  1. I am thinking of making a purchase of a 9.6 book, where the grader's notes reference 'very light spine stress lines'. Having consulted the CGC Guide, I couldn't find any definitive answer to whether or not this description is applied to colour-breaking and/or non colour-breaking stress lines. The pictures don't appear to show anything colour-breaking, hence the book might be suitable for CPR. I wondered if others have any solid insights as to when CGC uses this particular phrase. Many thanks. Paul
  2. Thank you. Really appreciate your thoughts. I think I'll wait for a better copy, as suggested.
  3. No, I am not thinking about deepening my complexion : ) I am thinking of pulling the trigger on a 9.6 book from the 70s, at around current FMV. The grader's notes indicate 'light tanning' on the back (largely white) cover. 1. What exactly is tanning? And to what extent is it frowned upon the the collecting community? Would you typically be willing to buy a book at FMV with light tanning? 2. The other graders note indicate 'light spine stress lines to cover'. Does CGC specifically denote if the stress lines break colour, or is the phrase used universally for non-colour breaking and colour breaking lines? Very much appreciate any advice. Cheers.
  4. However, a Ferris Bueller reference does score a lot of points with me
  5. I am really disappointed you guys are not getting the point. I thought the CGC Boards attracted experts. I can't even get a straitforward anser to such a pithy and concise question. I think I'll go elsewhere... Sheesshhh
  6. Hi all, Really appreciate any thoughts you have on this issue. The pictures are of an encased Hell Arisen #3 graded at 9.8 It looks as one might expect other than this spine wear or spine burn. Should this type of damage preclude it from 9.8 I am trying to determine what it is and if it is a slabbing or post slabbing problem, or simply an acceptable attribute that does not impact grade. I see something similar on quite a few modern books albeit not so pronounced, so would be great to know the grading implications. Many thanks.
  7. OK. Thank you. I don't often venture out of the Newbie or WTB categories!

  9. I see this on quite a lot of Marvel books. Does CGC treat this a production defect, or does it knock down the grade? It's a brand new book, so I assume it must be a production issue relating to Marvel's interesting choice of paper for its covers. Any other thoughts about these types of defects would be much appreciated. I want to fill a hole in my knowledge bank!
  10. Thanks - much appreciated. I now have four phases to wrestle with
  11. I have spent the last year getting more familiar with different types of defects. One area I am a little unclear about is the spine. I have come across terms like: Spine burn Feathering Spine wear Not sure that I fully understand the differences, whether they are interchangeable terms, or how they impact on grading. By way of example, here is a brand new Marvel book. Can any expert heads enlighten me please! Thanks in advance.
  12. Hi, I have a CGC 9.6. On an otherwise tight book, I see a tiny corner crease on bottom right. Is this OK for a 9.6 or might this be post-slabbing damage? Grateful for all informed advice? Many thanks.
  13. Hi all, I received a minimal dress and trade dress Momoko Variant for Batman Adventures #2 from Forbidden Planet this week. On receiving them both I immediately noticed that the inner pages were protruding 5-6mm beyond the card stock cover. What is this type of flaw called and what impact does it have on grade? I assume this must be a production error of some sort. Other than this the books are in great shape. It does have a first appearance in it, so wondering if it would be best to replace? Thanks for any thoughts
  14. Hi there. Yes, has happened to me twice too. I emailed CGC and they were quick to send me the missing notes each time. Best of luck!
  15. Hi there, I am making my first direct submission to CGC (rather than through my LCS). I have a quick but important question to ask about determining the value of the book and choosing the correct tier of service (and associated cost). Do I determine the value based on the raw price of the book, or its graded value by estimating the potential grade? For example, I have a Venom 3 3rd print (Knull Cover). It looks in pristine condition, and I am hoping for a 9.8 after a press. GoCollect values it at $825 in a 9.8, but its raw value will be considerably less. What will CGC expect me to do in terms of choosing a tier? Many thanks

  17. So, an update. I think it is important to give credit where credit is due. I followed this advice (many thanks by the way) and today had a conversation with a lovely lady named Rebecca Bonacci from CGC. She could not have been nicer or fairer in the way she dealt with the case. I was offered viable options and finally agreed on a way forward that has 'great customer service' right at the heart of it. Thanks for your help on here and thanks to CGC
  18. Nothing like a bit of sarcasm for someone in financial pain. Always a helpful form of communication I find : ) To wrap up any confusion, the only two flaws are the tiny ones I mentioned. The larger areas that look like damage are actually part of the design- e.g. the 'damaged poster look that 'I mentioned in the original post. I have other books with exactly the same back cover advertisement. I wouldn't have posted the question if all of those white marks were actual damage. I'm a bit of a newbie, but not completely deluded! Nevertheless, I think I now get that even those two small defects are enough to say goodbye to 9.8...
  19. Hi, I am seeking some advice as to what to do about a hugely disappointing CGC experience. Sent in (via my LCS) a ASM 800 1:200 for pressing as a 9.8 candidate. Came back as a 9.6, with small broken pieces of plastic encapsulated in the slab - albeit my slab looks undamaged? I sent it back via my LCS and who got a message from CGC saying they are not keen to open the slab as it will no longer be a 9.6 if regraded! Whatever damage apparently happened (can't actually see any) must have happened in transit or at CGC - in either event, due to having to send it back due to the plastic. CGC offered no apology, no explanation, no offer to put anything right. My LCS got in contact with them about the experience and got no reply. Once I got the book back, I contacted CGC about turning a $200+ book (plus cost of pressing/grading/courier costs x 2) into something I can never sell with any integrity. Message sent in three weeks ago, not even the courtesy of an acknowledgement since then. What next? Or is it just a case of 'suck it up' and move on?
