It was a weird time to collect. I remember showing somebody a Wrightson illustration I bought for 75 bucks from Badtime Stories, they couldn’t understand that it was the artwork from the book. They knew comics of course they had some, but they didn’t understand that the pages were actually drawn/existed in real life. I remember people telling me that they knew artists who could draw stuff for me much cheaper, the idea that this was the published art the pages were based on shocked them. With no Internet, and conventions being somewhat rare annual events, you really were on an island if you collected art.

I promise you I would be fine with this. I was buying art in 1986-1987 when I was 9, back when I was the only person I knew who collected it. I didn’t meet another engaged collector of comic art till 1990-1991. In that time I had tons of 5-10 dollar pages I kept in an old folder style art portfolio. After nearly 40 years I still love this stuff. I don’t share my collection now except for like 2 pieces I bought publicly, so sharing it means little to me.

I’d be ok with this.

I always imagine he had some tie to biblical times. Someone once said he was Judas or Longinus and this was his penance, wandering til the end time trying to keep order and prevent chaos
-
I was always under the impression Kubert did the cover.

I like that, at least in this photo, most of the artwork seems pretty stable and non faded. This looks like something special.

San Mateo Comic Art, I remember that.

I just arrived with a friend who wanted to carpool from Ohio. Gonna eat at their little restaurant tonight. It’s sort of a ritual before the show might just be us too but usually we pick up one or two people just hanging out who happened to be here the night before

I've gone pretty consistently for the last 12 years, I missed the last one but I think I'm gonna make the trip out again this year.

I have a friend who basically lives now on SS and his meager savings. He never married (but did have what could be considered a common law wife) or have children. He spent his life acquiring comic art. He has some absolutely beautiful covers and pages on his walls. I asked him once why he didn't just sell all of his art and live out his last days in greater comfort. He told me that these pieces of art were in a weird way like his children, he has loved and cherished them for most of his adult life and still finds them fascinating and special.

The only time I went to SDCC was in 1996 or 97 (one of the two). I flew in and hung out with Bob Burden for a while. He introduced me to Moebius and Randy (his manager/translator/publisher/everything at the time). We three had sandwiches and talked about collecting art. I bought a bunch of art from Incal and Surfer off him and he did some sketches/ signed stuff. He was a very nice man. After that I never felt like I needed to go back, I accomplished all I had hoped to in that one trip.

I think in the last 35+ years of this goofy business I’ve paid for exactly two commissions, both inking/backgrounds on pencil pieces by the original artists (sometime around 1999). I just don’t get commissions beyond stuff like that. I’ve toyed with the idea of paying for sketch card commissions on licensed Topps or UD blanks, but for larger pieces I just never understood the appeal.

When You See a Piece For Sale From Someone You Won't Buy From...
zhamlau replied to Dr. Balls's topic in Original Comic Art
They're talking about Bechara Maalouf at Nostalgic Investments, I don't have any major issues in dealing with him beyond like one or two quibbles. Ill probably buy something off him in Summer at NJ. -
See this was already published before though. I’m talking about finished but never published material like the OP showed. I’d love to see them do that .

See i would have thought that issue settled since they paid originally to have the artwork drawn using their IP, especially now that they settled with the Ditko estate as many have reported. Think about how many guys would have to buy this comic just to say their Ditko Spider-man cover collection was complete! LOL could probably sell 5k to them alone!
