Frisco Larson replied to Frisco Larson's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I LOVE that thread Ricky!!!! It was SO much fun to see him unveil them a little at a time. As I recall, it was a thread for just his collection. I hope to get a lot of boardies with these books to participate. I hope RHG posts some here as well. -
Detective Comics 1-26 thread ... share & discuss

Seeking out information about the question above has sent my digging through my various mags, catalogs and lists. I was happy to find my Lost Valley Collection catalog! For those who don't have a copy, the original catalog records pre-Bat Detective issues 1-10,12 & 14 being included in the collection. Some of these issues I have never seen pics of. -

Part of the reason I wanted to start a new thread focusing on these early books is that I want to find out more information about them. The question that has been on my mind for quite a while is: Does anyone here on the boards have any of the pre-Bat Larson Detective issues or even any pictures of them? Jon Berk's Larson list in CBM #71 records the Larson Collection as having issues 3,4,6-10 & 14, but I have never seen any of them or been able to find any information about any of them being certified. Can anyone shed some light on this? -

Lets See Those Funny Animal Books!

Awesome! Thanks for pointing that out! I have a raw copy too and don't believe I remember thumbing it up, so now I will make a point of doing that the next time I'm in that box. -
Ah, old times! Thinking about the "Trunk Collection" has brought back some fun memories!!! I recently sold the Cap 27 from that collection, as I kept a nicer copy for myself. As I recall, I initially ended up buying Caps 17, 19, 20, 22, 23, 25-30, USA 6, Young Allies 6 & 8, All Select 2, and a few Human Torch issues, maybe 10 & 11. There were some Marvel Mystery and All Winners issues as well, but as you can see, I had my hands full buying Caps and such. There was an All Select 1, which I still know where that resides. Here's the story as I remember it: I was in San Diego in 94 when I bumped into a comic store co-owner from back home, Dan Veesenmeyer (might be spelled wrong) of Hot Comics, who also did storyboards for the X-Men cartoons! He told me that they'd JUST picked up a Timely heavy collection that came into the store in a big trunk. He told me to see Brian his partner when I got back. I went down the next day they were open after I got back. Only 2 Timely books on the wall, a Young Allies 8 and a Cap, maybe 28 (bought them both on the spot), both of which were doubles, as Brian was waiting to unveil the collection at the big MCBA 2-day show. It was a feeding frenzy, as you can imagine …. I remember John Hauser thumbing through a foot high stack of Timely books, only selecting a few. Once he was clear of the stack, I was next. When he saw me buy over a dozen right there, he knew he should've bought more. Even on the heels of my first San Diego show, I still had a few week window to ready myself for this unveiling. I never saw the Suspense 3 until quite a few years later when a friend wound up with it. I know there were a lot of DCs in there too, but I didn't care about them at all with all of these glorious Timely copies in front of me, most of which I'd never seen in person. The nicest copy of any of the Timely books is my Cap 25 which came back a blue 6.5. The Cap 20 is also a pretty nice copy. A lot of the books had insect damage and most had cream to off white pages, a few with off white. By my count, I still have 8 of the Caps and the Young Allies 6. I sold the USA 6 to a close friend for guide with first rights of refusal should he sell it. Don't forget Billy boy!!! The Cap 26 below is the "Trunk Copy" and the spine of the covers were split, so I had a young Matt Nelson seal the spine split in 1996 or 97 (did a VERY nice job too & I still have his little certificate ) and as you can see, the colors are really sharp.
