Anyone know why S&K did not work on the covers for issue 3 and 4?

[font:Times New Roman]My guess would be the pressure Joe Simon was under editing CA and developing new projects for Goodman combined with the added workload on Kirby producing interior art. Around this time Jack churned out the cover and contents of Young Allies #1 (Summer 1941) and the cover and 1st splash page for this kewl title (an obvious effort to replicate Cap's popularity) ...

...somehow he still managed to get this well crafted cover out the same month (his first for Cap since #1, as Simon is credited with #2)...

Kirby's Cap covers became less fixated on detail as the series progressed, undoubtably influenced to some degree by tight deadlines and other demands placed on his work output, but Jack's looser, sketchier drawing style seemed to acquire even greater dramatic flair in chaotic action scenes...

As a side note, according to Joe Simon from My Life in Comics they were summarily dismissed by Martin Goodman after completing issue #10. Word had leaked back to Goodman that the team were moonlighting a proposed series to Timely's biggest competitor (DC) in violation of contract. Alas, they'd planned on jumping ship eventually over an unresolved compensation dispute, but this incident sped up the process, cutting short the S&K era of Cap. [/font]
