Wonder how many other books were offered by Book of the Month Club. We know of 2 now.
-
Might be Book of the Month Club edition.
-
Now to figure out what it was packaged with.

Inside of the front cover I see this. @RockMyAmadeus

Excellent! Report back when you find something! (I'm guessing...just a guess, here...that it's possible it was included in a "toy" or something....which, admittedly, would be weird that it was the 4th print.)
Kind of what I am thinking as well.

Huh. No UPC code on the inside covers? No other info on the front covers besides the standard info?
I can't think of a reason why that information would be missing otherwise. The 4th printing was made sometime in early 1989, so they would have had to go back to the negatives, but the negatives wouldn't have changed...and, of course, there doesn't seem to be any other anomalies like this.
Think I figured it out, maybe. Have to do some checking on something.

Can you detect any sort of printing anomaly? Any difference in the book, or the place where the missing dress would go?
Book is identical in every way but the missing printing on the back cover. I have compared it to every copy I have (all printings) and on E-Bay and this is the only one I have seen like this.

BATMAN THE KILLING JOKE
in Copper Age Comic Books

Found another one I have not seen before. 6th print Newsstand with UPC on the front cover. Unfortunately the seller does not have a picture of the back cover.
Mycomicshop also has one, 6th print as well. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Batman-The-Killing-Joke-1-REP-CGC-9-4-1988-2058668022/312801274311?hash=item48d468a9c7:g:vG8AAOSwEy1doZmz:sc:USPSPriority!89130!US!-1
