I’d vote X-Men. -
Who is the greatest living comic book artist?
Andahaion replied to Peter L's topic in Original Comic Art
Jorge Jimenez is a digital artist who has caught my eye. Almost bought one of his monoprints…almost. -
Every year I try very hard to get through all the categories. I always lose steam, and it appears I will fall short again.

Who is the greatest living comic book artist?
Andahaion replied to Peter L's topic in Original Comic Art
Difficult to say absent some sort of criteria. Miller came to my mind first, but artists like Byrne should likely be in the discussion (again, really depends how you define ‘greatest’). I also really love Lee, but that’s maybe more my personal preference. -
It always amazed me that he was able to essentially own the title of 'painter of light'. Especially since any painter since the dawn of time that paints in a realistic fashion/tradition is mainly concerned with the effect of light on form. Was very odd to me how people gave that over to him, or how he was able to market his way into such a position.

All I know is I asked his rep when the Absolute Superman art went on sale what the medium was, and she confirmed with me that "these are indeed original pages, pen/ink/greys." I passed because, to me and my eye, many of the effects read as digital. That cover Twanj posted is a good example. That blurry effect looks digital to me. Also to clarify, I'm fine if an artist uses digital as part of the process. I just want to know.

What are your 2024 OA Collecting Goals?
Andahaion replied to batman_fan's topic in Original Comic Art
I didn’t record a goal, but had intentions of being more selective. Looking back through my CAF, it seems I bought only two pieces this year (so ‘mission accomplished’ I suppose). But I did check off a major ‘want’ by securing a really lovely Joelle Jones Wonder Woman piece. So that was a huge win. Been after a nice original from her for a number of years. -
Black Mirror is one of my favorite Batman stories. Jock has an ability to use interesting panel layouts to tell a story. I think one may not need any text balloons to understand what this scene is about. Love how the panels frame the main subject. And the use of light and dark via the 'shadow of the Bat' to highlight the clue...really strong.

Yes, that's been happening for me. It's really odd...like the site is reloading as fast as it can. Seems ok today. *shrug*

I’m really looking forward to getting into it when I return home from a work trip. They had a really nice event here in NYC at Mid Town with the creators. I couldn’t get away to participate, but reviews seem to be generally positive and there is excitement, which is always fun in this hobby. But who knows if this will continue. EDIT: Just read it. I’m excited.

I love that movie. Haven't seen it in years, but watched it a lot growing up...all the Grant flicks, actually. Father Goose, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dreamhouse, Operation Petticoat, Bringing Up Baby...so many good ones. I'd love to find a way to see that new-ish series on BritBox or something...about Grant's later years I believe.

I do try to live this way. It can be a challenge at times, but I prefer this mentality to something else.

Caught this with the family today. I was blown away. Loved it. Surpassed my expectations.

Just a quick plug for Phantom Restoration. He helped me with a really nice overlay to a Final Crisis cover by Carlos Pacheco. Here's a link where you can see the naked art and the overlay under the 'Additional Images': https://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1810758

Jim apparently has already started with the restoration. These two screen grabs from his Facebook feed show work done in the top left background. Here is a before and after.

I started the same time as you. I think it's definitely going to depend on the artist and the book/character. I'd say that some pieces are worth it and some not, but I've certainly seen an uptick in new cover pricing (generally speaking). It's fairly subjective, difficult to really comment without an example.
-
For sure. It was just an observation that, like I said, likely doesn't mean anything other than the observation itself.
-
This observation is only cursory and may not mean anything, but I'm always intrigued by the number of trackers that comics and comic art lots receive. This is really only in comparison to other things that I collect and may track at HA; things I pay attention to. For instance, there's a signed first edition of The Hobbit with 126 trackers in the English and American Literature auction. In the Japanese woodblock print auction, those lots are topping out at about 10 each. And in this comic/OA auction, the highest tracked item is something I've no idea about; a Lee Elias Black Cat Comics #50 cover art with 475 trackers. Again, not sure that means anything, but when the question is posed about OA costing too much I tend to look at things like the above and can't deny that there is (or appears) to be a lot of demand and interest in this stuff and I would guess there's an impact on price. But I'm just an internet post.

I didn’t intend any malice or ill will, apologies if you were offended. To this point I didn’t mention you or the page, and tried to keep it generic enough to just convey my perspective. Negotiating online can be difficult/challenging. I wish when I made an offer based on what I honestly believed to be the selling price from last December that I had a better understanding of all the fees (i.e., credit card fees, tax, shipping, etc). If you’re all in is actually closer to $4700-$4800 then I would have likely offered closer to $6k; and then maybe going over the top of the $6k offer you had. My thinking was really nothing more than trying to give a seller a grand more on a piece that sold five months ago (based on my understanding). That’s all. Then again, I can also see how you may have quickly dismissed my offer (and not gotten into the details) as perhaps a ‘lowball’ offer, which maybe it was. But again, that was not my intent. Thank you.
-
Pretty event for me this time. Made an offer that was a (what I thought) fair percent above what the piece sold for at auction last year. Was told that was a lull in the market and prices have “stabilized”. Which in this example meant about a 55% increase over said auction result. Who knows. Maybe. I wished him well and moved on. Sunday’s drop was very disappointing from where I sit. Onward and upward.

Yep, stickers for me too.

Aside from being born two years before you, this is pretty much my story. I have some gaps in my reading, so I'm always buying trades of those missed stories. But I certainly do read books from all eras. I agree there are good stories being told today. I tend to wait until trades are released as I prefer to read entire stories/arcs at the same time, so I'm usually months/years behind everyone else. And for OA...I don't have a ton of pages, but from what I've bought so far seems to be definitely favoring modern artists/stories.
