How do you feel about unpublished art? I don't mean sketches, but actual fully drawn and sometimes fully inked interiors or even covers that end up not making it into a comic. Personally, I think they're pretty cool and would love to know the stories behind those I've come across. I'm a new collector and don't currently have any unpublished pages, but I've seen some online. Do you have any? Do you know the story behind yours, whether it was redone, simply cut, completed for a book that never ended up getting published, given to a different artist, etc.? And do you enjoy collecting that kind of thing or only the stuff that went into a published work?

The pieces: 10 assorted pages from issues 8 and 9 of the 1980’s DC Blue Beetle series. Pencils by Paris Cullins, inks by Dell Barras. Most of the pages have some sketches (some pencil, some ink) on the back, so I am showing both sides of each page. 5 Simple Rules (Please, please read) 1st wins; tie/indeterminate goes to the thread. Payment is Check or Money Order (yeah, yeah I know I'm a dinosaur, troglodyte, luddite, mennonite, hermaphrodite etc. - I just don't have or want e-payments.) Shipping: Within U.S., $25 box shipping unlimited; one page or the entire thread. (The boxes I use run me $7; the rest covers shipping. If it’s less, I’ll put the difference in the package. Art will be in cardboard sandwich with lots of bubble packing inside the box, which is wrapped in plain brown paper for that slightly seamy “racy lingerie/adult toy” feel. Will label as such at no extra charge, for the titillation of your postal carrier if you like ) Don't be listy including the little one in my head. Returns: Sure, just notify me within three days of receipt and get it back to me in the same shape on your dime. (Kudos thread linked under my avatar.)

I am new to collecting original comic art and wanted to ask your opinion about the way ComicLink describes its original art pieces because I find their item descriptions to be very poor to say the least. They almost never mention the exact state of the item (creases, toning,... details that aren't always obvious on the picture) and they usually make no mention of the technique that was used. The prospective buyer doesn't know if the work was inked over graphite or over blue line (original blue pencil or scanned page), the type of paper that was used, and so on. If you are used to buying from CL, do you regularly contact them to ask more information about the art? Do the people at CL answer promptly? Thanks a lot!

I'm looking to buy my first real piece of original art and hoped to make it something nostalgic. Grew up reading Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vol 3, the crazy series by Image comics, so have my sights on a piece from that or from the recent reprints of it (TMNT Urban Legends). Art can be either covers or interiors, and I'm open to either finished inks/pencils or just blue roughs Eastman often does when planning out pages. Prices can range for all of these so I'm aware they could be as cheap as $300 (what the roughest often sell for on Eastmans store) all the way up to $2,500 (but ideally I really would like to keep it below $2k if I can, but show me whatever you got anyways). Help shell shock me with some cool art!

Today, February 19th is Nostalgic Investments Comic Art’s NEW ART FRIDAYS! Featured Artists: Sal Buscema Bernie Wrightson Jack Kirby Featured Page: Michael Turner Witchblade Illustration (Very Early) by Michael Turner This piece is very special. Witchblade #1 made its debut in November 1995 and was so popular that Pittsburg Comic Con invited Michael to attend their 1996 show. On a big piece of foam core the show promoter had a number of artists draw the characters they were best known for. Years later, this piece was cut out from the rest of the board in order for it to stand alone as a magnificent, and very early, image of Witchblade. NEW ART FRIDAYS! Update This week includes art from Bernie Wrightson, Sal Buscema, Michael Turner, George Papp, Jack Kirby, Rich Buckler, Jerry Bingham, James Fry and Rick Hoberg! I have been fascinated by a new book about original art. Comic Art in Museums (2020) is a historical approach to what has happened and a commentary about why comic art needs to be in museums. It is basically a collection of articles and essays from 1930 to 2018 about comic art in museums, comic art museums, artists in museums, and how the art world has struggled with High/Low distinctions. If you attended the Masters of American Comics show in 2005 you will appreciate how this discussion of "is it art?" has gone on for a long time. I appreciated learning the history of the comic art museums as well as struggling through the arguments of the place of comic art. I have been surprised that this has not been actively discussed on CAF or this forum because we seem to discuss this topic all the time. I get tired of talking about value. Instead let's have more of how incredibly beautiful and moving comic art can be. So here are quotes to start the discussion: Cassel (2003) "Comics are stereotypically an explicit narrative medium while the narratives of fine art are notoriously implicit." Laaniste (2002) "For the comic to work, it must be understandable...However...intelligibility in art is usually interpreted as trivial kitsch." Here are some links to ordering the book https://www.upress.state.ms.us/Books/C/Comic-Art-in-Museums https://www.amazon.com/Comic-Art-Museums-Kim-Munson/dp/1496828070
