  1. Mostly GA GGA books here… a few GA cool covers not GGA. Won't be a long thread...will list books today, possibly tomorrow, perhaps a dozen total.

To make it easy up front, prices are firm and I won’t be entertaining offers by PM or at end of thread. I’ll try to price these fairly but if they don’t sell they’ll just go back in the box.

    Rules:

All books are returnable within 2 weeks of purchase for any reason. I try to give decent enough scans and pics to enable judgement of grade or detection of resto. Paypal, CK, or MO accepted. International buyers welcome if you can pay for shipping that includes tracking. If you are well known on the boards and international, your books will ship in a timely manner upon any form of payment. If you are international and unknown to me, you’ll either have to pay by CK or MO, or have a long-time ever-present boardie vouch for you directly to me.

Shipping costs are exact costs. USPS Priority envelope or box, well protected, is the default method, but other methods are possible. If shipping ends up being more than what you’re charged, I’ll refund the difference.

No bidders of ill-repute, yadda yadda yadda.

Well, looks like we can toss another Promise Collection resale into the red Loss side of the ledger, even after a rare successful CPR upgrade:  :tonofbricks:

Sold for only $4,902 as a CGC 9.6 graded copy, as opposed to $5,280 back in 2021when it was only a CGC 9.4 graded copy.  Not sure if it ever sold on Worldwide even though it was listed as a so-called "Sale Pending" at $8,500?  (shrug)

The major points- Promise books tend to be overgraded and not CPR candidates, overhyped, and buyers paid sums that won’t allow a quick flip- thus far are supported by the data.

That said, if this Planet 59 is a legit 9.6   (iffy from scan; plus is there a dust shadow at bottom front and back?), 5-6k seems reasonable for a pedigreed Planet second only to the Church copy. In 5 years it will easily sell for more given the trajectory of Planets.

Although now knowing this 9.6 was pressed, I’d rather have the unpressed  9.4.

Which actually represented a drop of $1,200 or 9% in less than a year from the $13,200 that it managed to fetched back in November of 2021:  doh!

So… this book has already sold twice in last year, and is up for sale again with a reserve at least 25% more than sale 5 months ago?

    Several negative thoughts:

    1. Maybe this book is a hot potato that evokes buyer’s remorse once in hand (unlikely);

    2. Seems like way too many books are immediately flipped these days, with the majority of buyers being flippers, who are outcompeting collectors for books that would otherwise go into a collector’s vault;

    3. If buying, one better research all sales data available to know the extent  you’re about to overpay. Fortunately, Heritage sales are captured in GPA but I have to admit I don’t follow sales not captured by GPA, nor can I easily spot a CPR book.

All that said, this is a book I’d definitely buy and pay high on, based on the general principle that HG HTF keys are like decent yield T bills at a minimum, with little risk if you’re willing to hold long enough. I guess I just don’t like to see these books treated like widgets.

Would I get flogged if I said if it hadn't been for the Centaurs, this would be one of CLINKs weakest auctions in quite a while?  Very few Batman's, small offering of Detectives.  Usual Spiderman array but not a ton of the normal ubber high grade.

I’ve noticed excitement (and perceived quality of auction) around any auction usually depends on the superhero books, especially those you mention.

A long time ago I decided there are rarely bargains in popular marvel/DC superhero titles in CLink, so I just rapidly swipe through them. I review my historical purchased list from CLink and it’s about 1% of these books.

No doubt I’ve missed out over the years ignoring these books. And my long held assumption, that these books can’t appreciate at a rate that warrants playing aggressively in this pool, was obviously wrong (at least for the last 5-10 years). And it is these books that lift all the other books, and the hobby itself. But no regrets, I’ve probably saved hundreds of hours by not mulling, bidding, and ultimately losing in these books.

It's surprisingly hard to think of too many series that had *consistently* great covers. Probably stems from the journeyman nature of the business... artists were constantly being rotated through lots of different titles. (And from the publishers' standpoint, if an artist feels like they 'belong' to a title, they're gonna want more money!)

With that said, Planet Comics (1940s-1950s) deserves a shout out. Easily 1/2 to 2/3rds of the run are great covers, and not too many clunkers.

100% agree. 73 issues and what, maybe all but 10 strike one as “gotta have”?

I’d venture to say that for GA collectors this title is in the discussion for most popular non-superhero title. Perhaps certain EC’s are more popular (?) but the appeal of this title seems to have taken off last 5-10 years.

A better example as an analogy to comic books than baseball cards, especially for GGA collectors, would be pulps, pbs, men's magazines, pin-up calendars, etc. - all of which have been left in the dust by certain GGA drawn covers (not even the real thing) that sell for incredibly high prices by comparison. (If you put a gun to my head and asked me what genre is most likely to crash for comics - I'd pick GGA.).  So these kinds of analogies aren't very persuasive to me.

    Every market is different.

    Was with you until here.

I was wondering if anyone has started a "grumpy old men...comics edition" thread somewhere....always figured the guys in the Golden Age forum probably had one, but haven't seriously looked, if so it would be great to get together and complain about how everything was better, and even the drek was better drek, in the good old days....creases were sharper and clearer, everyone smoked so you didn't notice the cig smoke on everything, the LCS "comic book guy" was a real jerk, and not today's wannabe poser jerks....man I miss the old days...

lizards2 only plays the the curmudgeon for the comical opportunities it provides. Imagine Robin Williams channeling Michael Douglas in Falling Down.

Well first of all the collection is still being SOLD...check the weekly auctions and there are some excellent books out there....the body is not "cold" yet....these premature sales have no meaning until the collection is completely sold and a reasonable amount of time has passed, I would say at least -9-12 months after the end of the auction. Come on guys...give this collection a legit shot amount of time...you have jumped the gun and the conclusion. When I purchased the Mile High comics at over double guide...I could not resell them for anything close that....and look what happened...Promise books are great LONG TERM holds not a quick super flip......

While I applaud the foresight of paying high on Church keys decades ago, buying a Promise book today at above market price is really not comparable. There is no way an overpay on a Promise book today is going to outperform the conventional long term investment (e.g. a Dow index fund) over the next 10, 20, 30+ years.

The long term value of Promise books has already been (over) baked in to the auction prices.

I think there are numerous other comics to buy right now with greater long term ROI than almost all Promise books sold to date. That includes most Church books, a lot of Archie books, and (still) many GGA books.

Or if you really like Promise  books, buy some other asset with a good ROI over the next two years, then buy the dip on the Promise book.

So Bob is almost fully caught up to 2017 pricing on Seven Seas, got it.

And you almost had me convinced earlier that it was about time to buy a new copy.

It appears that only the top few books are accurately assessed at current market values with values progressively lagging as you get down the line.
What will be interesting to see is if books in the genres poorly represented in this top 100 list (including GGA, PCH, Sci-Fi) appreciate at a greater rate than the top Superhero books. My sense is they are on a greater trajectory.
Personally I’d rather own the top Baker, Frazetta, Cole books than many of the books on the top 100 list, although I would certainly enjoy owning any of the books on that list!
