Baker Romance

Wow, Joanna if you would take the time to photograph every page of that story it would be terrific! If it's too much work I totally understand but that Harem story looks great!

There are no other illustrations by Baker in this magazine :( I'd love to know if others have some other magazine illustrations by Baker. The weird thing about this, is we can all see how great his illustrations were. This was from 1957 near the end of his life when his comic illustrations didn't really have the signature Baker style. I'm thinking maybe he just preferred the illustrations where he didn't have to worry about others inking his work. Maybe, he also got paid better for them.

His b&w wash illustrations are superb! Thanks for sharing!

My mistake. The Baker illustrations are from Rage 3, April 1957. I always confuse the two issues because I purchased them at the same time.

Thanks BB, I've been eyeing this issue. I'll keep a look out for it.

Since Feldstein and Baker worked together on Crown then it is interesting to see what Feldstein did in romance comics without Baker. Thanks to Mr. Door Tree for posting this stuff. Check his site for the complete stories.

I will try to post the rest of the story but you could probably find several stories worth reading at Mr. Door Tree's website.

By the way, Wood put so much detail in his drawings that you would think he couldn't get paid enough for the hours he put in. Baker and Frazetta produced figures with less detail which were just as effective. However, Frazetta'a originals show a lot more detail than the comics. The colorist added a lot to his work too.

Don't forget to check out the other artists that did romance comics. Schomburg did some nice air brush covers.

And Frazetta did this nice story for Personal Love 32. Someone added some pretty good shading and color to this page. Horror comics usually have a lot of color but romance stories are usually not quite so dramatic. Frazetta probably added the shading which added more depth (ala Roy Crane) but the color may be by someone else. Someone noticed that a lot of Frazetta'a fine line work is lost in the engraving process but I kind of like the effect of the colors.

I thought a comparison would be interesting since Mr. Door Tree has posted the originals. The color helped a lot. Like in the horror comics. Sets the mood...

He also did some good work for Crown but the art was a little less realistic than his romance comics and more like Skygirl.

Perhaps it was the inker again. I like what Feldstein did but I am not sure about the others.

From a Flickr friend (Terry McCombs) I got the following comment:

For a touch of irony, the company that published Crown Comics, Golfing / McCombs (no relation) was also the company in the 50’s that published Seduction of the Innocent, the book that almost put the comic book industry out of business.

Thanks for posting the samples, BB! It is interesting to see them right next to each.

I think Baker also did a feature for movie comics. The inking isn't the best but Fiction House seemed to have a lot of cooks in the kitchen.

This story from Movie 4 was a more obvious Baker story and Mitzi wore a green hat. It also had a "green dress" cover by Lubbers.

I think Baker preferred red. He dressed up Mysta in a green dress when she traveled in cognito.

Although it looks like the giant ants thought the girls in red dresses were mighty tasty. Ladies first.

I think you're right BB...the first thing I noticed when Baker began to catch my eye was that almost every great cover he had was made with some red in it. Great observation!
