I wonder how this happened? It seems that pages are tanned/brittle near spine but they seem to be okay elsewhere.

Basically from poor storage. The cover is a better paper stock than the newsprint interior. Many "warehouse finds" suffer from a lesser variation of this. They show really gorgeous covers with tan-cream interior pages.

most of the harvey horror file copies are like that, its a shame.....

Any chance this would net a qualified label? I mean it IS one single (admittedly large) defect, in a way... and if you placed it carefully in a slab, it might look pretty durn good... As good as any book CAN look in a slab, I mean

Yes - I have a couple and they really are beautiful books. Luckily the page quality of the ones I got could have been a lot worse.
