  1. When does the character "Kamala Khan" first appear? Provide evidence that it is in any book OTHER than ANMNPO#1. The writer explicitly stated that she was intentionally placed in issue 14. http://1979semifinalist.podomatic.com/entry/2013-11-18T01_13_14-08_00 Start listening at 1:37:30 I get it - the first cameo. Not a problem. I don't get the 1st unnamed non-speaking background cameo > 1st named/costumed/full appearance thing. But like I said, the market is fickle and irrational. If the writer has to after-the-fact explain who the person in the background is, then it's not much of a significant appearance at all, IMO. 2 The facts are the facts. Individual collectors will have to decide what is most important to them. The big argument arises from people that are looking to sell books making the case for the particular book that they are looking to sell.
  2. 'fess up; who else is checking to see if any of that isn't actually drek. Who those, those Impact comics could see renewed interest if the Archie reboot takes off.
  3. Yours is the only issue that seems to have ended anywhere north of a few bucks (9.8 slabs excluded). What offer did you actuallyaccept for it? I imagine that any interest in this is a result of the first issue of Battleworld?
  4. I'm pretty sure that's the first issue of X-Factor I ever got when I started reading. Maybe not my first X-book though.
  5. Even after it was selling for $20 on eBay, I was still able to find some on the shelf last Sunday (but they were gone by Monday).
  6. When a character or event is depicted on a cover, but not in the actual story inside the book, do we consider it as "happening"? It's an old marketing ploy you used to see more often. I've never considered an image of a character on a cover an appearance in said book if he/she did not actually appear in the story inside. Add to that a publisher retroactively placing it on a second print cover, and the notion of any appearance - much less first appearance - becomes even more spurious. What we have here is the same situation as Marvel Age #97 and Darkhawk #1. Marve Age 97 features Darkhawk on the cover, and is a nice collectible for Darkhawk fans, but he's not on the inside. Thus, Darkhhawk #1 (not Marvel Age 97) is considered his 1st appearance. Rarely is there a first appearance debate that has a predecent with very similar details, and that holds true here too. First off, Marvel Age was a news magazine, not a comic book, regardless of whether it was the same size. Second, Ms. Marvel does appear in the interior of CM #17 2nd print, and she also has two appearances in-story published prior to that, regardless of how minor the appearance is.

  8. Apparently not. If you thought the Ms. Marvel hype had died down, this sat at $510 for about 2-3 days, then boom. Captain Marvel #17 2nd Print - 5 copies I smell something fishy with that auction. Winning bidder had 62% activity with that seller and 8 bid retractions in 6 months. cough cough cough SHILL!!! Wow, I did not even notice that! They have a high rating, wonder if there is some bartering going on. Bid it up, retract, then offer a second chance to the next guy. These kind of shenanigans drive me nuts and are the main reason I avoid eBay auctions if I can help it. Even if it was, that book sells consistently for around that price. Crazy times. On average a NM copy will go for the average price of each of those issues, but I can't see there being that many buyers at that total for 5 copies in that condition. At least right now.
  9. $200 is a fair price to get off of Staten Island. To get there, not so much.
  10. Considering this was said in an interview, where certainly KSD didn't have the reading material in front of her, I think it makes perfect sense to say "background"; KK isn't part of the main action in that issue, so thematically she's in the background. As for the visual, sure, it doesn't look like KK in her own comic, but it's possible at that point that the artist didn't have much to go on; perhaps character design hadn't been completed by then. Or, we just recognize that artists have different styles. The two images below look like two different people as well.
  11. From my perspective, that's the worst argument yet... Referring to the source material... good start (thumbs u However, when that source material is already in question, further evidence is required. Forming opinions unsupported by key references is not research. I like this, from the link: Someone is new to comics collecting.
  12. Why does Iceman come with an Archangel card?
  13. This seems very suspect. Top Left corner has fraying which eliminates it from being a 10 Same thing with a Danger Girl variant I had a couple years ago, only that corner was worse than the ASM 4 here. I gave up on understanding the difference between 9.8, 9.9s and 10s. Jerome The difference is a few thousand bucks if you can find a buyer. But I agree, there's no REAL way guarantee beyond a 9.8+ I think it's just the whim of whoever is grading your book. I submitted a book that I could find absolutely no flaws with that I figured had a shot at a 9.9 or 10 and came back a 9.8
  14. People talking fondly about Rai #0 are people that read the books. Some of the market is based on what people want and a larger part is based on what people think people want, which may explain the additional attention on EW #4.Traditionally it could probably be argued that cameo firsts were more sought after, but large factors in that are: • people went after Valiant first appearances back in the day the way people go after first appearances now, once a character has been announced to be in a movie • Valiant would often release news of a new series, but not where the character was first appearing • When the cameo dropped, people would hoard that first issue as soon as the news was out that the new character was in it, but the subsequent issue with the full, everyone had the chance to pre-order, so those that wanted them got them. Therefore, the cameo was the one people had to hunt for. It was never so much an issue of a cameo vs. a full, but rather an issue of who had the books that people wanted. After 20-25 years a lot of those issues have gotten into the hands of the people that wanted them
  15. Same here. I bid and won a few every now and then when the slabs were on ebay. Even then it appeared that CGC's grading was rather loose on many books. Now that they have moved to raw stuff I rarely find anything that looks accurately graded. I am sure that the reason why dealers like Sparkle City Comics grade so loosely is because they are well known for buying pedigree collections, they are Overstreet advisors and so on.....so "green" collectors associate dealers like Sparkle City as being authorities in the field . Consequently, Sparkle City know they can get away with ridiculously liberal grading standards. There are a couple other big name dealers / Overstreet advisors who pull the same sort of tricks, with selling overgraded raw comics on eBay......green collectors will pay higher prices from these sorts of dealers because green collectors are duped into paying a premium for the dealer's status in the hobby and being able to say" I bought this from Sparkle City Comics" This Avengers 196 looks like an 8.0 to an 8.5, just by eyeballing the pics. 2 transverse spine tics Oxidation staining on BC Wear on BC along upper left edge Not only do they know how to grade, they also know how to accurately describe a book's edition.. Such as the examples below: Dazzler #1 Newsstand #1 Dazzler #1 Newsstand #2 Maybe these are the only 2 known newsstand copies in existence? Hmmmm… if called on their BS, I imagine that they will defend the listing description by saying that "Newsstand Fresh" is mean to convey that it is brand new, not that it's an edition that doesn't exist.
  16. These are actually still available for cover -15% off on Midtown. It's funny that some of the incentive variants have lower results than the A covers. for whatever reason I look at the 1A covers as being more 'pure' than variants...a 1A is what you'd find on a spinner rack in the 60s or 70s. I prefer the 1A art as well. Actually, a complete set of either all A or all B covers would look nice together.
  17. Yeah, but there's only one 7.5 purple label!

  19. I loved Static and many of the other Milestone books when they came out. Not enough to pay a premium for them, perhaps, but then, I bought them all from the beginning. I did manage to grab a platinum within the last few years.
  20. For what it's worth, on the latest issue of Unity with the Valiant 25th anniversary variant cover, it notes that Livewire was established in 1993. But as with some other characters, there are significant differences in the old and new characters. So you're looking at potentially two keys. Three, perhaps, if you consider her appearance in #15 of the original series as a cameo, which it pretty much is. She's in action in the next issue. I may have to pick up Harbinger (V1) #16! Thanks! If you're looking to collect first appearances, you're probably best off picking up 15 & 16. I've never seen anyone else mention that her appearance in 15 is a cameo, but that's my take based on recently re-reading the issue. (#15 is Stronghold's first full appearance, anyway – he has a final page cameo in 14 – and he does play a role in the current books, but not a huge one yet, so 15 is still key.) Either way, 16 is her first cover appearance.

  22. I have several high-grade copies, but this one is the most interesting one I own (won in a raffle along with other items):
  23. That's crazy. There was a stack of those on the shelf at my store Thursday. I'll check it out when I pop back in this weekend.
  24. first appearance and death of Negasonic Teenage Wasteland. BiIN under $20.00 http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-X-Men-114-115-116-E-is-for-Extinction-1st-Negasonic-Teenage-Warhead-/281666937676?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4194a8634c The listing that Geeks posted ended March 31st during the height of the Negasonic Teenage Warhead craze. Ah. Temporary movie spike.
  25. Can someone explain this? I know it's a few months old, but I just saw this today: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Marvel-NEW-X-MEN-114-115-116-E-IS-FOR-EXTINCTION-MORRISON-QUIETLY-Strict-VF-NM-/331513200793?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d2fba0099&nma=true&si=XsalhEQxaF7l%252FP%252FcRxYTbsRLKcg%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
