OA Boardies, explain your usernames...
dichotomy replied to exitmusicblue's topic in Original Comic Art
It’s not hiding - everyone knows that real magic lies in true names and their meanings. That information has to be earned. I may be new to OCA collecting, but I’ve been dichotomy on the internet since before Al Gore invented it. -
From ME to MA, via !@#$%^&* Jersey... Expected Tuesday, so 3 days in unnecessary shipping limbo. WHY MATRIX WHY?!?!?!

Here is a rambling And honest post written on my phone early in the morning. Speaking honestly, if I had walked away with the McFarlane and the Quitely for 15k I would have been happy. For the McFarlane I was top bidder throughout but capped out at 13k, which I already thought was expensive, but not unreasonable. 19k is crazy, but makes me happy vis-à-vis my existing page, which I had always kept as reserve your one day bend @AnkurJ to my will in a trade 😜. 19k for Peter in civvies, although you do get a ”that’s what she said” joke in blue line that’s pretty funny. It’s a good page and everyone looks great, but 19k is a bit much. There are some pages in which, possibly because of the printing, MJ looks pretty beat. The Quitely I thought was excellent. EXCELLENT. Practically a recreation of the cover, beautiful detail throughout, lots of Superman. I can’t wait to see it in person. How often do these even come up? Even rarer than McSpidey I’d wager. Certainly not cheap, but definitely at par with a Good Mignola Jungle Adventure page. The right cover from All Star Superman (impossible to abbreviate into initials...) would be a grail for me, but I’ll definitely take this page as a hold-over. After I lost the McFarlane I upped my bid and put the phone away.

Update - art in hand - Paid Oct 21 and delivered Dec 07. Shipped with a hard board panel and tracking so two thumbs up there, and with an extra minor interior page as an apology for the delay. -

How do you transport your comic art to cons?

It looked bulkier so that’s why I decided to go with the itoya (as a very small person) -

Check online. I bought it from Utrecht but looking at the shipping it came from Blicks, who ironically said they were sold out on their website (for this size). Wacky e-commerce. -

The itoya carrier was delivered today. I’ve attached pics. It’s definitely a superior con bag just because it can hold so much art in many sizes very easily. I’m extremely happy with it. 3 fully loaded portfolios in any size from 17x22 or smaller will easily fit in this. I wish there were a carry handle on the long side. The handle on the short side is only useful if one is over 6’2” or so, which I am not. No claims to waterproofness, unfortunately, but otherwise simple and functional. Obviously, the drawback is that it cannot really hold anything other than art, so not good to double with clothes etc, like the Jim Lee. -
Are Comic Art Porn Commissions A Big Thing?

It was artists’ choice, but the artist did ask. Dr Manhattan is always an interpretation. 😜 -

Not seeking anything - I know I'll get the art eventually. I just want an open line of communication. And just letting others know what they might be getting into. -
Makes you think about all these galley edition and artists editions - it’s hard to fake OA if you’ve never seen the original, and only the final printed page. In the past, the edges of painting would not be widely photographed and circulated as a means of preserving authenticity. You can’t fake edges you’ve never seen. Probably why Kirby’s H&V Has been so widely copied. An earlier published example of OA pencil works.

I’ve ordered the itoya portfolio + tablet in the 18x24 - I’ll update when it’s here early Dec. the big question is - Summer Connor Winter con?!? 😂 Seriously speaking though, I loved the Jim Lee for the con - but you are limited to 11x17 or smaller. In that range though, you feel rock solid invulnerable with the art. -

Update - I heard back on Nov 13th (3 weeks+ since payment) with an apology and that they had been at a con, and that they would get this out to me asap. Two weeks later and still nothing. We are now at 5 weeks since payment. -

I got the Jim Lee Artist backpack and I gave it a major test at NYCC and it held up really well. For art 11x17 and under it is perfect. I brought back 8 piece easily. Very comfortable, though slightly heavy, at least you're not worried about your art. I've done a couple side trip with the bag without the interior portfolio and that gives you extra space and reduces the weight. The bag is sturdy but a bit thick, particularly noticeable when you're on the subway etc. In December I'm traveling and may have a couple portfolios with me including a 17 x 22 so I'll be looking at one of the shoulder options. -
Knock on wood - everything is on even keel. I use my own money and it is understood that I will provide adequately for the family. On the kids’ floor I started hanging commissions with the kids in them and used that as a gateway mechanism to very discretely intro OCA into some other areas. She is not disinterested, she simply doesn’t have the same level of interest. It is my thing. I’ll show her pieces I think she’ll enjoy and I’ve gifted her a few (Mindy Lee Catwoman and I commissioned an artist [the original] to reproduce her favorite book cover with her in it). One of the Vader and Daughter pieces hangs in our dressing room. And she definitely likes to hear about successful flips, even though I don’t sell often. She actually gifted me one of my first serious pieces of OA, and just today surprised me with some cushions for my ongoing den renovation. So overall I’m pretty lucky, and I definitely try to maintain boundaries. She also has no idea how much the Watchmen page hanging in my den cost. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.

I saw some of Nick’s inktober sketches thanks to @Ron C. and I was intrigued. I reached out with the idea of commissioning a series in the same vein. Nick was easy to work with (Instagram nickjustusart) and got these out to me in no time. I think they turned out great. 9x12. Also, how good is Watchmen on HBO! Damn! -
I’ve seen them before, not too long ago, but don’t remember where exactly, but I believe they were offered in a previous Hakes auction where presumably the reserve was not met.
-
Thought I’d share - I just sold a piece Yesterday, that I picked up from Heritage May 2018, for 150%. Pre-auction at the moment I’m seeing a couple similar opportunities.

Share a moment in comic history that struck you like lightning

I think the Elseworlds hit me at the right time - seeing familiar things differently was a great revelation. Gotham by Gaslight, Holy Terror, Red Son etc. Certainly The Killing Joke - surely you remember the first time You read it. The shot. And then he starts documenting it. And then it gets worse. Life altering stuff. Artistically - Arkham Asylum. I ordered it at great cost overseas sight unseen and that was a book you really had to work at. Each page was an hour long exploration. Also, Sink’s New Mutant run. Batman Year One also had some great moments for me - particularly because of how close to happiness Bruce gets. All of these were a great concert of writer and artist together that really got into my head. -
Aye Caramba! Thanks for the update. And yes indeed, if the buyer is open to communication I’d love an introduction. I’ll even adjust for inflation...
