  1. I am sure you already looked, but if you go back to page 8 I posted both my back covers and both have the A.

Ok, we've established that many of the Archie 1 comics have an "A" on the back (which stands for "Archie" obviously) And many PEPs have a "P" on the back.

But, many of the Archie 1 comics DON'T have an "A" on the back. And it's not because it's been cropped off, it's because there are two different versions.

  2. I just dug out my undercopy of Archie 1 and it has the "A" in the EXACT same location as the 7.5 restored copy on ComicConnect.

Again, this is not a huge deal, but I think it shows there were 2 printings of Archie 1.

It's kind of like the "period" variant on the Batman 1 cover.

  3. I too have an "A" on my Pep comic. Not sure if all of them, have it or what it even means.

What issue of PEP? 22? Does it have the same back cover?

I was thinking the "A" might have meant Archie, but if it's on the old PEPs that wouldn't make sense.

Maybe it's a registration mark of some kind? Can any of you board members who were printers maybe chime in on what this is?

  4. You sure that "A" isn't an ink stamp?

Definitely looks like a printed ink "A" to me. It's the same color blue as the rest of the type on the page.

BUT... I just noticed the "A" is in a slightly different place on the two "A" variants I've shown.

Some of you other Archie 1 owners need to chime in on whether your copy has an "A" on the back cover.

Maybe we need to call this the "Shifting A" variant.

  5. I just checked out the three Archie 1s for the next CC auction and think I've made a "Variant Cover" discovery!

Check out the back cover for the 7.5 restored Archie 1.

Do you see that at the bottom of the back cover? Yup, the letter "A" in the bottom margin.

Here's what the regular back cover looks like. No "A"

    http://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=543963

I have scoured all my other back cover pics for Archie 1 and don't see it anywhere else..... except for one place..... The current SC Archie 1 on ebay has the same "A".

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/131145238585?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

    So there's the confirmation.

    I will call this...the "A" variant!

In the grand scheme of things does it mean much? Probably not. But it's still interesting to find.

Look the cover over and see if you can find anything else that's different between this cover and another Archie 1.

  6. I bought a complete coverless Archie 1 12 years ago. It's now the inside of my restored 6.5-ish copy. But I have yet to see one since then.

Ugh. That bodes not well. :P

I seem to be building a collection of high end comics without CFs.

  7. Tough to say. As you know there was a 2.0 universal that went last month on Ha for like 16.5. The pages were the same. This cover, which actually does not present as well as the 2.0, CGC calls a 2.5.

I see no reason it could not bring $5-8,000, but I do have a question ... and please excuse the ignorance. If you found a centerfold, what could this book hope to be if you popped it in and had no other work done? Let's go as far as to say the paper quality was a near perfect match.

Would it be a 2.5 Universal with loose centerfold, a 2.5 Qualified with loose centerfold, or 2.5 slight amateur resto?

    Great question.

If the 1 staple matched up, I dare say this could become a 2.5 Universal and be worth quite a bit of money. (might be worth pulling the cf from my restored 7.0 to try it).

I suspect that CGC would keep it as a Green Label. With maybe a grade bump? I say this because I had a 2.0 Green Label Wonder Woman 1 that was missing the CF. I found a CF for it and put it in and resubmitted it. It came back as a 3.0 Green Label. I sure liked getting the grade bump!

If Cgc was going to give it a 2.5 green or purple, then the next question is whether or not to send it to Matt & Kenny for a full resto job. If you can't have a 2.5 blue, would it be better to have a 7.0 or 8.0 purple than a 2.5 green?

  8. Yeah, when you compare it to that it seems more like a six or 6.5. Though based on those pics I think that Crippen copy's a bit undergraded.

You know, you're right! That one is undergraded.

The census says 7.5 is the highest graded so you'll be pretty close with yours.

I found a super high grade 53 that I need to send in. I wasn't going to collect any Archies past #10 but this 53 I found was so gorgeous I couldn't resist.

  9. I'd like to know what comic book store would tell this guy it was a 2.5?

A comic book store that was trying to steal the comic.

Plus you have all of us looking for a centerfold for you so that can't hurt your odds!

    Yeah, but I need 3 centers :P

  10. Yeah you're right, prob 6.5-7.0 actually based on what I am seeing lately from CGC. Regardless, I'm thrilled with the way it presents.

PS. SparkleCity is at it again ... just posted a universal Archie 50 (5.0), and a qualified Archie #1 (2.5) missing the centerfold.

I just looked at the Sparkle city Archie 1.

I had to laugh because the coloring makes it look like Archie & Betty have a horrible case of acne. Even Archie's hand has bad acne. And Veronica has a rash on her leg.

They are teens so I guess it works.... and actually makes it kind of charming in a way.

    Still a great copy.

I still need an Archie Centerfold so knowing this comic is out there is going to make it tougher on me.

  11. I need:

    Cfs to:

    All Star 8

    Captain America 1

    Superman 1

    Archie 1 (I need 3 centers)

    I have:

    CFs to:

Four Color 9 (Donald Duck finds Pirate Gold)

2 center wraps to Walt Disney Comics #4

2 center wraps to Whiz 8

    Whiz 12

    Det 78

    Adventure 55

    All-Star 39

    Marvel Mystery 83

    Detective 115

    Action 85

    Batman 23

    Superman 32

    Superman 42 (middle 2 wraps)

    back cover to Flash 103?

  12. All right Archie Club members.... I've seen some chatter here about which covers you like the best so let's go ahead get some unofficial rankings.

Out of the first 20 issues of Archie (plus Archie 50) list your top 5 covers (in order of coolness, not value).

    Here's my list:

1- Archie 1 - This is not just iconic, it's really well done and has the 4 main characters.

2- Archie 8 - First "Wow, this guy knows how to draw "Babes" cover.

3- Archie 13 - Another sexy "B&V" cover that emphasizes the love triangle.

4- Archie 50 - Love this cover (Archie's glance says it all)

5- Archie 3 - First "Love Triangle" cover

Honorable mention goes to Archie 10&11&14 - All great covers

  13. Thanks guys.......(I'm kicking myself for letting one go under guide 1-2 years ago..........) It was a 3.0 but not a nice 3.0.....

I sold my Sensation 1 CGC 1.8 3 years ago and have been regretting it ever since.

    Stupid stupid stupid.

I can't even remember why I sold it. Hopefully it was to buy a nice comic.

    Luckily I still have my AS8 & WW1.

  14. This thread needs a bump and I saw this over on the restoration thread so I thought I'd post it here.

If you've never seen the magic that Zeman can perform on a comic with leafcasting here it is on the 1st wrap of an Archie 1.

  15.

We all know there are many copies of the first printing of this book out there,

and I would venture to say that this applies to all of the Death of Superman

    x-over issues (MOS 19, Superman 74,75 & Action 684 and JLA 69 to name a few).

This eBAY sale is merely confirmation of that fact and I hope that the buyer has

enough sense to avoid flooding the market with CGC 9.8 copies. That being said, I

don't see why MOS 18 first printing is any more than a $100 book in CGC 9.8 due

to plentiful supply, unless demand really spikes due to the Superman/Batman movie.

There are a LOT of CGC 9.8 copies for sale right now on eBAY and most

are NOT going to sell at their current listed prices.

So how many 9.8s do you suppose are in an uncirculated box of 300? 100?

    How many 9.9s? A couple?
