Original Merchandise Comic Art (Interest, Value, ...)
Captain Canuck replied to Captain Canuck's topic in Original Comic Art
Would that NES box art be more valuable if it was a Jim Lee Batman or Superman, which he is more well known for? Made up Example: Let's say McFarlane drew an image of Spider-Man in a classic pose, no backgrounds or webbing, not the most complex image, but only appeared once on tv as promo ad to never be seen again and was colored for tv purposes. Would it still be less desirable even though it is a McFarlane Spider-Man? Would the value be different if it was drawn during his Marvel days? Or is it just lumped in with other pinups/merchandise art and will never come anywhere close to the value or desirability of his Wizard pinups, which I think have sold for 5-6 figures over the years. If you wanted the same basic image from him now it may cost you 5 figures as a commission if that was an option. -

Original Merchandise Comic Art (Interest, Value, ...)
Captain Canuck replied to Captain Canuck's topic in Original Comic Art
Do you think the Schulz image is similar to a cover? It's different from a daily or Sunday strip. I believe it's a step above a commission. But would I buy it because it's by Charles Schulz and cheaper than a daily or Sunday strip? I am not sure. Would others be just as interested in it because it's a step above a commission and more affordable? -
Original Merchandise Comic Art (Interest, Value, ...)
Captain Canuck replied to Captain Canuck's topic in Original Comic Art
Thanks Malvin. Is merchandise art in a similar category as a cover or is it in a separate category altogether? As well, in your opinion, in the pieces you have, does the artist or character make a difference? Lastly, are merchandise art considered desirable in comparison to OA comic pages (I am referring to comic merchandise art in comparison to OA comic book pages)? -
I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm interested in getting some thoughts on buying original comic art that has only been featured on merchandise. Is there value in collecting merchandise comic art, especially if it's produced by a well-known comic artist? I'm looking for the pros and cons. Also, is merchandise comic art considered published original art, is it on par with a comic cover, and does it appreciate or retain its value like published art? Will it be considered less desirable in the future? Does the popularity of the artist (Jim Lee, John Romita Sr., Mike Zeck, Jack Kirby, ...), the character featured (Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Hulk, ...), or where the art appears make a difference (t-shirt, poster, underwear, tv promo)? Additionally, does it matter if the artist is known for that character, or if the amount of characters or backgrounds/effects drawn affect the value? I know the saying is to buy art that you like, but economic factors come into play, especially when considering the initial cost to buy the piece and if I ever need to sell it in the future. Lastly, what is the cost to purchase merchandise art compared to a published page (not all published pages are considered equal, issue, what's on the page and so on), is it 1-to-1, 50% less, ...? Anyone can charge what they want, it doesn't mean that is what it is worth. For example, if Herb Trimpe drew the wolverine or hulk to appear on a t-shirt, advertisement, or poster, would it have the same interest as a published Herb Trimpe Incredible Hulk page? Does merchandise art count as a published piece? The images are from David Finch (art appeared on posters, t-shirts, sneakers, ...), Dick Giordano (t-shirt), Mike Zeck (t-shirt) & Charles Schulz Snoopy (not sure where, but again a very recognizable character by its creator).

Superman 1 Centerfold and Info Requested
Captain Canuck replied to Captain Canuck's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I agree that I have had high quality responses and that this an art and not a science, but correct me if I am wrong, but there should be a rough reasonable estimate of what a centerfold should retail for. If you were to go out and buy one today, what would you pay and expect it to be selling for? -
Superman 1 Centerfold and Info Requested
Captain Canuck replied to Captain Canuck's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Not doing it for the money. Doing it for the love of owning Superman 1 and eventually a complete issue. I always like to know that if I ever decide to sell it (rainy day, emergency fund), then I can hopefully get the most out of it possible. I assume a restored complete issue goes for more than an unrestored incomplete issue (blue label). My ideal is to keep this issue and pass it down, but it will always be considered a keepsake first and an investment second. -
Superman 1 Centerfold and Info Requested
Captain Canuck replied to Captain Canuck's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I already own a partial centerfold, 1 page missing coupon, not the second. I own the back page ad, but it is the on sale now variant and missing a piece of the cover or back cover to complete my copy. From what I am gathering I should be looking for the on sale June 2nd variant to increase the value/desirability of my copy. I am also oblivious to how much it will eventually cost to fully restore my copy or if it is even worth it to restore or just keep it as graded pieces of a whole. -

Thanks, but I don’t see any comps for centerfolds, the ad page (June 2) or a partial cover or back cover on any of the auction sites. I think I only need part of the wrap to leaf cast and have it declared restored. All 3 are not easy to come by. Is a centerfold worth $25K, $10K or even just $5K? If I make an offer on that eBay centerfold, I want to at least know it was a reasonable offer and didn’t over pay or be able to walk away and know that I offered what it is actually valued at. -

Will the last page On Sale Now or On Sale June 2 back ad make a difference going forward in regards to value and desirability? I am slowly piecing my incomplete book back together. Should I be holding out for an On Sale June 2 and assume there will be a premium on them if the back page variants are a thing? -

Joseph above feels $5K is more reasonable. The fact is I don't want to offer far more than what is reasonable/fair, no desire to pay someone the highest recorded price for a centerfold. That is why I am asking what the rough going rate is. -

Are you saying it is for sale for $10k or that is what a centerfold goes for? The link provided says $25k? My question is what is a reasonable price for a Superman 1 centerfold? Anyone can ask for any price, doesn’t mean that is what it truly worth. -

Captain Canuck replied to Captain Canuck's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Evidently it didn’t sell at either price. What would you consider is the current fmv for a centerfold? -
Could you please assist me in finding the going rate for a Superman 1 Centerfold and let me know how easy or difficult it is to find one? Additionally, I am also searching for the last page of Superman 1, and I'm curious if it matters whether I purchase the available now or June 2nd Action Comics 14 page. Lastly, I'm wondering if fragments of Superman 1 cover are available. I assume that a fragment could be leaf-cast and still be considered original cover/wrap? I'm considering what it would take to complete and restore my issue and the cost for restoration. Any help or information would be highly appreciated.

If only this was the case, but assume the issues with the On Sale Now are 2nd/3rd printing.

THE AMAZING FANTASY #15 CLUB
Captain Canuck replied to HarveySwick's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
Based upon my previous question and proof now of a signed CGC copy, not the other guy. How much would a copy like this, exact same condition go for roughly on the open market today? 1.0 prices have changed vastly over the years. -
Wow! I have 2 single pages around somewhere. Didn't realize they were going for that much.

Captain Canuck replied to HarveySwick's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
Wow! I thought it would be worth 6K max. Maybe I should consider selling mine. I imagine the max I will be able to get for mine is 7K, again it is a rough 1.0, but does have a Stan Lee verified sig, when it was still legible and neat. -

How much does a rough CGC 1.0 go for these days and does CGC SS Stan Lee sig make a difference? -

Based on the increasing numbers in Canada, I doubt the ones planned will go on as scheduled. -
Amazing! What commission bracket can you get today for the same price you paid then?
