  1. Agreed, on the other hand though, this is the third best known D27 in the hobby, isn't it? I agree with you that it should be the action 1 sale by a bit but IMO probably not that much. 3.8? As, at the end of the day d27 and a1 are similar value and the d27s are generally higher grade than the A1s. I.e. The best d27 is a higher grade than the best a1, etc. People like the number on the label though. So I would guess 3.8/4 range It's either 2nd alone, 2nd tied or 3rd depending on whether or not this is the FN68 copy resurfacing and if it's not if it's better than that copy. If it the FN68 copy, this book was the first $100,000 comic book twenty one years ago.
  2. And... again. This is one of one at the top of the census and 1.2 points higher than the second graded best copy. The only other copy in the neighborhood is MISSING. This is a different story than just Action #1 vs. Detective #27.
  3. I wouldn't say never for anything regarding key comic prices, but I'd tend to agree. While Batman surpasses Superman in overall current popularity, Action #1 is an unequalled talisman in the collecting world, and it's image far more iconic. It is the grandaddy of all Superhero comic books, the book that launched the entire genre. Detective #27 is the first appearance of Batman. This is not an FF #1 vs. AF #15 scenario. Even collectors who have no interest in Superman feel a special awe when seeing an Action #1 in person, as if it were a Gutenberg bible or a copy of the Declaration of Independence, if I may be allowed a bit of hyperbole. + 1. Action 1 will always be "THE" comic book of comic books! It would never happen. Except for that one time that an Action #1 8.0 sold for a million dollars and then DAYS LATER a Detective Comics #27 in 8.0 sells for... 1,075,000. No way a Detective 27 could sell for more.
  4. I have scans of both. The Heritage and the Mastro copy that's missing. Once we get scans of this one...
  5. Questions: Is this the "other" high grade copy. The FN68 that sold for $81k and then $101k 20 years ago? If not, where did it come from? Who's selling this? When?
  6. my guess is it'll go for 2-2.5 mil I would actually think this would be a new record breaker. It's one of one in the Census ahead of an 8.0 and a missing book. It's either the 2nd or 3rd best copy known to exist and is a nine freakin' two which is pretty crazy for a golden age key.
  7. I think you should all take a look at the Census right effin now
  8. Honestly, with a few exceptions, the first 25 are exactly the kind of books you can get when you get them for a price you like. Especially if you're starting from scratch. They almost all show up regularly enough that there's one or two to bid on/pick up ever month or two. Patience is a good thing with those books.
  9. My most recent GL wins. Great looking books in person.
  10. Me too. It was an upgrade opportunity so I didn't go great guns on it but I was interested. I love that book, in general.
  11. I won these two last night. Once I get a 21 and a 31 I'll have an unbroken run from 8-53 which would be really phenomenal.
  12. I just realized, when I get all these books into the registry, I'll be knocking on the top ten registry sets for 1-157. And then it gets really hard to move up the ranks
  13. Yeah, I'm a big fan of #8. It's such a great design.
  14. Nice book in great condition Yeah, that's a super sharp copy. Looks great for an 8.0. I won the #8 tonight. I've knocked off some big numbers this week
  15. 3 great books in less than 24 hours DD 100 9.4 from Comic Connect (I stupidly hadn't browsed their non-auction listings in a while) DD 131 9.4 from Heritage last night DD 17 9.4 from Bob Storms
  16. From the source: Of course, he wasn't event born yet when the first one came out, but he's certainly in position to know.
  17. Yeah, it's a great copy. I can't wait to get it in hand.
  18. Since it came up earlier, I thought I'd share that I took a run at the DD7 Twin Cities tonight. I wasn't prepared to go all in, so I ended up bowing out around $3000. The good news is that I was able to switch tracks as soon as I lost out on the 7 to get the 16 for what I felt like was a good price
  19. Yes, I would say so. From the ones I've seen clear scans of or actually got to see or hold. That cover with its different shades/hues of blues and purple is brutal on any breaks in the cover. Spine tics are especially so magnified and pronounced against it. Like fricken beacons!! The Twin Cities does look like a very strong 9.2. I wonder what the grader's notes state why it was held down. One of the prettiest (best presenting) 9.4s I've seen is Rube's. I don't know if he still owns it or had to end up selling it. I've never seen it in person, but unless the scan was magical....it is a very, very nice looking 9.4. Personally I think one of the best out there. Roy had (brought to market) the only other 9.4 imho that was as pretty if not more so than Rube's. (One of his many) It was so purdy!! I had to pass on it at the time - don't know who owns it now, but it presented like a bute!! I'd love to get a look at all of them lined up, to compare and contrast. It's a frustrating position to be in for me as it's obviously a book I need and it will be the second most expensive book in my run and I'm faced with lowering standards in one way or another or I'm never going to actually finish the run Either I go for a 9.4 that doesn't present really well (I've been trying to get nice looking copies, for the grade, of everything I've bought) or I go for something like this Twin Cities book which would break the 9.4+ string, but would fit the mold in terms of looking great for the grade. Or I wait around for a nice looking 9.4 to surface Rob I truly feel your frustration on this!! Man it would be awesome if you personally could line them up and pick the one that would follow suit with your set standards. Again, all I can tell you from what I have seen - Rube's DD and that one of Roy's are the only two I feel qualify for you set. Other than that it is indeed waiting for a new one to surface that hopefully meets your qualifications or buy the Twin Cities one, which is a VERY STUNNING looking 9.2....your perfectionism & OCD might not blend well with it being just a 9.2 as you said though. But that book really should be looked at as "buy the book not the grade," because it indeed blows a lot of the 9.4s out of the water. Yeah, I've been thinking about the TC copy. It's a nice looking book, for sure. I should definitely get the grader's notes on that one. If I'm going to stray it would have to be on the toughest book in the run.
