An particular Disney characters or titles? juggle.gif

    ...got any Four Color Ducks............

like series II #9 - Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold?

How about Walt Disney's Comics and Stories, any 1930s children's books, or Large Feature Comics (if you happen to have any).

  2. If you have any favorites (titles, publishers, specific issues, etc.) you'd like to see in the future, let me know and I'll add them to the list. hungover.gif

I've very much enjoyed all the books you've been posting. The breadth of your selections has been really outstanding. I'd love if you could sneak in a Disney comic once in a while. Beyond that, I like to be surprised.

Btw., when you first started posting those Dell Funnies, I really felt like that would be a cool, overlooked title to collect. That all changed when you got to the Phantasmo covers...

Thanks again for all the work - it is greatly appreciated!

  3. Here's a pretty nice file copy I got recently. It was graded NM for Hake's by David Anderson. Technically, it is probably close to that but it has the usual browning on the interior covers that kills books at CGC. I expect it would get an 8.0 or so if I were to submit it. Although I'd probably lose a few $Ks on this particular book if I were to sell it tomorrow I've been so happy with DA's grading in general that things even out. A considerable fraction of the books I've received have actually been slightly undergraded imho. Since I've been so positive in my reviews of DA's grading over the past few months, I wanted to point out that page quality may be one thing to look out for in his grading.

I think CGC's emphasis on paper quality is a really good thing. 10 years ago, I suspect grading a book like this NM- or NM would have been widely accepted in the market.

  4. This is one of my earlier issues.

Overstreet describes it as the 1st comic of a single theme. DetectivePictureStories1GA.jpg

Thanks a lot, BZ: it is really awesome to see all these great books that are rarely posted! This thread is probably the best I have ever seen on the GA boards.

Btw., those irrelevant photos above are a real eyesore. I hope you guys might consider deleting them... I vote for showing bang-zoom and this great thread the respect they deserve.

I still haven't gotten over the FC 4. For those not familiar with Disney comics,

this key book is incredibly rare in any condition above VG. I have never seen a

copy better than FN. In comparison, there is an abundance of high grade copies

of most of the later Disney Four Colors due to the Poughkeepsie file copies.

All indications are that there were no such file copies of FC 4 and FC 16. And

FC 16 is considerably more common than the #4 with at least 3 CGC graded copies

above VF+ (although only 2 appear in the current census). Even Steve Geppi said

in an interview that he did not know what he would pay for a high grade FC 4

(which I guess is how rich people express that they really like something).

If the book in the picture is as VFish as it looks, it would be one

of the most desirable individual Disney comics in existence known to me, right

up there with the Crescent City WDCS 1 and the March of Comics 4 9.6 in the

    CGC census.

Anyway, I just wanted to emphasize what Bang-Zoom is throwing at us: at least

based on the picture, this is no ordinary Duck book!

    ----

Edit: Answer to question below to avoid disturbing the thread:

    > FC 16 - what's the deal with this book lately?

Geppi bought one copy for around $8,000 from Comic Heaven on eBay in 2002.

That one was a raw VF- or VF if I remember correctly. Then he bought another

CGC VF+ for $14,000 in early 2004. Yet another (different) VF+ copy was offered

in Hake's Jan. 2005 auction. It had an estimate of ~$20,000 but did not sell

as far as I remember. Heritage has an 8.5 in their upcoming auction which

is different from the one that Geppi bought - I don't know if it is the

same as the one from Hake's. Then there's a 9.2 in the census which might

or might not be an upgrade of either one of Geppi's copies or the third one.

Anyway, with so much action I'd hardly consider this book super rare - even in

    grade.

For FC 4, there are no high grade sales recorded that I am aware of.

  6. WOW!! That's the most beautiful copy of FC 4, my favorite book, I have ever seen!!! In fact, I just posted my own copy with a plea for upgrades in the "Show us your Ducks" thread last week.

I have _never_ seen such a wonderful copy of this before. Thanks so much smile.gif!!!!!!!!

  7. I've never seen that Mickey Mouse book before! 893applaud-thumb.gif

Is the comic art a reprint from the newspapers or is it original to the magazine?

All Floyd Gottfredson? Or early enough for Ub Iwerks?

Not that I'm very good at telling them apart.

The two strips are daily reprints from mid-April 1930. I'll see if I can scan the one on the centerfold (when I get around to scanning another nice new arrival). There are some variations of the book that have a blank space instead of the strip on the back cover but I don't think the experts have figured out which is the first printing(?).

I can't tell whether they are inked by Win Smith or Gottfredson. Iwerks wrote at least the first few weeks in January '30 (which were submitted for syndication) but I don't think he inked any? It must have been right around this time the transition to Gottfredson happened. The gothic theme certainly has the feel of Gottfredson's early stories but I'd need to look it up.

  8. Thanks for all the photos, bang-zoom! Just incredible stuff...

You mentioned that you liked the "well-written" funny animal books? Would you mind telling a bit more about what you meant by this?

What tb's trying to ask you is do you have any barks ducks in there!! cloud9.gif

Actually, I'll be excited and thankful to see whatever bang-zoom might decide to share. If anything, I'm with RHG on the pre-hero Tecs. Although we have all seen the covers before, a picture of any unknown copy would - I think - make the '07 top 10 list for lots of people here.

  9. Despite the foxing on the front cover, I was really happy with this copy of the first Disney book (which is very difficult to find in nice shape). It is remarkably flat and glossy and the interior looks like it was hardly ever read. One fun note is the copyright notice on the daily states "by Walter E. Disney Great Britain Rights reserved". Note the 1930 caricature of Walt Disney.

And, yes, it was a beautiful day in Northern California!

  10. tth2: Does the 1930 Bibo and Lang book qualify as a Duck book? I can't find any ducks in it but I don't know where else to post it? It would quickly get lost in one of the Platinum threads...

    ---

And ft: would it be at all possible to show or tell a bit more about Daffy's first appearance? That's such an over-the-top character and I am curious how he started out?

  11. Absolutely love that early Bugs page, ft! I've never seen the interior before but that page certainly makes this book a lot more interesting to me. Any more fun early appearances like that? In any case, thanks a lot for taking the trouble to photograph it for us. Learning to appreciate new areas unexpectedly is one of the best things about this place.

Here are some more WDC&S. I get a real kick out of finding them this nice:

  12. No, this is the Bangzoom collection,

How about the Bangwideangle collection? (sorry - it was so bad I couldn't resist crazy.gif). Seriously, the p-word is out - and a refreshing change it is too!

And I hadn't really recovered from the first picture yet...

  13. V1#10. Most of the early covers are classic - this is another of my favorites. Pretty book, too: as beautiful at it appears in the scan.

    mmm110_1000.jpg

Here's a typical puzzle. Mickey Mouse Magazine was still almost entirely a children's book at this time.

    mmm110_1.jpg

I am not sure where the inspiration for this page came from:

    mmm110_2.jpg

    --------

V1#11. This is a composite of 2 images that got a bit misaligned. The actual book has near perfect edges. Finding early books in this shape is what collecting GA is all about for me! Once again from Jeff Lotman's collection.

    mmm111_1000.jpg

Still only a few "comics". The contents were mostly text stories and puzzles.

    mmm111_1.jpg

The story below was adapted from the 1935 Silly Symphony "Water Babies". This short had virtually no storyline - it was all about music and cute babies. I like these risky, artistic experiments and how they are reflected in the magazine. Thankfully this particular one had very little impact on the modern comic book format.

    mmm111_2.jpg

    --------

    V1#12.

    mmm112_1000.jpg

The most "comic" comics page in the book:

    mmm112_1.jpg

    --------

This concludes volume 1 which is the hardest to find in nice condition. From V2 the quality of my set improves quite a bit - look forward to sharing those books later.

  14. Actually, I meant this photo! ComicsTable1.jpg

I wonder if this could be the most tantalizing and beautiful sight

anyone in the hobby, except you and a certain gentleman from Boulder,

has seen since ABBA ruled the charts and the Carter administration

    still was going strong?

That picture is so far off the charts there are no words to describe it.

  15. The early Walt Disney's Comics & Stories are among my favorite GA covers. Especially #21, which must have been designed shortly after Pearl Harbor, has a unique combination of a very serious message and a lighthearted Disney character.

It is very hard to find these books in nice condition. I was really happy to get an unusually "large" set recently (including the best #7 I've ever seen!) - will post the rest later.

#19. There is a variation of this issue that has distracting white streaks in the center of the cover art. I assume the copies without this error were printed earlier(?).

    wdcs19_0107.jpg

#21. The top of this copy is not faded - the gradient was part of the original artwork.

    wdcs21_0107.jpg

#27. Just a great cover: early Disney when it is best!

    wdcs27_0107.jpg

    ---

    Edit:

#28. This one is a double cover (inner sold as 9.0). I have since upgraded this issue.

  16. tb, I hate to say it, but I nominate this post as " 'Turd in the Punch Bowl' Post of the Year." 27_laughing.gif

    flowerred.gif

grin.gif You've already had more action in this thread than we usually have in

a year. I just think we should give bang-zoom a little time to think and reflect -

he deserves that. This looks like a truely historical find and I hope we

don't scare him away with our impatience.

Jon Berk's questions got lost a bit but they are really important for everyone

who loves comics and pedigrees - much more so than scans right now. I too would

greatly appreciate if you could try to answer these, bang-z?

Btw., FFB, if I were to win the award I would display it proudly beneath my

name in the left column (arch?).

  17.

The comics are NOT for sale.

    Awesome.

893applaud-thumb.gif I am sure this comes as no surprise to most of us and it is just

fantastic how you have kept a collection, which you paid a small fortune for

back then, intact for so many years!

Just for the record, I have always shared what little I own with everyone

else. I have posted scans of all my books and just sent my original art

collection half way around the world so other fans can enjoy it for 6 months.

I get nothing out of this except the joy of sharing my passion with anyone

interested. I am extremely indebted to sacentaur, jbcomicbox, rarehighgrade,

adamstrange, tth2, ciorac, scrooge, ... and many(!) others who so generously

have shared their treasures with the rest of us. With my previous post, I

merely wanted to point out some observations so you can make the decision

    that is right for you.

  18. I posted this in General in the "what do you look like" thread, but thought my brothers and sisters in Gold would enjoy my daughter getting ready to read a couple of recent acquisitions..

Congratulations on the 27! A book like that represents a lot of hard work and dedication and it is great to see it ending up with a super and, as this picture clearly shows, very lucky guy! Thanks for sharing.

  19. > Is that FC 4 the copy just sold by bigloo on ebay?

No, but it is also a CGC 5.5. FC 4 is one of my favorite books. If anyone has a nice copy I'd pay $15K up for a CGC 6.5 or better.

Unrelated, since some people expressed interest in the Carl Barks originals I posted a while back: my whole collection will be on exhibit in Krems (near Vienna), Austria, from March 25 through November. I flew down to LA and delivered it to the organizers this past week.
