Buy this one (this actual copy) at Kleise's Delicatessen off the spinner rack and I'm outraged at the backhanded way they raised prices from 15 cents to 20 cents (via the double-size issue for one month ploy). Pedaling the bicycle back home, I vow that if they raise prices just one more time, I'm giving up comics forever...

From the NY Times : Vincent Zurzolo article
hippiecop replied to sagii's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I dunno. I actually thought it was kinda interesting seeing the "normal" stuff he does in life. After I read all the ridiculing the article got, I actually had to check again to see if I was missing something. It seems rather innocuous. Don't quite understand all the fun being made of it... -

My adventure with 8000+ comic books begins
hippiecop replied to StrikeOutXXX's topic in Comics General
Not sure I would shut the door on the "double your money right now" offer. I know it's like a treasure hunt right now, but there will likely be a time where after months (years ?) of looking at them taking up space, your time, and your mental energy, that you may say to yourself "why the hell did I take this on...?? Hopefully not, but the luster does often suddenly wear off regarding a project like this... -

How, or why, did you start collecting comics? Here's my story....
hippiecop replied to Galen130's topic in Comics General
I love every one of these stories, whether they date back to the 1950s, or the 1990s. MUCH more interesting to me than the latest GPA of the latest hot book. Or who is upgrading their collection from 9.4s to 9.6. Keep 'em coming gents...!! -

Amazing Spider-Man Collecting Thread!
hippiecop replied to Point Five's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
Fantastic copy !! Due to Spidey being so small, the cover gets no love at all, but I've always thought it was very underrated, and have always liked it. -

HighVoltage, that was an awesome "redo" of the #13 cover ! Would love to see more- can you play with background colors too ?? One of my favorite thing about the 70s/80s reprint mags (Marvel Tales, Greatest Comics, etc.) was when they would reprint them with different colors, or slightly alter them. -
Please don't apologize for the story. Speaking for myself, I enjoy a great story like yours WAY more than reading about rumors about what characters are going to be in the latest TV show/movie, or GPA moving averages, or what's heating up on ebay...

Who assigned the background colors on Marvel Comics?
hippiecop replied to shadroch's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
Another one- I love the mint green A S-M # 20 background, but how much cooler would it have been with a starry dark blue or purple night time sky background...?? Okay, now I AM spending too much time on this stuff... Too bad there's not some sort of app to play around with colors on comic backgrounds. -
Who assigned the background colors on Marvel Comics?
hippiecop replied to shadroch's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
Great topic ! The background color has always resonated with me and affected my enjoyment of covers. None of my favorite Silver Age covers have boring white backgrounds, and I've always been drawn to the deep, dark colors. I think of how much better (using Spidey for an example) AS-M #23 would be with a green background. Or think of how much weaker the classic A S-M #15 cover would look if Kraven was charging at Spidey with a white background, instead of the dark blue, which really conveys the nighttime feel. It feels strange to be sitting here wasting time writing about background colors on 50-60 year-old comic books, that whoever made the coloring decision probably didn't spend 5 seconds on, but man, we do love the stuff, don't we...?? -
It was the X-Men #94 cover, but everything else is correct.

What are your favorite blue covers?
hippiecop replied to Robot Man's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Paging Cat Man: I love the blue colors you guys are rocking, but the Cat Man puns posted with his covers make it so much more fun...!!!! -
Grapeape, you are becoming one of my favorite reads here on the OA forum ! Keep up the interesting, well thought-out, and humorous posts !!

You know, you're right. I just assumed it was taken from the corner box, but the "head" corner box was used into the early 40s issues. That image wasn't used in the corner until after Ditko left the book. I guess the mystery will remain. (Unless the currently unknown Annual #2 cover ever surfaces...)
-
Yeah. I've always been certain that it's just a stat "mash-up" of images from the previous issues' panels, but always been too lazy to look 'em up...
