  1. Yes, just recently, in fact - a friend of mine at the LCS suggested I try Shirt-Less Bear-Hunter. Pretty hilarious in a silly sort of way.
  2. I was 6 years old, and it was Christmas time. Back in those days Virginia had a Blue law, where most stores were closed on Sundays. We lived about 45 miles from the TN line, near the twin cities of Bristol VA and TN. "Main Street" of Bristol was called State Street, because the state line went right down the middle of the street. So on Sundays, all the businesses were closed on the VA side but open on the TN side. One Sunday we went for some late Christmas shopping, and I saw a Superman comic on the stand. Very striking cover for a 6-year-old, and Superman was my favorite, I just had to have it. My mother warned me that buying things near Christmas was not a good idea, but I wouldn't listen - I would even spend my own money on it. Come Christmas morning, guess what Santa left in my stocking? Learned an important lesson that day. Had two copies of that book in my collection for many years. Don't know what happened to the other copy, but here's the one I still own:
  3. thats a good one. read every one 5-10 times each. favorites-double deuce and chance. Favorite quote so far in Rachel Wallace: "But you work awfully hard sometimes at being a wise guy. And you look like everything Rachel hates.” “It’s not hard work,” I said. “What isn’t?” “Being a wise guy. It’s a gift.”
  4. Been reading the Spenser books, only up to Book 6, though, Looking For Rachel Wallace.
  5. Thanks for the links. Ended up we were way too busy running around doing tourist things, but I appreciate your response. Closest I came to a comic shop was a street stand with art, books, and some comics, where I picked up an Italian issue of Daredevil, and a shop in Rome we just happened to be passing that had original art (which was way out of my price range).
  6. Hardy-har-har. Yeah, relatively speaking. But the places in Florence/Firenze that we are visiting are not particularly close to either location, ie we won't be walking down the street and say, "Mama mia, look, a comic shop!" (And my apologies to anyone offended by my horrible cliche)
  7. Thanks, I'm not sure whether we will be close to either location, but I'll be on the lookout.
  8. So, I'm leaving shortly for a couple weeks in Italy, and thought I'd see if anyone could recommend a comic shop. We'll be in Florence, Rome, Naples, and Sorrento, with day trips to a few other places. We've got a lot planned, so don't know if I'll have much time to visit a store, but figured I would put this out there just in case we were "in the neighborhood" during a slower portion. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
  9. I post all my currently read stuff in this thread, you'll find stuff that people have been reading there: If that's tl;dr my current pick would be Strangers in Paradise, which I've been rereading. Just saw a new title from Moore in the June Solicitations, Parker Girls, which should be fun.
  10. It doesn't really apply in this case - given the grade, the value of the book likely doesn't change and it doesn't sound like you are sending it back - but in general, I believe they DO care. And not just because I think they are a pretty good company who cares about these things, but in a practical sense. My understanding is that their position is that at the point a consignment book is sold, it's now MCS's book - that is to say, if there are problems, with a return or whatever, MCS is the one to deal with it, it doesn't go back to the consigner to deal with. @mycomicshop can confirm, but I think that's the policy that's been stated before.
  11. Probably too late to matter, but they did have a table at Awesome Con.
  12. And I also wanted to note that over the years, I have occasionally run across a bug on the site, and Conan has always very promptly responded and fixed those errors. Or informed me it wasn't really a bug and to shut my trap.
  13. I'm assuming you told them what maybe they might consider doing with that suggestion?
  14. Long time since the last update, thinking I've fallen further behind, but let's see... Last count I was at 60 for the year. Black Hammer Reborn #10-12 The Quantum Age #1-6 Black Hammer, IMO, works best when it sticks fairly well to the Golden and Silver Age pastiche that Jeff Lemire started with, and it works quite well in these two series. Well, except for the stupid cliffhanger endings of BOTH series. Looking forward to The End of Black Hammer or whatever he's calling the one next year. Knighted #1-5 First series from AWA that I've bought that hasn't been a name I was already familiar with, like J. Michael Straczynski or Garth Ennis. Pretty good, I thought. Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone: Walking Distance, The After Hours, The Midnight Sun I wasn't familiar with these books, but my daughter ran across them at a second-hand bookstore, and gave them to me. Comic adaptations of actual episodes of the show. Great source material, so well worth a read. Midnight Rose One Shot Not Jim Starlin's best work, by any stretch of the imagination, but still a decent read. Nameless #1-6 Grant Morrison, so what else can I say? Love them or hate them, it always makes you think. Quarry's War #1-4 Another Max Allan Collins selection from the Hard Cases Crime series. Good stuff, makes me want to check out the regular books. Minky Woodcock: The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini #1-4 Looked really interesting, and I'd enjoyed the Hard Cases Crime books I read before. This one, not so much. I think if it hadn't purported to be based on some real stories, I might have liked it better. Not All Robots #1-5 A suggested title from my LCS manager. I enjoyed this - but I wish I had read the description of this being AFTER I had read all the issues. I kept looking for the parallels, and it distracted from the story. King of Spies #1-4 Another recommended title by the guy who recommended Seven Secrets. Not nearly as good, but still a decent read. Strangers in Paradise Vol 3 #6-24 Continuing from last month, my rereading of the series covers the last of the Image issues, and the return to self-publishing. Terry Moore as always delivers. If you haven't read this book, what's wrong with you, dude? (Imma gonna keep saying it until you all join in, ) Seven Secrets #13-17 As I said last time, this one has it all - ancient secret societies, forbidden love, sword fights, doomsday weapons, intrigue and betrayal, battle royales and combat by trial, snappy dialogue and huge cliches that somehow work. I'm really hooked, and am looking forward to seeing how this storyline comes to a close (I assume) in the next issue. So if I did the math correctly, that puts me at 129 for the year. Yeah, definitely behind. Oh, and @RayJr, just wanted to say, for a while there you were all over the place, which was fun, but then you took a huge swath out of them there Thor issues! Man, respect.
  15. It probably falls within the same area as pressing - they couldn't do anything about it, so it's okay.
  16. Yeah, I've talked to him at a number of conventions, and he's always been very nice. And I even told him up front that I wasn't a fan of slabbed comics and would never be a customer.
  17. Just wanted to gather all the things that would not be clearly visible while in the slab that either are not now noted, or will no longer be. (The highlighted shows that the "fully split spine" isn't as much a change as I thought. Wow, 98% split and no notation? Who knew?) I don't buy many graded books, but I've always assumed that anything that wasn't visible would be listed on the label. I guess they should remove this line from their "About" page: "With a consistent standard, impartial grading, expert restoration detection and a tamper-evident protective holder, you know what to expect from a CGC-graded book."
  18. So, Conan, does MCS currently, or will they in the future, provide graders notes in the listings for slabbed books?
  19. Now THERE'S a true capitalist! You can't stop a corrupt decision, but you sure can profit from it!
