About Me

  1. Today, April 15th, is Nostalgic Investments’ Comic Art NEW ART FRIDAYS! Featured Artists: Gene Colan Russ Heath Jim Aparo Featured Page: New Gods #7 Cover (Signed) by Luke Ross Growing up reading DC meant that you will grow to love the conflicts and battles that father and son, Orion and Darkseid, will have with each other. In this cover the ferocity of that conflict is evident. These are 2 of the greatest characters ever created for DC thanks to Jack Kirby. NEW ART FRIDAYS! update this week includes art from Salvador Larroca, Jack Kirby, Keith Pollard, Bob Brown, Luke Ross, Russ Heath, Herb Trimpe, Jim Aparo, Mark Bagley, Howard Bender, George Tuska, and Gene Colan! Uncanny X-Men #491 Cover by Salvador Larroca Fantastic Four #27 p7 (Large Art)(Signed) by Jack Kirby Thor #291 p14 (Splash)(Battle of the Gods) by Keith Pollard Avengers #114 p12 (The Kissing Page) by Bob Brown New Gods #7 Cover (Signed) by Luke Ross G.I. Combat #129 p7 (½ Splash)(Signed) by Russ Heath Incredible Hulk #139 p2 by Herb Trimpe Brave and the Bold #154 p8 by Jim Aparo Amazing Spider-Man #400 p35 (Mary Jane and Peter) (Death of Aunt May) by Mark Bagley Legion of Super-Heroes #283 p22 (Wildfire Origin) by Howard Bender Iron Man #59 p6 (Pepper & Happy) by George Tuska Marvel Spotlight #19 p15 (Son of Satan) by Gene Colan See all these New Art Fridays! pages at www.nostalgicinvestments.com/fridays and hundreds of comic art pages at www.nostalgicinvestments.com/comic-art Payment plans and trades are always available.
  2. Today, March 4th, is Nostalgic Investments’ Comic Art NEW ART FRIDAYS! Featured Artists: Bernie Wrightson Steve Ditko Alex Saviuk Featured Page: Brave and the Bold #154 p1 by Jim Aparo Most of the time when I think of a classic Batman image something like this splash comes to mind. Aparo really captures the essence of Batman. With the advent of the newest Batman movie, which is garnering great reviews, I thought it was appropriate to introduce this moody Batman piece. Better than most covers. NEW ART FRIDAYS! update this week includes art from Frank Thorne, Jack Kirby, Bernie Wrightson, Jim Aparo, Rich Buckler, Steve Ditko, Marshall Rogers, Flint Henry, and Alex Saviuk! Savage Sword of Conan #29 p48 (Splash)(Large Art) by Frank Thorne Boys’ Ranch #4 p11 (Large Art) by Jack Kirby Jade Hand p1 by Bernie Wrightson Love Romances #101 p5 (Large Art) by Jack Kirby Brave and the Bold #154 p1 by Jim Aparo Fantastic Four #331 p18 (Signed) by Rich Buckler Forbidden Worlds #137 p2 (Large Art) by Steve Ditko G.I. Joe #77 p9 by Marshall Rogers Grimjack #65 Cover by Flint Henry Saviuk Spider-Man Commission (Signed) by Alex Saviuk See all these New Art Fridays! pages at www.nostalgicinvestments.com/fridays and hundreds of comic art pages at www.nostalgicinvestments.com/comic-art Payment plans and trades are always available.
  3. Today, February 18th, is Nostalgic Investments’ Comic Art NEW ART FRIDAYS! Featured Artists: Liam Sharp Gil Kane Jack Kirby Featured Page: Marvel Two-In-One #1 p15 (First Issue) by Gil Kane With the success of Marvel Team-Up, Marvel wanted to take their second most popular character, the Thing, and team him up with other heroes from the Marvel Universe. In the first issue he meets up with Man-Thing who you see on this page. Pages from number one issues are crazy hot at this time. This title ran for a decade and 100 issues. I was a bigger fan of this title growing up then the team up title, that’s because I loved the Thing so much. Layton Iron Man Iron Man #137 Cover by Bob Layton It’s been many years since I was able to offer a Bob Layton Iron Man cover though I’ve been asked many times. This period of Layton covers are very sought after but not many have come onto the market. With the way the market has shot up in the last few months, I’m not sure if this is a good price or a great price. Featured Artists: Bill Everett Adam Hughes Mike Mignola Featured Page: Master of Kung-Fu #89 Cover by Mike Zeck This is really one of the best Zeck covers that I’ve ever seen. Gene Day did an outstanding job on Zeck’s pencils. The layout on this cover reminds me of Wally Wood's EC sci-fi covers. Shang-Chi looks amazing having defeated Fu Manchu with the spaceship and outer space as a backdrop. 6. Today, February 4th, is Nostalgic Investments’ Comic Art NEW ART FRIDAYS! Featured Artists: Jim Lee Sal Buscema Steve Ditko Featured Page: Action Comics #684 p5 (Doomsday Saga) by Jackson Guice I made a deal to trade for this page years ago and now I’m glad that I did. I’ve noticed anything associated with this story line goes for exceptional money. Of course that’s because in the last 30 years it’s the most significant storyline for Superman, and one of the most important for all of DC. When you combine Doomsday and the death of Superman that’s a powerful combination. You may be asking how did this car wind up in the sky? Well it was Doomsday hurling it there from the previous page. This page starts the sequence where the inevitable happens and Superman will face off against his most powerful and fearsome antagonist. 8. Nostalgic Investments’ Comic Art SPOTLIGHT MONDAYS! SPOTLIGHT MONDAYS! - On Monday we will spotlight a special piece of art for your collecting pleasure. Dark Phoenix Saga Classic X-Men #38 Cover by Steve Lightle The Dark Phoenix Saga only ran for 9 issues so there are a very limited number of covers available, and not many feature Phoenix. This one has Mastermind seducing Phoenix as Cyclops burns with jealousy. This is an inexpensive way to own an X-men cover of this caliber. If this was from the run, the price would be exorbitant. 9. Today, December 3rd, is Nostalgic Investments’ Comic Art NEW ART FRIDAYS! Featured Artists: Jack Kirby Milo Manara Jim Starlin Featured Page: Thor #139 p8 by Jack Kirby This page really has a lot going on if you read it carefully. Ulik the Troll, and Thor’s main nemesis, is wielding both his Mallet and Mighty Mjolnir, which he captured from Thor in the last issue. Thor, of course, came back and reclaimed it in the last panel. Considering we just had a Thor splash sell for $100,000 this seems very reasonable. I’ve been seeing some Thor small sized pages sell for $15,000 to $20,000. 15. Today, June 21st, is Nostalgic Investments Comic Art’s SPOTLIGHT MONDAYS! SPOTLIGHT MONDAYS! - Every Monday we will spotlight a special piece of art for your collecting pleasure. Ditko Magic Eerie Yearbook 1970 p30 Splash by Steve Ditko Wash pages are usually special in that they add depth and texture to an art page. Having it drawn by Ditko makes it more special. These splashes don’t come around often. If it was two years earlier and Spider-Man, this splash would be selling in the $250,000-$500,000 price range. So this page is clearly a great value. The equivalent Wrightson splash would be two to three times more for even more perspective. 16. Hello, My name is Philippe and I own and operate Philippe Labaune Gallery in NYC. We showcase original comic art by 20th and 21st century artists. Our inaugural exhibition was a homage to Katsuhiro Otomo and showcased almost 30 international artists creating works paying tribute to Otomo's "Akira". Opening July 1st, the gallery will be exhibiting drawings by Dave McKean from his 2012 graphic novel Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash. In addition to rotating exhibitions I also have available works by: Moebius, Philippe Druillet, Glenn Fabry, Geof Darrow, Tim Lane, among others. I am attaching a wonderful triptych that I currently have available by the master himself Moebius, and a spectacular Glenn Fabry from Batman Judge Dredd: Die Laughing Issue #1. Please feel free to visit my website philippelabaune.com or our instagram @philippe.labaune.gallery It is wonderful to find this forum and meet fellow comic art fans! Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. -Philippe

  18. Today, June 14th, is Nostalgic Investments Comic Art’s SPOTLIGHT MONDAYS! SPOTLIGHT MONDAYS! - Every Monday we will spotlight a special piece of art for your collecting pleasure. Gil Kane at his Best Marvel Team-Up #26 Cover Pencils: Gil Kane I’m sure I’ve said this before, but most collectors are big fans of Marvel covers that have more than one hero. Because of Chris Hemsworth, Thor has become one of the most popular heroes in the world. The cinematic and collecting world loves him. The Human Torch is just at the start of his worldwide popularity now that Marvel is about to launch the Fantastic Four movies in their next movie phase. Considering that Sal Buscema covers are now $50,000- $100,000, this Gil Kane action cover seems very reasonable. Hulk and Alpha Flight Byrne Cover Alpha Flight #28 Cover by John Byrne What makes this cover truly special is that it’s both a Byrne Alpha Flight cover and a Byrne Hulk cover. You also get the added bonus of having a rare appearance of the Beyonder. Those who read comics in the 80’s will remember this character. This is an example of how to put the price of this cover in perspective: the $38,000 is what you would pay for a pretty good, but not great, Byrne X-men page. Featured Artists: Jim Aparo Nick Cardy John Romita, Jr. Featured Page: Marvel’s Greatest Comics #31 Cover (Stat) by Jack Kirby Here’s the cover that was used for Marvel’s Greatest Comics 31. It’s a stat cover because the image was taken from FF 39. If the original art to the FF 39 cover ever came to market, it would sell for north of $700,000. Unfortunately, it probably doesn’t exist, so this is the closest that any collector will get to enjoying this historic cover - though you will undoubtedly enjoy the heck out of it once you hang it up. This Week: Captain America spread by Kirby Captain America #199 p2-3 (Spread)(Signed) by Jack Kirby There aren’t many things better in our collectible than a Jack Kirby double page spread. This Cap and Falcon spread is wall to wall action. Cap may very well be the single greatest character that Kirby ever created. Captain America and Kirby traversed from the Golden Age of comics (1941) to the Silver Age (1960’s) to 1976 when Kirby came back to Marvel and drew Captain America issue 193. These Kirby double page spreads are nearly impossible to find, especially one featuring Cap, and the now exceedingly popular Falcon.
