Brave & Bold #28: Speculation on future pricing
AlexanderM replied to accessndx's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
Thanks. FYI, I'm not a dealer, not even close. I got this book probably 20+ years ago. It came from a collection in Canada. I got quite a few books from this collection and most have similar characteristics. Technically they didn't grade uber high but very fresh with White Pages. Sometimes it pays to be a long time buy and hold collector. My bad, not sure where I got that from! In any case, it must have been quite the collection! This is my favorite cover of all time and your copy is frickin pristine! Hard to believe it is only a 7.5! It is also my favorite cover. I really also like AF15. And FF1 is also good and iconic imo. And then I had another more undervalued book than those three that I really really like the cover to too: Showcase 34! But yeah... If I had to absolutely pick one it would be BB28. -

This one... was just a bit too much... hehehe But ok ..maybe it's good I don't have it. I might just be staring at it all day long... and having it with me everywhere. -

Thank you ! If you only look at labels, my book is a 7.5 . However, if you look at the book, it is a very fresh looking copy with White Pages. Very clean. Put it away... I love to see people's comics... but this one is just too much... I have a soft spot for BB28... and then a book as good looking as that... It's almost unbearable... -

maybe....maybe not... I can hear the collective groans of the people who were hoping to score one of the many copies at auction right now as they read you saying this. Several to choose from in the next month. The 5.5 at HA, a 4.0 and 6.5 at CL and a higher grade but toasty looking 7.5 at CC. I really like the 3.5 comics4less has ending on ebay this weekend. Solid looking book for the grade. Yes, I'm following that 3.5 too. Looks really nice for the grade. -
What in the? This makes the Lizard from ASM movie look good. What is the budget for this movie? 100 mil? I really wished the Internet wouldn't leak small tidbits of information and photos. I am sure he will look better in the film and this image we are seeing is not the final version. It is likely a moment during his transformation from human to the full Killer croc. Truly let's hope so

+1 -J. +1 Yes, just looking at GPA90 or more might not get the job done with all those green arrows. -

Silver age comics that are heating up
AlexanderM replied to rabidwolf's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
And that money won't get any of the BB25's for sale on Ebay currently. Prices have really shot up on that one.... I guess it's also pretty scarce? 63 graded copies of BB 25. 405 graded copies of BB 54. Yes, but in all fairness 54 has been hyped for much longer, so I guess we should expect more copies of 25 to come forth now... or it is just a tough book? Logic would have that since it's an older book, from a much less used set of characters... that it will not have been preserved in nearly as many copies. And the CGC numbers confirm that. Still - I am a bit surprised that it has risen that quickly..? I think BB25 has peaked. Even with the much higher census numbers, I think BB54 has more potential. Just a reminder that the Teen Titans don't appear until B&B 60. True but 54 is still important as it is the origin story of TT. -

I like 111 but 126 for sure!

Yes, those are the three big ones: 110, 115, and 169. First appearance, first origin, and first in own title. But yeah, when those three become out of reach others will also start to get picked up.

If you start to explain why you completely disagree, I think then you will realise that the Justice League of America and the Justice League Society of America are similar. I just did above. -

I completely disagree that JSA (Spectre etc.) is as similar to JLA (Superman and Batman) as Flash SA is to Flash GA. For example, which superpower defines the JSA? Not the same as define JLA... JLA notoriously has Superman etc. Which superpower defines Flash and the Flash? Speed..... and if they didn't like the sound of JSA... why did they bring JSA back in JLA21..... Sorry, I understand the love for SC4, but the basic concept of the Flash with those particular superpowers etc was already made when the SC4 was published. -

I think BB28 is a huge book, but JLA isn't the first Silver Age appearance of a team. That distinction would belong to Challengers of the Unknown, which predates BB28 by 3 years. Jack Kirby has said that he borrowed elements from Challengers when he created the FF, so one could argue that Challengers has more nexus with FF than JLA. Also, if your view is that SC4 is not the first appearance of the Flash -- or that SC4 is a "false 1st appearance," to borrow your phrase) -- then isn't BB28 really another "false 1st appearance"? Wouldn't JLA be a Silver Age reboot and then-modernization of the JSA? The first JSA line-up and first JLA line-up share Flash and Green Lantern, albeit from different Ages of those characters, and later JSA line-ups had Wonder Woman, Bats and Supes. Come one mate... JLA is it's own team..Otherwise FF is a copy of JLA and so on. Which is not the case. Many comics historians agree that the success of JLA inspired and motivated Marvel to go ahead with FF and other teams. I never said JLA was the first SA team. It said BB28 is the real first appearance of a team (JLA) - as opposed to SC4 which is merely an incarnation of a new person being an already introduced superhero - The Flash. Anyway, Challengers of the unknown was a bit earlier but not nearly as successful and was not the reason Marvel took the leap. This is fairly agreed upon. The first Super-hero team was Shield & Wizard. The first team of 3 or more is obviously JSA, but neither inspired Marvel in the particular situation they were in at the time. It is fairly agreed historically that the success of JLA did. Flash - runs fast etc. The Flash is the Flash - the same basic super-hero concept; and it is clear that DC reintoduced the Flash... that is the claim to starting the SA. So it would be tricky to claim it is an entirely different and new super-hero. No cake and eat it too I'm afraid -
Dormamu would be the perfect villain for the movie.

I agree. I think BB28 will pass SC4. But will be interesting to watch. I, on the other hand, do not think BB28 will surpass SC4. It might close the gap between the two books in terms of value when the movie gets closer, but I think SC4 will be priced higher at the same time. SC4 has a few things going for it to make it the top SA DC book. First, it was the book that started the SA era. Second, it is the first appearance of a major superhero. Third, it is rare to find this book in any grade than BB28. These are some if not all the factors BB28 lack. It is like saying AV1 will surpass AF15, Hulk 1, TOS39, JIM83, etc. which I don't think it will also. AV1 is a newer book and does not have the historical significance at all that BB28 has. A better comparison is FF1. BB28 is by many accounts the reason there even is an FF1. The historical significance of BB28 is huge and it is a real first appearance of a team. SC4 is not the first appearance of the Flash... it is 'just' the first appearance in X age (here silver age)... I really like SC4 for the great cover (up there with BB28 and SC34 imo) and it has some historical significance for perhaps (it's debatable) starting the SA with the return of the Flash. But I must say that these 'false 1st appearances' that are only first in x age - are not the same as the real first appearances. -

Completely agree. Only slight correction I would do would be " ...are incredible, perhaps slightly above Hawkman covers even. I've seen ..." (thumbs u And especially SC34... I like many of the other ones too... like Atom 7, 40, and 42! But even among the many other great ones... I do think SC34 stands out. And I also agree that Thor has some great covers as well as Spider-Man.. but also Some Fantastic Four's and JLAs (especially the early SA JLA's are great imo).
-
Yes, I can easily see that happening too. And I could see it go up from there too in years to come. But then again I think Atom is one of the most interesting and deep super-heroes that DC has. And that cover is one of the top ones in the hobby as far as I'm concerned. So anyway - but will super-interesting to see where this beautiful 9.2 ends. Not many SC34 9.2 or above have been for sale the last decade.
-
I think at least 5k but could go way higher. Not a lot of data to go on. That being said the owner picked a pretty good time to sell the book I think. Looks 9.0ish to me. Maybe, but not everyone bidding on it will be looking at the book. I'm happy with my 7.5, bought with hard work and bottle returns. I have a 7.5 too (thumbs u I wanted to upgrade, but with Atom getting series time, and talk of his own series... it's probably impossible now. Btw. just looked at GPA. The book is pretty scarce so not a lot of data in any grade. However for example in 6.0 prices have doubled from 2013 to now. And there are no 9.2s on record. There are a couple of 9.4 sales for 9K + but from 2004 and 2005! Today prices I think would be much much higher on those. I more and more think the 9.2 will head towards 9K maybe more.
-
Sweet kimik! I love copies in this grade, especially when they look that good. None on GPA, but look at those 9.4's, wow! Definitely a good bet it ends somewhere between $4 - 6k, but who knows with the new TV show that was announced. SC34 is really rare in HG with that beautiful orange cover... I'm thinking it will be had for 7-9K.

Wow - that Showcase 34 is lovely
