  1. Yup, the Stardust story in Fantastic #6 is NOT by Hanks. You are also correct that Fantomah begins in Jungle #2. I think that Hanks did that Tabu story in Jungle #1. Can someone (Jon B.) verify this? thanks, -P.
  2. My incomplete Hanks checklist looks like this: Fantastic Comics 1-16 "Stardust" Fantastic Comics 1,3,4,5,6,8 "Space Smith" (some only appear to be partially drawn by Hanks) Fantastic 6 "Yank Wilson" Jungle 1-15 "Fantomah" Planet 2-6 & 8 "Buzz Crandall" Fight 1-8 "Big Red McLane" Daring Mystery 4 & 5 "Whirlwind Carter" Big Three 2 - "Stardust" I think that Hanks only did one Tabu story in Jungle #1, but I am not sure. Any help? Also, can someone help me with this "K-51" character? He (or it) has evaded my radar. thanks, -Paul P.S. I just got another blurb for the back of my Hanks book from Kurt (I-Kid-You-Not) Vonnegut!
  3. ...wait. I'm confused...are there two Jons on this board? I had not planned to run a full index of the Hanks tales, but now that you mention it, perhaps I should try to include one. I would have to get some help putting it together, though, and this might be the right place to ask. I am looking forward to the K-51 story, thanks. Best, -Paul
  4. Hi Point Five, Could you please send me a sample page of the K-51 story or post it on this board? As I said, in preparing my Hanks collection I have had to rely on collectors for finding this material and I do not recall seeing that tale. Regarding Space Smith. Some of them are definitely by Hanks, some by another artist using the Hank Christy alias (one of several of Hanks' nom de plumes) and some, I believe are a collaboration. Even the ones by Hanks are generally sub-standard and appear, as I have said elsewhere, as though they were done in the subway on the way to the Fox offices. Thanks, -Paul Karasik
  5. We reprinted the story you refer to in RAW Magazine #5 in 1982. That original Stardust tale is from Fantastic #7. It is one of the best of all the Stardust stories and will be featured in the new collection.
  6. I am not a serious collector. My collection is vast but decidedly 2nd or 3rd rate. That is, I have one or two examples of most every publisher and genre (except for a vast 60's-70's superhero collection from my youth) and they are generally only in "good" condition. I got hooked on Hanks when I was the Associate Editor of Art Spiegelman's RAW magazine in the early 80's and we reprinted one of those Stardust tales (Fantastic #7). I hope that you will find the story of Hanks worth the wait.
  7. Jon Berk notified me that you fellers were discussing the creator of Stardust. To begin with, for years collectors figured that the guy's real name was Henry Fletcher because it sounded more authentic than his real name: Fletcher Hanks. 'I Will Destroy All Civilized Planets: The Comics of Fletcher Hanks' will be published by Fantagraphics early Spring 2007. I am greatly indebted to serious collectors such as Jon Berk for allowing me access to these rare books. As many of you know, Fletcher Hanks worked for second-rate publishers on third rate characters during only the first three years of the comic book industry (1939-1941). He has been largely forgotten...but that is about to change. The book will also include a sixteen page comics afterword written and drawn by myself which solves the mystery of 'Whatever Happened to Fletcher Hanks,' the maniacal cartoonist who created a hailstorm of tales of brutal retribution... and then mysteriously vanished.
