Police # 2

From my understanding these were not "Timely" file copies but rather advertizers copies that were found. I too have some and have seen many. Most seem to be in the 7.0-8.5 range.
West
I have but one of these (the staple holes are visible in the following scan) - beautiful books with nice paper.
Not sure if West can answer this, but how would an 8.5 book with such staple holes grade out through CGC?
STEVE
I am also very curious about that. A beautiful book Steve.

Not a comic, but still very Timely!

Thanks everybody.
You guys are some great collectors! Showing my humble collection around here reminds me of a verse from an REM song, and a few scholars before them...
"Standing on the shoulders of giants, leaves me cold."
Quit being so humble. It is unbecoming........Heck, if you have one Timely that makes a great collection! You got a lot more than one. Brag a little! We will understand.

This should add about ten more pages of superlatives to this thread.
Can I make the first request for the next photo?
Silver Streaks (especially #6)
Great #3
Exciting #9
Thanks!

the only book i have that might get the bedrock seal of approval. mr bedrock sir, your books have been awesome!
That is an awesome copy, Mike. I love that cover. My copy is one of those with the staple holes at the top left. John Verzyl called them Marvel pay/file copies because a pay stub receipt was stapled there. I have never seen or had any verification of that. Regardless, yours is way better. (Wanna Trade?)

Exciting Comics #59
January 1948
Airbrush cover by Alex "Xela" Schomburg
This book has been high on my want-list ever since I saw a tiny b&w version years ago in some old Overstreet guide, but I never found a nice copy.
Well this showed up on Metropolis and I clicked the "Buy Now" button about 10 seconds later. 3 days from order to my doorstep and all is well -- thanks guys.
Airbrush cover and a fetching Judy of the Jungle story drawn by Frazetta
Shameless plug - this frees up a presentable VG+ undercopy, PM if you're interested
She looks like she's worth more than some sparkling beads. He's ripping that native off! Unless there is something going on that he hasn't disclosed.

Face front you comicbook geeks and Centaur afficionados!......As you may know, i do collect comicbook art and have tried to obtain GA recreations.....well take a gander!!!! It ain't Everett, but I am absolutely delighted. jon
Jon,
This is the first time I have looked through your gallery of cover recreations and they are awesome! But they bring to mind something maybe you can answer for me. In the late 70's C.C. Beck did a number of beautiful cover recreations. Burrel Rowe had a few of these that I got to see when I was working for him at Camelot ('77-'81). One in particular was a recreation of Captain Marvel 32. As you may remember that is the cover where a bunch of mole people are pulling Cap down a hole. This was a fully finished (maybe acryllic) piece on heavy art board, framed and hanging in Burrel's office. The only thing was Captain Marvel was painted completely nude. About the funniest thing I ever saw. Wondering if anyone knows where that painting is these days?

.
Bill, is that from your personal clip file?
Actually proud to say I don't own it at all! But I do remember it making the list of your favorite Timely covers quite recently...
No, Bill. My favorite was the cover with the actual insertion shot.

And finally....
Now that's a cover!
Now that's a cover!!!
Beautiful books. Gotta love those Timelys!
Okay. Who do I have to kill to get this book?
Coming from you I consider that the ultimate compliment!

Hey, dude, your stealing my thunder!
Now we are talking!

Okay, I'll stop now. Sorry if I took up too much space. Thanks for indulging me.
Don't worry, everyone loves Timelys. Why else would this thread get 10,000 hits in two weeks?
Stunning books, Mr. B! Keep 'em coming!
Thanks! Let's face it. Book in and book out, Timelys had the absolute best covers! They are perfect for a forum like this. I mean, while they are okay, who really wants to look at every issue of Action from 100 - 200? (I may be opening a big can of worms - but I doubt it!) But, other than maybe #79 just about every issue of Marvel Mystery is great!
I hear ya. Let's compare Marvel Mystery 100 - 200 against Action 100 - 200!
Oh yeah, I forgot, there were only 92 of them... Wonder why??
Cause after 1949 Americans lost all sense of taste and culture!
Actually....I think it had more to do with this...
Bill, is that from your personal clip file?

I can tell that under the Dectective 38 is a stack of Spawn #8, and under the Adventure 52 is a pile of Rai #4, but I can't tell what is under the More Fun 59. Are those Wildcat Trilogy #1 or Shadowhawk #2?

Got a Sub-Mariner #13, perchance?
Yes, but not handy, unfortunately. Soon though.

BTW, that Subby 8 is incredible. Must have skipped over that one in Gerber. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
You are very welcome! I have always been partial to the 6 and 11 myself.

This is still one of my favorite Fox covers.
Hey! I recognize that book. Did you slab the Fantastic 5? I still have the Science 2 from that collection.
Yes, 6.0! Thanks! All of those books have such great color and paper. Quite the find on your part. Thanks again.

It's a shame the guy who amassed the Allentown Collection didn't take better care of them!
I almost bought this book when Harley had it a decade ago. This book is KILLER and the scan does it no justice. NICE!
West
West;
Personally, I am glad you didn't pick this book up!
I ended up getting this book from Harley for a little less than 2X guide at a convention. Sold it a few years later in the big Manning auction and they was able to realize almost 7X for this book. Strongly doubt that Richard had to pay this kind of money for the book as I believe he picked it up subsequent to the auction.
Certainly can't complain about the money although I do believe it is the still the highest graded Fox book along with Mystery Men #13 which is also a NM+ 9.6 grade. I believe all other Fox books have graded out lower than this up to this point in time.
The funny thing is that Harley also had the Allentown WW #14 at the same time. I almost took the 14 over the 13 since I thought the pages were a bit stronger. Probably should have picked up both books since Harley told me just to take the books and pay him later when I got back home. Turns out the WW #14 only graded out as a VF 8.0. Shows you what I know about grading, unless there was some damage done to the book in the interim.
I actually got it in a part cash/mostly trade deal at San Diego last year for about 4X.
