I doubt if you will be luck enough to book a SD hotel via the convention website's deep discount due to crazy hi-demand during the 1st hour of online reservations. Estimate 1,000 aussi per night for a chain hotel within hiking distance of the waterfront convention center. SDCC is only part of the entertainment. Lots of tourist attractions within bus or taxi range.
