About Me

  1. Hey everyone - I'm in the market for Steve Rude interior pages from any of his Superman titles, Captain America: What Price Glory or Thor: Godstorm featuring the title hero in costume. I'm aware of what's available publicly through all the typical sources. If you have anything that fits that bill that you're interested parting with, please feel free to respond to this thread or send me a PM. Thanks so much -Matt
  2. I am looking to fill some gaps in my registry set: https://comics.www.collectors-society.com/registry/comics/PeopleSetDetail.aspx?PeopleSetID=44174 Mostly interested in graded 9.8s and NM-NM Raws, but flexible and willing to pay extra for signature series In particular I am looking for the following issues the most Action Comics 684 Second Printing Adventures of Superman 498 2nd, 4th Printings Justice League America #69 3rd, 4th Printings Justice League America #70 3rd and 4th Printings Superman 82 2nd Printing (trying to upgrade my 8.5 copy) Legacy of Superman 2nd Printing Superman: The Man of Steel 20 Second Printing Superman 77 2nd and Third Printing UPDATED 12/9 removed books I have purchased UPDATED 6/10 removed more books I have acquired
  3. I decided it was time to get back on the saddle. I reactivated my CGC membership because I had some slabs that really needed new holders. I had been putting this off due to a very unfortunate experience I had two years ago with a ReHolder submission. I submitted several books in the spring of 2019 from my Action Comics set, these were expensive pieces from the ‘70s, a few of them were pedigreed, one such book was also in a fragile first generation holder, all in 9.8 grade. I packed them well, sent them off then got a disturbing email several weeks later informing me that most of my books would not receive the same grade. There were pictures of damaged books outside their former holders, I had to have them pressed, I had to wait several months, it was not fun. Thankfully all books came came back in 9.8 but… Two of them came back in the horrible black and white pedigree label, that CGC has since improved on, and big scratches on the holders. The other books came back with SCS. I’ll stop there, but it really left a bad taste in my mouth. Why am I trying this again? I guess I was feeling cute when I woke up this morning, IDK. So here it is, me giving this a second chance, getting back in the saddle. I probably won’t know how this goes for several months. I have only sent books in for new holders that really needed it and these two are no exception. See spoiler tag for Newton Rings and inner well scuffing!

  5. My journey into this wonderful hobby began in early 1994, when I found The Death of Superman graphic novel at Kroger, I was 11 years old then. The graphic novel collected the seven issue storyline "Doomsday!", the comic book colors inside hooked me. I had heard of this “event” but I was so late to the party that it was over. The Death and Return of Superman story arc was a trilogy of storylines; "Doomsday!", "Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Supermen!", all ancient history by '94. After I got The Death of Superman graphic novel I searched out issues for "Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Superman!," not an easy task for a kid with no job (or allowance 'cause I never did chores), who's only transportation were his parents or the school bus. I was able to catch up thanks to few Toys-R-Us trips, where late comers like myself were able to pick up various two packs and packaged sets of comics, with a lot of Superman books. I found most of the issues I needed for "Funeral for a Friend" this way. As I got more into collecting I decided I wanted to have the individual "Doomsday!" issues, even thou I had them nicely collected in TPB form, after another Toy R Us trip, I got all those issues from a box set. As I started accumulating price guides, poly bags and backing boards a monster began to gestate, who became concerned about condition and value. I then discovered there were actually multiple printings for many of these issues, and the first printings were more valuable! Each printing after the first edition was notated by a roman numeral, next to the issue number and price on the top left corner of each cover. The cover art remained the same with each subsequent printing but the title logo color scheme changed for each issue’s printing. After realizing this the 2nd, 3rd and so on printings I had were tarnished in my eye. All of my "Doomsday!" issues were later printings, and not worth the paper they were printed on, and most of my 'Funeral' issues were the same. As the years went on, and the prices went down, I replaced many of my later printings with first prints, recycling the paper rags I had before. Then CGC came along.... Around 2007 I decided to start CGC Registry set for this storyline, all 9.8, first prints only, yet by the early 2010's I re-discovered the later printings, becoming enticed by the thrill and challenge of trying to find these books in high grade. I love how unexpected all of this was, I know I never thought the later printings would ever be collectible, and I think it's safe to say I wasn't the only one. Here are my CGC examples thus far, keeping the thrill of the hunt alive. Updated 11/01/2019 Some of my childhood books also survived, thankfully.
  6. After 5 months, it's nice to have them back into my collection.
  7. Action Comics #683 (November, 1992) is a book I'm quite fond of, not only for the cover art, but also for the era that the book was published in, collectively referred to in the hobby as the Post-Crisis era. I also call this time frame Post-Crisis, Pre-Doomsday (1986-1992, or Pre-Death and Return of Superman), which is my favorite era of Superman reading material, focusing on great stories and character development for all the main and supporting characters involved. I did not start reading comics until early 1994; post Death and Return of Superman. One of the joys of finding the Death of Superman collected edition then was the discovery of the Superman continuity in the comic books and that Superman had been completely revamped in the late ‘80s, with a fresh new take on the character and the universe he inhabited. Not only did I become hooked on the Death and Return of Superman storyline, I became hooked on the books prior to, it was like streaming a series online to catch up and follow a developing story. I would not get to find all of these Pre-Death and Return of Superman comics until after childhood. I would find issues here and there at a few comic shops, enough to fill in some story gaps or give me a general idea, but most places I went to rarely had any Superman back issues prior to the Death and Return of Superman saga. These books then became placed on a pedestal for me, thought of as ancient, priceless relics, which would take a lifetime to find. This brings me to Action Comics #683, a book I first found, probably in 1995. I remember well pulling that issue out of the long box. The nighttime setting and full moon added an eerie atmosphere, seldom seen on Superman covers. Cover artist Jackson Guice does a good likeness of Superman, one I cannot get enough of. Childhood copy I was excited to see this cover for the first time; I was even more excited to find it was cover dated November, 1992. Why the cover date? The four Superman titles with this date include something special, a teaser for the next storyline, Doomsday! The teaser was in the form of the last page for each issue that month, a fist pounding through a vault, warning that, “Doomsday is coming!” I only found two of the four Doomsday teaser issues back then, I did find the other two as an adult and I still search for them to this day. Doomsday teaser pages Those four wonderful covers dated November, 1992! In 2008 I found a graded copy of Action Comics #683 on eBay, for a BIN price of only $29.99 with free shipping! I bought it right away; it was also the first copy of this issue to be certified 9.8 by CGC. I was excited to finally have the first printing of this issue; my childhood copy was a second printing, something I thought of as a bad thing at the time. My graded 9.8 copy was the lone 9.8 in the census for a few years, then the book, along with the other Doomsday teaser issues starting taking off price wise. In 2016 I found a raw copy of Action Comics #683 for only $3.00, I couldn’t believe my luck, I also couldn’t believe how good it looked when I put it in a fresh bag and board. Around that same time I started looking for nice copies of the second printing, a frustrating search to say the least. Time went on and I made a few new friends on the Collectors Society. One such friend shared my passion for the Death and Return of Superman books. One day in 2020, my friend submitted three copies of the second printing, and all three came back in 9.8 grade. His search was an exhausting one but his persistence paid off. I was floored when he told me he’d gift me one of these treasures. Holding both printings in 9.8 side-by-side was a dream come true. Denver ComicCon, 2016 An awesome gift This year I received a grading credit from CGC along with an award for Best Set Presentation for my Action Comics (Complete) registry set. I decided to pull a few books to send it, one of them being the copy of Action Comics #683 from the Denver ComicCon. The book came back 9.8 in a beautiful holder. I could sell one of my 9.8s for probably $100 or more, but I’m keeping both of them. To date, I have only seen a few copies of this book in the wild (I’m not saying this book is really that rare, it just rarely crosses my path), I had the luck of Forest Gump with this particular book, and I’m extremely grateful. What a cover! One more thing! My first graded example was certified on 10/01/2008. My second graded example was certified on 10/01/2021!

  10. Looking at my titles that I have read over the years.... the only mild interest I have reading in today's comic market are a few short DC series, Wondergirl and that's it. ;( I guess DC made it pretty easy for me to wind down my comic reading. looking at my titles that I have read over the years.... the only mild interest I have reading in today's comic market are a few short DC series, Wondergirl and that's it. ;( I guess DC made it pretty easy for me to wind down my comic reading.
  11. Since the turn around at CGC has been very long, I have not sent any books to them because of it but next week is gonna be October. So if I send them down in October maybe they will get a chance to look at them in December, har har har har. I forgot that my Superman #4 was newstand edition, so I'm curious what Grade I will get outta that one. As for Birds of Prey, I already sent the first 2 issues of the mini-series and got a 9.6 and a 9.8 so I'm curious what grades will be for the last 2. I want to slab the specials and one-shots of Birds of Prey before I begin slabbing the first volume of Birds of Prey. As for Wonder Woman, just dig the artwork and want to preserve the books. I might send a 3rd set of books depends if I have space in my shipping box.
  12. Hey guys - I'm looking for original art examples from Steve Rude from his: Any of his Superman work (particularly Superman Vs. Hulk, but also World's Finest miniseries, Adventures Of Superman #17, Legends of the DC Universe #14) Thor miniseries Captain America miniseries Preferably with the titular character in costume I believe I’ve seen all of what’s publicly available through all the usual sites. If you’re interested, please feel free to respond to the thread or DM me. As always, MANY thanks!
  13. Greetings, I’m looking for raw, 9.8 candidates for Adventures of Superman #505, specifically the ‘Direct’ Edition, not the Newsstand/Barcode Edition. There is only 1 9.8 in the census that belongs to a friend, so I know it’s not going to be for sale anytime soon. I’m particular on cover alignment also, I would also be interested in a bulk lots also for those with large inventory. I would like to see photos to before working out an offer. I hope I don’t sound stuck up or unreasonable here.
  14. Good morning! I have a nice batch of Adventure Comics with the Legion and some other books I am going to be listing. Postage on all books is $10 in a USPS priority mail envelope or $15 in a USPS priority mail medium box in the US. Outside of the US is exact cost. I will take returns on all books as long as I am notified within seven days of receiving. I prefer payment other than PayPal goods and services to avoid fees, such as Venmo, Zelle, PP F&F, check MO, etc. If you only want to use PP goods and services That’s ok. I have been on the boards since 2003 and sold and bought many times. I also have 100% feedback on my eBay account silver! Thanks for looking!
  15. I'm broadening my market to sell here at CGC's Chat Boards, MySlabs and HipComic, beyond just eBay where I started. Many, maybe even most, of my slabs for sale are at break-even prices. All prices are in U.S. dollars. Links: Slabs: https://www.ebay.com/str/Caravan-Comics-and-More?_bkw=cgc and https://www.hipcomic.com/store/caravan-comics-and-more?show=store&keywords=CGC and https://myslabs.to/woznia17 All items: https://www.ebay.com/str/Caravan-Comics-and-More and https://www.hipcomic.com/store/caravan-comics-and-more I am gradually adding my items to MySlabs, too. As I do so and as time allows, I will endeavor to do the math to try to lower prices accordingly to save you money. The link is https://myslabs.com/slab/my/my-slabs/for-sale/#. To claim on CGC for a CGC price: 1st private message via CGC (PM) by time stamp wins. I will PM or PayPal invoice you the total (Item + Shipping + Insurance + Signature Confirmation). To pay: PayPal only, to be arranged by PM. Payment must be received before items ship. Turnaround: Two business days, unless I'm traveling away from my stock. Then, two business days upon my return. Once an item is shipped, I will share the tracking number by PM. I want your items to arrive nicely and if for some reason they don't, I want you to get your money back without my having lost it, too, because of some Act of God for which I couldn't mitigate the unforeseen risk. Problems: Should any problems arise, I will troubleshoot those with you. Please keep it to PMs as I will do all in my power and according to these rules as I can to resolve issues. USPS Shipping, Insurance and Signature Confirmation* is additional: Total shipping cost will depend on the number purchased and value of the items. 1-2 CGCs = $15 shipping + insurance + $3.20 3-4 CGCs = $25 shipping + insurance + $3.20 5-6 CGCs = $35 shipping + insurance + $3.20 And so on. Feedback: I appreciate, if at all possible, that once a transaction and delivery is successful, you let me know by PM and/or give me a thumbs up or other good nod somewhere in this thread. I'll start a second post here to summarize sales and successes. It helps me with credibility on the Chat Boards and helps you reflect that you're a paying customer. *Stolen packages: I use Signature Confirmation as a deterrent against stolen packages. It is not my responsibility, once USPS Tracking shows "Delivered," if your package was stolen - the mail carrier should be having someone at your address sign for it. The only thing I can do from where I sit is provide Signature Confirmation and hope you'll be the one to sign for it. It is incumbent upon you to watch for when your package will arrive, and I strongly encourage you to sign up for Delivery Tracking alerts by SMS and/or email via USPS.com. I've had packages delivered to me stolen, too, and I've had packages I've sold stolen, too. This is my remedy. **Final insurance rates are those at https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm#_c191 at time of payment (not sale). USPS insurance rates are subject to change. No returns nor refunds. Ask for photos if you're not sure about/want to see more detail on an item.
  16. It's a bird. It's a plane! It's Superman: From the 30s to the 70s. The book that started an obsession, and ended up becoming my mission. I'm sure my father bought it for me, but I have no idea why I obsessed over the thing. The art was mostly crude. The stories were universally terrible. (If he had given me the Batman: From the 30s to the 70s book I probably would have gotten into Batman.) But something about the history of the thing, those early covers with their bold colors and dynamic layouts pulled me in. I never read the stories, but would go back to that dusty hardcover again and again and flip through it, stopping at each double page spread of covers, from the early issues up through the 1970s Neal Adams ones. My kid brother at some point got a hold of the thing and destroyed the cover, then went to work on the pages with a magic marker. I kept it anyway. When @Point Five pushed me to buy an old, crappy copy of Action Comics 59 at a New York comic con 15 years ago, I should have known better. The cover was detached. It had color touch. I later found out that the cover was married. It didn't matter. In what was to become a decade-plus journey to complete a run of golden age Action Comics, all CGC'd. At first there was no plan. It just kind of happened one day, a few years into collecting them, when I realized I had a dozen. Then 2 dozen. Then 3.... My journey ended about a month ago, when I finally received the last book I needed to complete Action Comics 15-63, Action 23, courtesy of @Cosmic Boy. Getting that book back from CGC was a saga unto itself. But it will have to wait. I spent nearly 5,500 days building this collection. I'm gonna take 49 days to post them here. One book a day; each book a story.

  18. Hello Everyone, To start off I'm not sure what forum to post this in. I currently have a Superman and Bizarro #71 (newsstand) that at first glance it looks like someone colored on it with a black marker. But I got to looking at it and I'm not sure it that's still the same case or not. When I zoomed in on it with my phone camera I noticed that there wasn't any marker/color pencil stroke lines. And at a angle I wasn't able to see any indents on the page. What could have done it? Is it the printer error or did someone actually color it black? Either way what would the ballpark grade be?

  21. Hi, Not knowing how to preserve this card or the value it may hold I thought I would just ask for any and all helpful thoughts. It is very tall and as such I don't think they make anything but a top loader to fit it, and I know error cards have value but any ideas where I could find out how to gauge it? Thanks
