Quite a haul this week on the Bone front. Early run comics, BONE-BARS (not pictured), and like half of the holiday cards from Cartoon Books. Can anyone tell me more about these concept art pieces? I know they were supposed to be for the Nickelodeon project, but like when were these released?

I think I've made several comments about those conceptual art pages over the years from the Nickelodeon film. I’ve never owned them myself but I think they were part of a package released by Cartoon Books. Will try to remember…

First time commenter, but huge fan of Bone. I've got my entire original run from issue 6 on. Also have everything before that in 2nd or later prints. I was lucky enough to get an original sketch of Jeff's during the Tuki Kickstarter (my prized possession). Also have a few signed copies, lots of prints with signatures (including a bunch of RASL prints) and even an arm full of Bone tattoos! Starting my journey on getting the whole series in CGC slabs.

Also, there was a question on the concept art pieces from the scrapped Nickelodeon project (which I have framed on my wall). They were included in the Vernal Equinox (Books 1-3) Slipcase edition.

Now my turn for a question. I just found out that when the original run was taken over by Image comics (21-27), Cartoon Books put out their own version of those books as well (some of which have different covers). The only thing I haven't been able to find is Issue 27 with the Cartoon Books imprint (instead of the Image one). Does anyone know if this exists? Thanks!

Welcome to the boards! Very glad to have you here. You’ll definitely need to show us your sketch from the Tuki Kickstarter :)

Thank you for letting us know when the Nickelodeon concept art was produced. My knowledge is definitely limited when it comes to some of the TPBs and hardcovers from that era.

Cartoon Books never released another printing of #27. They sold very few copies of their #21-26 second printings and, my guess, is that it wasn’t in their financial interest to keep going. I’ve always wondered if Jeff still drew an alternate #27 cover hm

Sorry for the glares! Here's the OA from the Tuki Kickstarter. Also my framed Concept Art images and a 10x15 print of the Issue #20 cover art with the matting signed by Jeff. I asked the folks at Cartoon Books about the print and they said it's not the original but it's a print they did for San Diego Comic Con a long time ago and the signature is definitely Jeff's.

It's all very cool...thanks for working it out with the collector so we're able to see these gems. :)

I definitely don't have everything I wish I did..lol..I've got over 1000 raw issues now, around 90 #1s of various printings, and at least one of every printing of every issue. I'd like to complete a set of 9.8s..that's a long-term goal.

Favourite items in my collection: the #1 and OA from the Tuki Kickstarter, the Before Bone Artist Proof, Red Dragon and Smiley cold cast figures, and a couple of pristine copies of the Image #2 newsstand editions.

Don't have, wish I did: Tales From The Lantern is the glaring hole in my collection...someday!  @DocGo, that ugly clay mug you posted a while back is something I've never seen in the wild..would love to get my hands on one of those too.

If I could create a Bone item:
-I would love to see more figures..maybe a series of them.
-a 40th Anniversary #1 reprint in a few years
-a large format Artists' Edition omnibus - similar to the one they did for the Great Cow Race
-and more art prints..lots of em :D

Was thinking about this today and we need a pic of those 90 #1s at some point. Please, @videoloop, make it happen!

Seriously, that is an incredible list of the collection @videoloop! That ugly mug you mentioned was on eBay last week! I would have picked it up if I had known you needed it! It only went for $100. The long-term goal of all 9.8s is crazy but best of luck with it! My long term goal is all CGC first prints, no matter the grade. Am I weird for that? What are the community's thoughts on lower grade books?

Lower grade books will be much easier and definitely lighter on the wallet, which I see no problem with :). I’m 10 books away from an all 9.8 set and it will be a struggle to finish. The books I need simply don’t go up for sale and the people who have them haven’t been willing to trade so far. Most of the issues in my set have been personal copies that have gone through the Signature Series process. It’s long and stressful but ultimately rewarding for me because of how much I love the series.

Let us know what you decide to do. The process is fun to read about.

A 9.8 of Bone #1 sold a few days ago on eBay for $11k (Best Offer). It sat there for at least a couple weeks (I think). The pics on eBay aren’t great and neither are the scans on CGC but it looks to be about a mid-tier example. It was the latest 9.8 to be added to the census. Hope the buyer and seller are pleased

A third 1994 Comic Images Bone Sketch Card came up for auction in 2024 last week and sold for $621 on eBay. I was a little surprised at the price since its condition was probably the worst of the three (IMHO) but, with the exception of this year, they almost never come up for sale in public. As I’ve mentioned before, the last one I saw before 2024 was in 2014. Perhaps these sales will bring more into the open. It is their 30th Anniversary after all :)

Do any of you have one?

Wow, sold out of the commissions in less than a minute. Unfortunately, the original Smiley Art wasn't in a $1000 or $1500 package like I had thought, instead it was in a $5500 package which is just too rich for my blood. Ended up getting the head sketch in the hardcover and one of the motion digital frames. Hope some of you end up with awesome stuff (and if anyone here got a commission, we can't wait to see what you end up with!!).

The Smiley art price was shocking to me when I first saw it. It is 8x10 which is bigger than the Thorn from the last Kickstarter but still. This is the first time I’ve questioned one of their prices. Perhaps he will add a bit more uniqueness to each of these.

Pretty sure it's going to be the same or similar lightboxed Smiley lol.  Definitely not a great deal compared to the 11x17 commission being only double this cost.

You may be right but I really hope not. This is more expensive than the fully inked sketches with multiple characters from Thorn.

It looks like the campaign is doing pretty well so far with over 700 backers in two days. Personally, I can’t wait to see the extra materials since only 288 of the 352 pages will be the story itself.

The Infinite Objects add-on is also interesting. It’s sort of a tease of what an animated version of the saga could look like. C’mon Netflix, let’s go lol

Shoot..I missed it!! I've been cooped up in my studio and haven't been following eBay as closely as I should be.

Thanks for posting the photos of your OA/framed prints. That #20 print popped up a while ago, but it was in terrible condition so I passed..still waiting for another one to come on the market. Glad to know where those other concept art pieces came from too...I need to add those!

As for lower grade slabs, I'm all for grabbing what you like within the bounds of what you can afford. I picked up a few lower grade slabs when I first started dipping my toe into graded books, and I've never regretted buying them. Of course I aspire to @DocGo's crazy collection...but we all have to start somewhere! Most importantly, enjoy the hunt!! It's a noble quest. Especially for this series, IMO.

I SO wanted one of those commissions...but I couldn't pull a $10K trigger right now. I figured it was going to be out of my price range, so I thought I would settle for one of the 8x10 Smileys (to go with my OA from the Tuki Kickstarter), but I thought they were priced too high as well - certainly out of my price range this time, anyway. I ended up grabbing two tiers - a sketched HC, and a signed HC..and a few add-ons. I didn't spring for the video flipbook though. What do you guys think of it - should I change my mind on that one?

There’s only one left of the Mystery Cows as I speak. The Cartoon Books crew is much smarter than me lol

‘I find the Infinite Objects piece too interesting to not purchase. The price isn’t great compared to similar products but I support Jeff in whatever he does. I probably need help…
