Now that you put it that way, I have noticed that on some very high grade examples of Silver Age books - again usually with very light colored covers. I do know what that effect that you are describing looks like.

To the OP, if that is what you are describing, there is never any negative effect on grade as a result of that effect. My TTA 59 was like that. Thanks for posting ADAMANTIUM. I didn't mean to muddy the waters.

Personally I would want a book that you can not see through, so I would think it would decrease the value. Besides the obvious that it distracts you from the art of the cover/book itself and if the ultra clean theory is correct I would think that that cleaning weakens the integrity of the book itself. Think of it like going from a 1000 thread count bed sheet to a piece of thin white linen that you can see through...

I know what you mean, I've seen those occasionally as well.  I hope someone corrects me if I am wrong but I think that has something to do with the book being pressed and cleaned.  Completely okay by CGC who run their own pressing service.  So it just comes down to personal taste.  Some people are looking for white pages while others don't care.  Some want a perfectly centered book & others just tap it to get it back in place.  You get it.

Anyways, I doubt many sellers will be willing to lower the price that much due to the issue you're describing.

Thanks!  Your point about pressing/cleaning is interesting.

It's not really a red flag because most sellers I've seen state that in the sale desc.  I thought I read a few with the reason why that's the case, something to do with a third party grading the book or what not, I can't remember.  I'm just guessing they got burned by too many people who got buyer's remorse in a market with alot of arbitrary prices at times.

Still I'm a little annoyed the seller wasn't up front with that dent, now that is a little shady.  You should still contact them about it and see if they are willing to refund tho, your case sounds reasonable.

Thanks for the support.  I emailed him and he wouldn't accept a return so I asked eBay for a refund.  Fingers crossed...

Actually, I don't like the looks of this book in the slab. Notice how the top edge of the cover is above the interior pages AND the interior pages are protruding below the bottom edge. This indicates the cover is 'sticking' to the inner well while the rest of the book is sliding down from gravity. This puts pressure on the top staple. IMO, you should send this book back. The following thread references this situation somewhere in the conversation.....

Sounds like I have a lot to learn... The seller doesn’t accept returns which should have been a red flag I guess... it might be worth a shot though to email them.

The 9.8 grade does NOT take into account the eye appeal of the book. A book can have a horrible miswrap, or a dangling corner chip, many things that most of us would consider not acceptable but CGC allows it in 9.8 . I agree that a 9.8 book should look perfect to the naked eye but it's simply not so. All 9.8's are not created equal. Next time look at the book closely before buying ! :baiting:

Looks great other than that haha

I agree, this should NOT be a 9.8 . It's possible CGC considered it bindery and let it go or they just plain missed it or it got damaged in the encapsulation room. I have to ask, how did you miss this when buying it ? It's painfully, in your face obvious.

Like the Tread Topic says, I’m a newbi. I thought paying a perimuim on cgc 9.8 I wouldn’t have to look over the book too closely (like I said live and learn). As for CGC missing it, I doubt it. It was the first thing I noticed when I received it. The seller on eBay should have noted it but he did not but he did have a picture of the book. You have to zoom in very close to see it though (the picture I posted), I didn’t think I had to do such a thing on cgc 9.8. :-(

Taken directly from ComicConnect's site (see Toolbar in upper right corner on the CC site under "Auction" then "Info" for more)

What makes ComicConnect's Auctions different than other online auctions?

ComicConnect wants our online auction experience to be as close to a live auction as possible.  Therefore:

Any new bid placed during the final 3 minutes of a given auction lot will extend the lot's end-time in an increment of 3 minutes from the time the bid was placed. For example, if an auction lot that is scheduled to end at 8:10 PM receives a new bid at 8:09 PM, the lot's end time will extend to 8:12 PM.  After a lot has not received any new bids for 3 minutes, the lot will end, hammering at the winning bid.

An auction lot that has not received any new bids before it ends will hammer at it's scheduled end time. For example an auction lot that is scheduled to end at 8:10 PM will not be extended, providing that no additional bids are placed after 8:07 PM.

Well damn now I just feel stupid for not reading the website haha. Thanks!

There's only been one sale on GPA in the past year and that was for $468.

There was also a 9.8 signed by Stan Lee that sold for $795 back in 2017.

so yes, $750 is too much unless it's a signature series.

Cool, thanks! I just started collecting again after about 30 years and $750 was what someone was asking.  That being said what's GPA haha?

  9. I just bought this on eBay (note the archival paper hang out of two ends).  Maybe I should re-list this as an error and ask for triple the price? Just joking.  How common is archival paper hang outside the comic in a CGC graded slab?  On a similar note, the seller did not disclose this to me (they used a stock photo of the comic which I didn't notice until after the fact) and I am a little upset about it.  Should I be or is this a normal risk?
